Main Script Hacking, Part 3
After much, much more work than it should have taken, I’ve finally fixed the issue with the various text speeds and the thing that would happen if the text was set to Fast and there was an odd number of letters on a line, followed by a newline character. In total (including some time last week), probably took 20+ hours of work. Arghhhhh I’m probably not going to heaven after the things I said while fixing this thing
Anyway, it’s hard to show this in action with pictures, so you’ll just have to believe me when I say the text speed stuff works now, and that these pics were with the speed set to Fast.

The text in those pics can be formatted better now, that will happen in Drafts 2 and beyond. Most of the text needs to be formatted to fit within the new standards/limitations, actually.
The deal with this hack was that with this game, Slow and Medium load one letter at a time, while Fast loads two letters at a time. But if on Fast, if you wind up only needing to print 1 letter because of a control code or newline or something, it throws everything out of balance. My final fix for this wasn’t the one I had hoped for, but it’s also a fairly clean hack, so I guess it’s okay. I really, really wish we had the source code for when it comes to stuff like this, though. Ah well, we’re more likely to get a MOTHER 9 before that ever happens ๐
I actually was going to give up and do a lame workaround for this speed issue, which was basically to make Fast load only 1 letter at a time too. I tried to accept it, but it just wasn’t doing it for me. Plus it wasn’t even that fast, and it looked strange. So I’m glad I kept at it. Gotta make sure the text presentation isn’t half-assed — it’s the life of this game.
The one piece of bad news is that the menus in the debug room don’t act so great now. The menus still work, you just can’t see what you’re choosing. But that stuff isn’t vital, and I think I know what the problem is anyway, so we’ll toss that into the “fix/polish this stuff later if necessary” pile.
Anyway, damn, that hack took way longer than it should have. Assuming nothing crazy happens, the next step is to hack things so the strings in RAM can be 210 letters. Right now we’re stuck in the 100-ish area, which is meh and still prohibitive. When I’m/we’re editing stuff, it’d be nice to not have to worry about such limits. It’s annoying and having to chop text up to fit within limitations isn’t something I want to do.
Normally, this would take at most only an hour with most other text in the game, but this routine is pretty complicated (it IS the heart of the game, after all) so it will probably take longer. Hopefully it won’t be as problematic as this lame text speed junk was.
After that, the only major hacking remaining is the Block 0 stuff, which is a part of the main script that’s full of weirdness.
Anyway, for now I’ll push this hack up to oh, 60% or so. We all know it’s pretty arbitrary, so it doesn’t matter much, but *some* progress was made.

Tired/sleepy/about to see movie, so I decided to play through a chapter real quick. Aside from the 210-letter thing I need to do, no real technical glitches showed up, awesome. Lots of text formatting issues, but even a bubble monkey could fix that stuff in time. I think mostly I’m still in shock at how much (*@#(*9 stuff had to be hacked to get things this far when I look back at the past few months. How did we manage to fix all that stuff and not die? So so so glad we don’t have to do that all over again.

Yeah, we saw Indy Jones just now, you guys are good detectives. It was pretty fun, though the last half went exactly as I would’ve expected, I hate movies that I can predict argh. Nothing will beat the third one though.

Hey Mato, i recently got a snes emu working on my wii with the twilight hack and i fired up bahamut lagoon with ur translation patch on. And all i have to say is thats its an amazing game and the translation is flawless. Its so professional that you forget its even a translated game. We’ve been expecting a cease and desist for a while. It happened actually on April Fool’s Day last year I think on Mother3.org. It will probably be just as real.

Well, truffles are a kind of mushroom, so that part isn’t too odd. That said, it DOES sound like a hidden homage to Earthbound, which is cool ๐
Nintendo has all my contact info, if they were gonna do something, they’d probably do it through a more normal means like mail or a phone call, probably the former. Or hired goons.
To answer someone’s question, I could always make a video now, but 1. text still needs formatting and 2. I don’t wanna do anything that’d show too much of the story and 3. first draft text is still pretty bleh. I dunno, we’ll see.
Getting 210 letters to work is going to be very time consuming, the game constantly uses the location of the string area to reference other parts of memory, so untying that everywhere will be icky.
I always though the trading game thing you had to do at the bottom of the well in Majora’s Mask (or wherever it was) seemed a lot like the monkey caves in EB. Anyway, that’s not really relevant to this stuff I guess.
Gosh, I played Majora’s Mask only a couple years ago and I don’t recall any game in a well. heheh

Ikana canyon is so cool. The music box house plays a slightly altered version of the Boo’s Merry-go-round music from SM64. I remember thinking the same thing about the well and the monkeys, except in reverse, since I played Majora’s Mask before I played Earthbound. Are there any other games that have that sort of trading-unimportant-items-to-get-through-rooms section? it seems like one of those things you’d find ripped off everywhere…

Vinnie: If they ask us to stop, we’ll comply. After that, I personally would have no intention of restarting the project, I try to keep to my word whenever possible, also I don’t think I’d enjoy being in court too much.
If that happens, just accidentally leave it in a place where someone could get their hands on it.
I know that sounds like something you wouldn’t want to do, but I’m sure we could find a way to make you not responsible for the unfinished patch getting leaked.

I think knowing that you’re on the home stretch must make continuing on not has grueling as it would be otherwise. These updates make my day!
Specifically, it’s female pigs, which are known as sows, that are used in searching for truffles. They must be muzzled, however, to prevent them from eating the prize. The reason that sows are effective in finding truffles is due to a chemical compound that is very similar to a male pig’s pheromones (specifically androstenol in the saliva) that the truffles produce.

Shingo, from watching Mato’s progress I think part of the problem is his best ideas happen right before he falls asleep. I’m starting to think Mato sees nothing but programming code when he sleeps.

Regarding the Question Vinnie asked about Nintendo. trying to pull the plug on this whole ptroject. If Nintendo went through with that, I’ll more than likely never support them (finacally or otherwise). They’ve done enough to us. Period.
