Fixing Block 0 Bugs, Part 1

15 years ago by Mato

The last few days, I managed to get some time in to do lots of code tracing and documenting as we try to finish these last few bugs. The hardest part of this project is actually finding time now, the hacking is almost a kind of “it’s just a matter of time” thing at this point.

Anyways, I did get a lot of stuff figured out, but still have some more work to do before I start writing fixes. I’ll put the Block 0 thing (info on Block 0 here) to 15% for now though, it seems about right. I might have some time around the weekend, hopefully I can use that to get a lot done.

For those wondering what these bugs are and why they need to be fixed, here’s a quick explanation. There are certain special (Block 0 is all the special text in the game) lines of text in the game, some used in cut scenes, some used when you use items outside of battle, etc. These special lines use special programming, which needs to be fixed to work right. Otherwise, they’ll crash the game, corrupt memory like crazy, and just cause madness. One example I’ve given in the past is this video from a while back.

If the game doesn’t crash right away when this happens, it’ll corrupt memory a LOT, even corrupting graphics on screen, player data, and stuff like that. Here’s Flint using a deadly Block 0 item.

  • Graphic glitch

  • No name, and no HP and PP???

  • WTF? Flint is actually a numb Lucas
with an IQ of 6 and bizarro equipment
    and stats?

  • Nut Bread is not for the head

So anyway, my lofty goal is to fix all of this Block 0 stuff sometime this month, and, if I’m lucky, finish the last programming issue on the to-do list this month too, if possible. But it mostly depends on how much free time can be found or if we can find a time machine. Unlike with translating/editing, you really do need big chunks of time when doing hacks like this.

I’ll continue to make mini-updates of my progress in the comments, so even if normal updates are rare, you can still check things out as they happen.

Mato-san, I have come from the future to give you the secret to building a time machine from normal everyday household items. However, even when following the instructions to a T, it’ll still take about as long to build as it’ll take you to finish hacking. Sorry πŸ™

  13. nekoaitsu said 15 years ago:

Mato, you should release a version of the patch without the block 0 hacks, just for fun. The effects of block 0 seem evil in an amazingly amusing sort of way.

But hide the link to the patch, and pretend it doesn’t exist. That way, we can have hope. Or be disappointed. Or both.

    @ the great morgil:

Couldn’t he build the time machine, then come back to right now and give himself the time machine?

Also, just to keep it on topic, he could also give himself the finished translation, but he probably would have done all that by now, or something…

Anyway, awesome work as always. I hope you can find more time to hack, but always find some sleeping time, first. Also, how many parts do you suppose the Block 0 bug fixing updates will have?

  29. Lei said 15 years ago:

Awesome work! Those screens and text are funny! lmao!

Oh, these questions are a bit random, but one of them pertains to the project.

    1. What would you say the EB Saga videos are rated? Wanted to watch ’em but I want to make sure they’re not… weird xP

    2. Who’s your favorite Mother/Earthbound series hero and heroine? I like Lucas and Ana

    3. What are you going to do after you finish the translation project, other than translating it into other languages? Go to Disney World??

    4. I know it’s good to support Mother 3 in America, but… I don’t want this work to go to waste!! How would you feel if you were like, a couple numbers away from 100% completion on the project THEN Nintendo announced it? I would rip out my hair.

  30. Habiib said 15 years ago:

    @ nekoaitsu

That is pure genius. It will give the hardcore fans a little extra difficulty. I’d play it to see how far I could get.

    FLINT DOESN’T HAVE ANY PP!!!

  34. Acacia Sgt said 15 years ago:

So that’s Block 0 in action. Good to know it is just a matter a time.

  35. Lei said 15 years ago:

BTW, I’m writing an Earthbound FAQ even though I don’t have the game yet (writing down what I DO know). I’ve seen other walkthrough authors do that too to prepare themselves. Is that strange?

  36. N-Dawg said 15 years ago:

Hey Mato i have an idea. you could ask dr. andonuts to make you into a robot and borrow the “just in case” Phase Distorter 4 and go into the future

  37. Trimalchio said 15 years ago:

Actually, Flint has 4 PP. His max PP is zero. That’s all.

    ?

  38. Anonymous said 15 years ago:

Nut Bread is totally for the head.

  39. Invalidd said 15 years ago:

Wow, Flint seems to have a low IQ. No wonder he equipped nut bread on his head, and is using a pencil eraser as body armor.

  40. Gastronomic Gamer said 15 years ago:

    Must… Play… Mother… 3….

When I get it, I’m going to put it on my DS, then I’ll play it during class and my teachers will be like, “Why are you playing in class?”, then I’ll be all like, “It’s Mother 3!”, then they’ll be all like, “Oh. Okay. Cool.”

This is the best plan ever.

  41. triangle said 15 years ago:

someone should draw a pic of lucas like that.. you know.., having the pencil eraser as body protection, the lumber, rope snake, nut bread on the head…. and if possible, show that he has a very low IQ… oh yeah, and if possible show that he’s numb

and think of some creative way to show that it’s actually flint (maybe flint looking in a mirror?)

  42. Mato said 15 years ago:

I think flint’s equipment in that screen would make for a rockin halloween costume, even if nobody understands it and thinks you’re crazy.

  43. Rich said 15 years ago:

Just wanted to say I’ve been following you guys and eagerly awaiting your finished product. Thanks for all your hard work! I legitimately hope someone big catches wind and offers you guys some good jobs.

  44. Aman13 said 15 years ago:

Ah, but Flint’s IQ is short for 6000; the top of the head is the place for nutbread. I’d love to be him if I was starving, building a house, needing a snake, or getting ready to take a scantron test.

Anyways, keep it up. I’m guessing there should only be two big updates left; Block 0 is done and the patch is ready for download.

  45. Derrick T. said 15 years ago:

  46. TheBird said 15 years ago:

i will be wearing nut bread when this patch is finished

  47. Frenchman said 15 years ago:

See now i must agree with the guy that said that nintendo will try to steal the translation in some way so that they can release an official translated earthbound 2 in america thereby saving alot of moola. Its only logical that nintendo would say that they have no intention of translating the game so that loyal fans like you and me would do it for them so that they could take it fix some little bugs left in it and market it and make millions of dollars selling it to unsuspecting americans like ourselves. All these things aside i really respect what you guys are doing and i wish you all the luck in the world.

  48. TheReaper08 said 15 years ago:

  50. Marty said 15 years ago:

Just an observation, but the effects of block 0 corruption remind me of Missingno from Pokemon Red and Blue. Now I’m sure it’s a similar TYPE of error (memory corruption), but it happens in a different way. Interesting.

  51. EmpoleMew said 15 years ago:

The stats screen seems to have pulled a Final Fantasy on you.
    Orange and red numbers? Seriously.

*Has been playing FF I&II Dawn of Souls to much.*

  52. noco said 15 years ago:

To everyone saying nintendo’s going to steal the translation, etc.:
Not only would they not do that, but if they did, where would they get the script?
Mato’s actually hacking/modifying the game rom, not editing the source code…
So if nintendo did steal it they’d have to hack/undo all of what mato’s done.

Jeez I should finish my homework πŸ™‚

  53. Vagn said 15 years ago:

  105. Sharkgod999 said 15 years ago:

Or not… silly spammers ruin everthing.

  107. Coconut of Enlightenment said 15 years ago:

Hmm…Flint/Lucas is equipped with the pencil eraser, eh? So I take it that there is a pencil eraser in this game? You mean you replaced the octopus statue from the game’s cache of sprites? Or did Mother 3 always have a pencil instead of an octopus, for some reason?

  108. Mato said 15 years ago:

I’d go into more detail, but I’d prefer that stuff be discussed on the forum instead. Except it sounds like you haven’t played the game before, so uhh I’ll just say yes we made little changes like that to mimic an official translation, some of which are even in the menu patch.

  109. Exp HP said 15 years ago:

Mato made that change a long time ago, I think. Not everybody knows the pencil statue in EB was an Octopus statue in Mother 2. For the statue to have the same nostalgic effect when it appears, it had to be localized to fit what EB had.

Hey mato, I had some experience in high school with programming in c++ and I remember my teachers tellin us to write psuedo code before actually programming. Now I am not saying you didn’t but you know I was thinking earlier and before my head caught fire and had to put it out this question came to mind. Does the block 0 only contain text or does it have both code on how certain stuff is to be run and text? Also, is it possible to rewrite the code so that you can get block 0 to operate correctly from scratch without the game trying to use the existing code contained in the rom?

Block 0 would probably drive most people insane. In fact, most people would have already gone insane over everything in this project. That shows how awesome everyone working on the project is.

  115. Davin said 15 years ago:

Mato, I think Nintendo will pay you for the translation you made and market it in the Americas. I dunno, the only sad part of that happening would be that all Earthbound/Mother roms except Earthbound zero will be ESA protected.

No they wont, your comment makes my brain hurt.

Why does nut bread head remind me of Anpan Man?

For anyone wondering, anpan is a sweetbread filled with sweet bean paste. It actually tastes better than you might imagine after hearing the phrase ‘sweet bean paste’. I know because there’s a wonderful Japanese bakery on the SE corner of University & Priest in Phoenix. Well, technically I guess it’s in Tempe, but close enough.

Glad to hear progress on what sounds like a nasty knot.

Rather surreal, that status screen. Body equipped only with a pencil eraser. I certainly hope it’s some big machine, like how I imagine the M2/EB Pencil Eraser, since the other kind we have in the real world wouldn’t exactly be concealing.

  120. Dervish said 15 years ago:

Mato, I truly and deeply love you and everybody else involved in this project. I’ve been looking forward to this ever since I played Mother 2 when it came out while I was a kid. Thank you for all of your hard work.

  122. Coconut of Enlightenment said 15 years ago:

That’s fine with me that you made some graphical changes to make the game feel more like an official localization…as long as you didn’t do stupid stuff like take all the red crosses off the hospitals like they did in EarthBound. But I suppose Nintendo did have good reason for that (they could have gotten sued by the Red Cross, which is also being sued by Johnson and Johnson). But since it’s technically a Templar symbol, and hundreds of years old, shouldn’t it be public domain?

  123. Edgar the Alien said 15 years ago:

Nut Bread. Apply it to the forhead.

“Nut bread is not for the head”

  125. chuixia0 said 15 years ago:

Hey, dont sweat this problem. This is a GOOD problem, youre getting into the trippy psychedelic Moonside glitches, and now everyone in their mind is thinking about how they would look wearing a breadbowl hat, fantastic! This kind of funny shit only means you guys are so close to wrapping this one up. Kudos!!!

  126. A Fan said 15 years ago:

The Red Cross’ trademark is special. For one, trademarks don’t go into the public domain (unlike copyrights), though they can be lost if unused. But the Red Cross trademark (just like the Olympic trademark) was actually created by an international treaty and is written directly into the law. So it has even more rights than an ordinary trademark and there’s no way to get rid of it πŸ™‚

I don’t know why they complain about stuff in video games (but they do). The usual fix, though, is to turn the crosses green. For some reason, that makes it all okay.

  127. Vagn said 15 years ago:

What if they used dithering of two colours to make the cross appear red, would that be acceptable?

  128. rainbow said 15 years ago:

In the dungeon man part in Earthbound there’s a little red cross above the entrance to the mini-hospital. Why was that put there, then?

  129. rainbow said 15 years ago:

here’s a link where it shows the red cross:

    http://starmen.net/mother2/maps/dungeonman.png

    Maybe it’s the angle?

  130. Mato said 15 years ago:

The EB censor-ish people did miss a few things. Also, it might be the case that slanted versions or obscured versions (see the sign in Burglin park) weren’t deemed as lawsuit-causing.

Anyway, mini-update: made a very good piece of progress. Although it won’t matter to casual players, the fix just now succeeded in doing a couple things necessary, which also makes the debug room menus work properly now. I’d show pics, but spoilers and such πŸ˜›

  131. triangle said 15 years ago:

Hooray!! Progress πŸ™‚ … not that i plan on using the debug room…but still! Good Job πŸ™‚

  132. Mato said 15 years ago:

The stuff you can do with it is pretty crazy though, and it’s a pretty big part of the post-playthrough experience. Plus, the community’s gonna want to mess with it, so it’s good that it works again.

  133. BlueStarManDX said 15 years ago:

  137. Alfonso Alfredo said 15 years ago:

@Edgar the Alien: Ha! That’s supposed to be like those “Head-on” commercials, isn’t it? They never did explain what it does…

On a more related note, I’d like to thank you for all of your work towards getting us the coveted Mother 3. I know how hard it is not to give up on something you’ve started.

  138. Mato said 15 years ago:

“@Edgar the Alien: Ha! That’s supposed to be like those β€œHead-on” commercials, isn’t it? They never did explain what it does…”

That’s because it doesn’t do anything. It’s a stick of wax. The company had claimed in a previous advertisement that HeadOn “provides fast, safe, effective headache relief,” but the Better Business Bureau objected and they’ve been careful to avoid claiming that their product actually DOES anything in subsequent ads.

  142. Lei said 15 years ago:

BTW, I remember one time my friend said she was playing Mother 3 during lunch break, some kid came over her shoulder and actually asked “Oh, are you playing Mother 3?”. She says she was pretty shocked he knew. XD

  145. A Fan said 15 years ago:

    > What if they used dithering of two colours to make the cross appear red, would that be acceptable?

No. They care how it looks, not how it’s made πŸ™‚

    > That’s supposed to be like those β€œHead-on” commercials, isn’t it? They never did explain what it does…

It’s a homeopathic remedy. Now, there are actual alternative medicines made out of herbs that can have useful effects, but homeopathic remedies aren’t among them. Though unknown herbs too often have bad effects, given that they don’t dose things in any standard way and it matters a lot whether you’re taking a half a dose or 20x a proper does of anything. You may remember the uncontrolled doses of ephedra people were taking that caused heart failure & death.

Anyhow, homeopathic remedies are different, because they don’t do a damn thing. They dilute whatever it was that supposedly had an effect with water until they’re left with pure water that they call a “tincture.” They claim that water has a “memory” even though they dilute things until they’re pure water. Whereas everyone knows that dilution makes effects *weaker*, they think it makes things *stronger*

Were that true, given all the drugs flushed down the toilets of the world (and dumped into the oceans), the massive dilution would “strengthen” things so that you’d end up with a huge dose of crack, PCP, marijuana, etc. every time you drank tap water, simply because once upon a time those things came into contact with the water supply and got diluted out of existence. Given that people aren’t dying of crack overdoses from drinking bottled water (which is actually bottled tap water, BTW), I think we can conclude that homeopathy doesn’t work.

So while there’s a scientific basis for saying that unknown herbs that get sold as ‘alternative remedies’ can have some effect (which should be properly studied and dosed, lest you kill yourself on something like ephedra), there’s absolutely no scientific basis for homeopathy and the only reason so many people give it any credence is that they don’t know how it allegedly works πŸ™‚

That said, any “remedy” that isn’t harmful can cause the placebo effect and make people feel a little better by reducing stress. But you might as well eat a drop of honey (which is good for you) or most anything else that makes you feel better instead of buying scam products.

Though I’m tempted to market a “gullibility eraser” that’s really a brick. “Apply directly to the stupid!” πŸ˜‰

    Hey Muto~

I’ve been keeping an eye on this site for almost a year now, and I never commented on any posts up until now.

So I just wanted to say that I really appreciate your work, and everyone else who’s been working so hard on this project. To spend so much time and effort on something with no profit involved, no gain other than the undying love of Mother fans everywhere… it’s just so amazing, and I wanted to thank you all for doing this.

It’s so close to completion now, I can almost taste it… I must say I’m very excited! :3

I was seeing all the other people saying that they’ve been watching this whole time and never posting just like me, and I couldn’t help but think, man, that’s so repetitive. I would never want to say that.

So I won’t. But I will say, “Mato, my hero is you!”
