Starting First Playthrough, Fixing Many Things

16 years ago by Mato

I didn’t realize it until now, but updates from now on won’t be as clockwork as previous ones. Before, there was a specific # of stuff to do (lines), but now it’s back to the vague-ish stuff. So the old progress meter pics are no more.

Anyway, like I mentioned before, I still need to play through Draft 2 to fix context issues and other stuff. I’ve been doing that the past few days, and it’s coming along incredibly well. I usually can’t stand my own writing, but actually playing through the game from the start, I find myself amazed at how so much of the text is turning out. I’m usually Mr. Ultra Pickyguy too. So far, I’m about 7.5 hours into the game, been having to try to talk to everyone in every possible situation, so I’m gonna guess the clock’ll be at 30+ hours by the time I’m done. It’s coming along great, and being able to actually see everything in context is awesome, and I’m able to fix and polish things easily this way.

I’ve also come across a number of bugs and issues so far. Only one has been game-killing, and, as to be expected, it’s from a line in “Block 0”, which is one of the most annoying things left to hack. The programmers programmed this ONE, single line separately from allllllll the other lines apparently. One line. WTF. Anyway, it shouldn’t be hard to fix when I’m done with this context fixing stuff. I’m busy this weekend (that’s what happens when you work freelance πŸ˜› ) so I’ll try to get through the playthrough next week or next weekend.

Here are some pics of bugs found, and they’ve all been fixed since. Well, except for the super garbly one, that’s the one I just mentioned that I’ll fix later.

Jeff managed to fix that last one real quickly, the others were mostly formatting/typo things. Stomping bugs and cleaning things up is always a good feeling.

Oh, almost forgot. If anyone would like to help think up names for a few enemies, see here.

Well, that’s all for now!

Once again, this block 0 of text piques my interest. I can think of no possible reason why the developers would actively choose to write an entirely different function just for this one line of text. Nope, not even the foggiest idea of what it portends.

I don’t want to talk about that enemy stuff here, because 1. I’d like to keep all the talk in one place and 2. it’s nice to leave enemies as a surprise for others.

That particular problem in that screenshot above actually could be avoided if you talked to the guy from the left. From any other direction, it’d die like that. That’s how bugs are: crazy. Place a non-stick fry pan on the stove and set to medium temperature. Place butter on pan, beat 3 eggs, add milk, and pour onto pan. Grind bat into dust and sprinkle onto eggs. i have a question for mato..or anyone that can answer. If nintendo took upon the same exact project as you are doing would it have taken them the same amount of time, more, or less?

  78. Mato said 16 years ago:

Less, as they’d have people working on it 9-5 (or 9-7 as I hear), have more people working on it full-time, wouldn’t have to mess around with assembly-level reverse engineering, etc.

Though the time from the project start to the game being on shelves might be about the same as the amount of time taken here, since it’s sometimes wiser to hold your games and release them later when the timing is right.

  100. dr.mario said 16 years ago:

DigitalSquirrel, no two languages have a 1:1 relationship with each other. When translating from one language to another, you can’t simply translate each word/meaning in order. If you did, the result would be gibberish.

Here’s a challenge: take your favorite joke, in whatever language you feel most comfortable in. Now translate it to another language, word for word, in order, not changing the meaning of any word. Now you understand a little bit of what is going on. The idea of preserving the “meaning” of every word comes from people who know very, very little about what translation actually involves.

    g’day.

  101. Paul Martin said 16 years ago:

“I made you your favorite, boys!”

As far as I understand it, this isn’t grammatically correct. Simply saying “I made your favorite, boys!” is enough to imply what’s been done and that it’s for them, and if not, the next line or action would verify it. Stating the word “you” twice in a row isn’t necessary, even when it’s slightly different.

I can’t remember where I learned that, but I know it was in english class at one point.

  102. A Fan said 16 years ago:

Well, you can *sometimes* (but not often) do word-for-word translations between languages in the same family or otherwise related closely enough, like French-English (I’m using that because it’s the only language I know much of aside from Japanese). Though in that case, we’re only related because English borrowed enough from Latin despite its Germanic roots and French is one of the Romance languages descended from Latin.

Go to Japanese and you can have sentences like “baka desu.” That aren’t very meaningful without context. (Literally, it means “idiot is,” but the subject is implied by context and could be anyone. So I could be saying that I’m an idiot, or someone else is an idiot, or…). And God help you once you start reading long treatises on the difference between ‘wa’ and ‘ga’ (the subject/topic markers)…

  103. dr.mario said 16 years ago:

“β€œI made you your favorite, boys!”
As far as I understand it, this isn’t grammatically correct.”

It’s perfectly acceptable; “you” is the indirect object (i.e. “for you”), “your favorite” is the direct object. The grammar is fine.

  104. lbc101 said 16 years ago:

And, to add to Dr. Mario, it matters little if it is grammatically correct. As long as the sentence makes sense within its given context. With a game like earthbound, the dialogue isn’t meant to be textbook English (langue), but rather more like spoken English (parole). It is the idiosyncrasies of everyday language use that adds personality and depth. If proper grammar were strictly enforced, then we would have a character-less game rather than what is sure to be a heart-wrenching, laugh-out-loud, wonderful experience that is Mother 3.

    As an example:

    “We don’t need no education
We don’t need no thought control”

Make it grammatically correct, and kill Pink Floyd in the process:).

I wonder what the original form of the Arachnid!!! and the ‘Shroom!!! were. Back along time ago, I thought that a fan translation is bad if they make new names or something like that. Now I know that doing that is one of the biggest parts of the game.

Too bad the people who translated Seikken Densetsu 3 never played secret of mana, otherwise they might know that “Dark priests” are Tomato(!) Men, “Myconids” are assasin bugs, and “Molebears” are Pebblers. Though I think “Molebear” sounds better than pebbler.

I’m actually putting together a list of all the M2 and EB enemy names right now, since it seems not many people know about how they differ. Should be up in an hour or two.

Nice that list is going to be really cool since I never thought that any of the names differed! Thanks Mato!

You guys are translating things so professionally, it makes NOA translations look pretty shabby. Good luck! I look forward to the projects’ completion!
