Starting First Playthrough, Fixing Many Things
I didn’t realize it until now, but updates from now on won’t be as clockwork as previous ones. Before, there was a specific # of stuff to do (lines), but now it’s back to the vague-ish stuff. So the old progress meter pics are no more.
Anyway, like I mentioned before, I still need to play through Draft 2 to fix context issues and other stuff. I’ve been doing that the past few days, and it’s coming along incredibly well. I usually can’t stand my own writing, but actually playing through the game from the start, I find myself amazed at how so much of the text is turning out. I’m usually Mr. Ultra Pickyguy too. So far, I’m about 7.5 hours into the game, been having to try to talk to everyone in every possible situation, so I’m gonna guess the clock’ll be at 30+ hours by the time I’m done. It’s coming along great, and being able to actually see everything in context is awesome, and I’m able to fix and polish things easily this way.
I’ve also come across a number of bugs and issues so far. Only one has been game-killing, and, as to be expected, it’s from a line in “Block 0”, which is one of the most annoying things left to hack. The programmers programmed this ONE, single line separately from allllllll the other lines apparently. One line. WTF. Anyway, it shouldn’t be hard to fix when I’m done with this context fixing stuff. I’m busy this weekend (that’s what happens when you work freelance π ) so I’ll try to get through the playthrough next week or next weekend.
Here are some pics of bugs found, and they’ve all been fixed since. Well, except for the super garbly one, that’s the one I just mentioned that I’ll fix later.
Jeff managed to fix that last one real quickly, the others were mostly formatting/typo things. Stomping bugs and cleaning things up is always a good feeling.
Oh, almost forgot. If anyone would like to help think up names for a few enemies, see here.
Well, that’s all for now!
cant wait till its done :B
Awesome Job Mato. Keep up the good work!
It’s a good thing not being too fond of cheese was fixed. I mean, who isn’t fond of cheese?
Holy gooosh.
Keep on going you guys can totally do it !
DON’T GIVE UP /YET/ haha!!!
So excitinnnggg I’m biting my fingers off haha.
I’m interested in what the one line was.
The line was a “@Got (special item)!” type of line. It’s used only for a few specific special items.
Mato,
are you interested in being deified by the roman senate? I have connections you know…
What!? I thought tanks loved cheese… =(
Im wondering if you are playing with hacked stats to help the testing go faster?
great job
Mato, you are the man. This site has been a constant distraction to me, as I check it several times an hour. Now I must study for my thermodynamics final, BLUH! Keep up the awesome work!
Cripes, bug screenshots! That’s a change. D:
Mother 3 tried Super Garbled Messages!
The But it failed!
At least those screens should halt the onslaught of ignorant “WHOA IT LOOKS LIKE THE GAME IS ALREADY DONE, CAN U RELEASE IT SOON PLZ” questions.
# someguy said 7 minutes ago:

I assume he’s playing with nothing changed, just to be ABSOLUTELY sure the real deal works.
oh boy! My favorite! OmeletteHome Ru!
good job Mato, and everyone else.
Heh, someone should make a recipe for that π
At least it wasn’t an “Omelet :|” ^_~
Sorry for the double post, this one just hit me:
An Omelette Home Run would be similar to, but not quite as awesome as, Denny’s Grand Slam Breakfast, though. ^_~
Concerning enemy names, the Road Block should be named after the Onett Police Force, or something related to it.
About the names,Is it not possible to use the translated versions of the Japanese version?if so,is it because you couldn’t find the proper translation for there names?
great job, cant wai for this π
Poor The but it. It tried so hard.
Woah…. a tank?
It reminds me of fighting those giant robots in Mother 1.
Anyway, keep up the good work!
Woohoo!
Once again, this block 0 of text piques my interest. I can think of no possible reason why the developers would actively choose to write an entirely different function just for this one line of text. Nope, not even the foggiest idea of what it portends.
If people wanna discuss the enemy name stuff, please take it to the message board post I linked to. This isn’t the place for it.
I didn’t know whether to ask this here, or in the forum, but can somebody please explain to me what this whole Block 0 thing is that’s been appearing in a lot of updates lately?
Block 0 see here
Also, I just added links to that explanation to the to-do list and the FAQ page.
I’d love to submit something to the forums, but I have applied three times and have never received a confirmation e-mail. This is the only Mother site I can post on.
The But it failed, ahh the latest dance craze (not to be confused with “The Flint”)
Is there a reason this tank doesn’t like cheese, that is just too wiered.
OMG! i love omelletteshome ru!
No it’s most likely refering to the monkey
and I would think a monkey named salsa would love cheese
nah, salsa would love nachos or chips
Salsa would like nacho cheese. Keep testing, every single little typo you miss will be remembered forever! (good luck)
The But it failed.
But you dont have to! Keep working on it Mato! π
π
What’s a “But it” and why did it fail? π
Now, if you had named it a “Beat It” and it were an item to make enemies flee…
I’m glad this game doesn’t have too much anti-aliasing. It’s so overrated. π
Isn’t too fond of cheese!
Those of you who can’t sign up for the forums, check your spam filters, and if you STILL can’t find anything there, try different email addresses. Otherwise, ask reid or ROFISH or someone (not me, I’m busy with work) to manually add your accounts, assuming that’s possible with the new forums.
I don’t want to talk about that enemy stuff here, because 1. I’d like to keep all the talk in one place and 2. it’s nice to leave enemies as a surprise for others.
Aaron: Anti-Aliasing only really works for 3D IMO.
I don’t like smudgy 2D sprites, but smoother 3D models look better.
Also, nice work Mato.
Hah, one line.
I miss these kinds of screenshots, you know, the ones with the bugs :3. Nostalgia I guess ;P. Good to see they’re getting taken care of anyway.
That glitch he showed is actually a very important instance that is impossible to avoid without cheating.
It sounds like Jeff managed to fix that problem, but we’ll have to be extra careful that there aren’t other lines. That particular problem in that screenshot above actually could be avoided if you talked to the guy from the left. From any other direction, it’d die like that. That’s how bugs are: crazy. Hopefully more “only sometimes” bugs won’t show up like that :X
that’s kind of a weird bug
……………how does that even work…… talking to the character from a certain position triggers it??? ….. :S are you going to have to talk to all characters from all 4 positions then?? π that makes me sad
I tip my hat to everyone who is, and will be, doing testing..
Does that special line belong to a sparrow, by any chance? Chirp chirp chirp?
Also, YOU ROCK ALL OF YOU! WOOO~
Darn it, Mato!
Now I’m hungry for some OmelettesHome Ru!
Just like mom used to make…
Now it’s time to get really hyped. Not like I wasn’t hyping before, it’s just that it… feels so real now… so close…
keep up the excellant work mato! seeing the work unfold before you and giving you satisfaction must be a great feeling!
I bet there’s a new internet meme amongst the bugs. π
This fan translation is getting more awesome every week!
Almost there! We’ll fill all of the pig tanks with cheese if we have to! π
“I made your favorite, boys. OmelettesHome Ru!”
Yum! Also, that made me think of this. There’s not enough space to put, “Omelette du Fromage” as your favorite food, is there? (Lolol dexter reference lololol)
Hinawaii does the hula
more meth! chug chug chug!
Mato, when you said “It sounds like Jeff managed to fix that problem” were you referring to the Block 0 bug?
Also, how can talking to a person from a different angle prevent this, would it take talking to everybody form mulitple angles to prevent this indefinitely?
OmeletteHome Ru(n)?
Is that like, an omelette with peanuts and cracker jacks in it?
I’d stop playing with dinosaurs for one of those!
I demand a silly little box showing how far you are in the game. but really, glad to see we’re already on past the second draft. why did I find those screens extremely depressing though?
You’re too good, Mato. I bet you’re absolutely effing sick of the game, though.
[…] best to start with an issue which is close to my heart. The fan translation of Mother 3 is nearing completion. If you have never played either Mother, or its sequel Earthbound, I recommend that you finding a […]
OmelettesHome Ru:
Serves 1-3 people.
Ingredients: 3 large eggs, 1 cup nuts, 1 baseball (peeled), 1 stick butter, 1 cup shredded cheese, 1 Gutsy bat (can be subsituted with a Legendary bat to reduce carbohydrate content), 1/2 cup milk, and optional garden vegetables.
Place a non-stick fry pan on the stove and set to medium temperature. Place butter on pan, beat 3 eggs, add milk, and pour onto pan. Grind bat into dust and sprinkle onto eggs. When bottom begins to cook, add nuts, cheese, baseball, and optional garden vegetables. Fold OmelettesHome Ru, cook until eggs no longer run, and serve the But it failed!
(Good work, Mato. Keep on keeping on.)
gross recipe
More like awesome π
So, I herd u leik OmelettesHome Ru.
Finally found the email, but it took quite a while to arrive, so I posted what I could remember of them over there.
OmlettesHome Ru! XD
Ronald McGiygas strikes again! (and his sidekick Evil Sparrow!)
RAAN RAAAN RUUUU!
Lol, at the Bird Stick. But, keep up the work!
that recipe is awesome
I made the recipe, it didn’t come out like I hoped…
gBev: Hopefully, you got the Fresh Eggs and used them before they hatched into Chicks. If you don’t get it made in time, you can still hold on and sell the Chickens to help fund buying replacement ingredients, though. ^_^;;
Mato its great to hear that you are amazed at how the text is turning out in the game and that there is only one game killing bug so far as expected.
Lol at Mcgiygas
Those pictures of the jarbled and japanese text. That’s the game trying to untranslate itself. lol, not really but it looks like it.
If there was a McGiygas, what would they serve besides OmelletesHome Ru?
i have a question for mato..or anyone that can answer. If nintendo took upon the same exact project as you are doing would it have taken them the same amount of time, more, or less?
Less, as they’d have people working on it 9-5 (or 9-7 as I hear), have more people working on it full-time, wouldn’t have to mess around with assembly-level reverse engineering, etc.
Though the time from the project start to the game being on shelves might be about the same as the amount of time taken here, since it’s sometimes wiser to hold your games and release them later when the timing is right.
I eat my eggs with baseballs,
I’ve done it all my life.
It makes the eggs real lumpy,
And causes lots of strife.
I think it’s kinda tasty,
And stabs well with a knife.
It keeps away the women,
Cuz I sure don’t want a wife.
I eat my eggs with baseballs,
Have you ever done that sir?
It really is quite yummy,
Tastes just like Will Shatner.
(He tastes kinda funny,
A bit like some old cat fur)
And don’t tell no one I do this,
Or you’re a rotten mean old tattler!
I eat me eggs with baseballs,
It tingles on the gums.
Goes down kinda rough, though,
(I guess I’ll need some tums)
When it hits the stomach,
It feels a little numb.
I wrote a poem about Baseball-Eggs,
Now boy do I feel DUMB!
Way to go, Mato! You da anthropomorphic tomato! And I did have one quick question about items: are any of them carried over from the two previous games?
Yeah, there are a number of items in EB also in M3. Probably the biggest one being the Franklin Badge.
But from now on please post unrelated questions like that on the message board.
Please for the love of god dont use ANY of the suggested names.
or create a patch to name them yourself. just the ones in question. seriously please.
Aren’t you being a bit dramatic?
I’m gonna use my best judgment, there’s nothing to freak out about. I only posted that topic because that way I can harness lots of people’s creativity in a brainstorming fashion. Whatever I do in the end will be done with much thought and discipline. I just want to see if any creative possibilities exist that I haven’t considered.
I should point out that New Age Retro Hippie’s original name in Mother 2 was “Carefree Guy” though.
Those tanks obviously represent NoA. We must flood their headquarters with tons of cheese! Quick! To the jets!
Oh, and OmeletesHome Ru is FTW.
Oh man. Sad to say that the video seemed to capture my attention away from the bugs that you mentioned, but…
The video seemed to capture my attention away from the bugs that you mentioned.
It was well done and quite pleasing. Much like this translation so far (well, to us, as far as “pleasing.” I think that it wouldn’t be wise to say the same to you and the team after all of the work (not to mention the hacking) has been “pleasing.” It doesn’t sound right.)
uhh
not sure how to end this without the use of the somewhat cliche “good luck” phrase
… i wish you luck
The But it failed = new Welcome to th π
The But it failed? OH NOES! Not the But it! Oh the inhumanity!
Ouchies!
The tank isn’t fond of me.
:C
hinawaii is kawaii =)
Yeah, I like New Age Retro Hippie better than the original. There are plenty of good names for pretty much all the enemies listed, so just don’t pick the ideas that suck π
What is that?! There was a Mother 2 cartoon?
That’s amazing.
I’m sure we don’t have to worry about ‘Mato’s choices of names. I mean, we’re trusting his vegetable-y (Fruity?) judgment on this entire translation thus far, aren’t we?
That, and he has superhuman instincts! How else could a lone tomato make his way to the top of the [fan-translation] food chain?
I agree with Blessfield,… why must we always question Mato’s abilities? how ’bout we stop doing that, eh? Just let the man do what he does best π
Anyone tried http://www.OmelletesHome.ru ? π
Hmm… All those enemies have great potential! Sara Sara Sahara could be called the dusty dune(s)!
Oh, and the changing of the name carefree guy to new age retro hippie could be a throwback to the hippie who uses the bull horn that raises your FIGHT so you could kill him more in Mother.
OmeletesHome Ru????
it have be a new cult!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Eghous flee.
Eghous flee.
Eghous flee.
Eghous flee.
Eghous flee.
Is this translation 100% true to the original? Or are lines changed around and modified? And why are you naming enemies? Don’t they already have names in japanese that have been translated? Please someone answer me with short email to “DigitalSquirrel@gmail.com” as I don’t keep up with this board often. Thanks!
@ Digital Squirrel: The translation will be as close to the original as possible, but some things may be different due to the culture gap between America and Japan. It may not be 100,000,000,000,000% literally translated, but it will be 100,000,000,000,000,000,000,000.00052019% AWESOMENESS!!!!
Newcomers have little faith. π
DigitalSquirrel, no two languages have a 1:1 relationship with each other. When translating from one language to another, you can’t simply translate each word/meaning in order. If you did, the result would be gibberish.
Here’s a challenge: take your favorite joke, in whatever language you feel most comfortable in. Now translate it to another language, word for word, in order, not changing the meaning of any word. Now you understand a little bit of what is going on. The idea of preserving the “meaning” of every word comes from people who know very, very little about what translation actually involves.
g’day.
“I made you your favorite, boys!”
As far as I understand it, this isn’t grammatically correct. Simply saying “I made your favorite, boys!” is enough to imply what’s been done and that it’s for them, and if not, the next line or action would verify it. Stating the word “you” twice in a row isn’t necessary, even when it’s slightly different.
I can’t remember where I learned that, but I know it was in english class at one point.
Well, you can *sometimes* (but not often) do word-for-word translations between languages in the same family or otherwise related closely enough, like French-English (I’m using that because it’s the only language I know much of aside from Japanese). Though in that case, we’re only related because English borrowed enough from Latin despite its Germanic roots and French is one of the Romance languages descended from Latin.
Go to Japanese and you can have sentences like “baka desu.” That aren’t very meaningful without context. (Literally, it means “idiot is,” but the subject is implied by context and could be anyone. So I could be saying that I’m an idiot, or someone else is an idiot, or…). And God help you once you start reading long treatises on the difference between ‘wa’ and ‘ga’ (the subject/topic markers)…
“βI made you your favorite, boys!β
As far as I understand it, this isnβt grammatically correct.”
It’s perfectly acceptable; “you” is the indirect object (i.e. “for you”), “your favorite” is the direct object. The grammar is fine.
And, to add to Dr. Mario, it matters little if it is grammatically correct. As long as the sentence makes sense within its given context. With a game like earthbound, the dialogue isn’t meant to be textbook English (langue), but rather more like spoken English (parole). It is the idiosyncrasies of everyday language use that adds personality and depth. If proper grammar were strictly enforced, then we would have a character-less game rather than what is sure to be a heart-wrenching, laugh-out-loud, wonderful experience that is Mother 3.
As an example:
“We don’t need no education
We don’t need no thought control”
Make it grammatically correct, and kill Pink Floyd in the process:).
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M_bvT-DGcWw
“I made your favorite, boys! But you can’t have any!”
” i made your guy’s favorite” game over.
Hey, grammar nazis. Go pleasure yourself with an English book and leave the job to the professional. No one cares. I don’t know how this guy puts up with all of these know-it-alls. He didn’t ask for your help, so don’t offer it. Time to take a nice slice of humility, know your place, and shut the hell up. Let the man do his job.
HAHAHA! You tell them Apteryx! I hate grammar nazis. Stop quoting your community college text books, have another bong hit, and shut up.
Hits from the bong…
Keep goin, keep goin! WOO WOO WOO!
You guys are the best!
Not that I think this discussion should be pushed any further, but is there a stereotype of grammarians being big time potheads that I’ve never heard of?
I am not actually a grammar nazi. I just thought it sounded funny. I’ve never actually heard anyone say “I made you your favorite, boys!”
Thank you for the explanation, dr.mario. You’re the only person here that didn’t respond with a snarky comment that didn’t make me feel unwelcome. Your explanation of the grammar makes sense.
” ‘i made your guyβs favorite’ game over.”
Good thing you’re not writing it. The only people I have known to write like that are in the 5-8th grade levels.
wow… (just fixing the structure so that it makes sense in the context)
dr.mario: Youβre the only person here that didnβt respond with a snarky comment (AND) that didnβt make me feel unwelcome.
Digital Squirrel: directly translating the names from japanese would be boring imagine if they used Retro New Age Hippies real name “carefree guy” wouldn’t that be sad. I think so.
Time to smoke some weed and correct peoples grammar. The best combination!!!
So then Retro New Age Hippie must be really good at correcting gammar.
C’mon, we all know New Age Retro Hippie is all about the ramblin’ shrooms. ;P
I wonder what the original form of the Arachnid!!! and the ‘Shroom!!! were. Back along time ago, I thought that a fan translation is bad if they make new names or something like that. Now I know that doing that is one of the biggest parts of the game.
Too bad the people who translated Seikken Densetsu 3 never played secret of mana, otherwise they might know that “Dark priests” are Tomato(!) Men, “Myconids” are assasin bugs, and “Molebears” are Pebblers. Though I think “Molebear” sounds better than pebbler.
I’m actually putting together a list of all the M2 and EB enemy names right now, since it seems not many people know about how they differ. Should be up in an hour or two.
Nice that list is going to be really cool since I never thought that any of the names differed! Thanks Mato!
Carefree Guy…. ridiculous.
Okay, here is the list of Mother 2 and EarthBound enemy names. Enjoy.
LOL! Worthless Protoplasm was “What do I Matter Anyway” in Mother 2?! Awesome!
Excellent.
Spiiiiiiiin!!!
Aww. I felt bad when I saw the Worthless Protoplasm’s original name.
“Deheheraas are borange” just doesn’t slide off the tongue nicely, does it?
Hah things are coming along better than I would have ever thought.
Keep going at it full speed, Mato!
That list was awesome! Keep up the good work Mato! Keep playing Mother 3….in english π
Just noticed that in the last part of this entry, where it says “Well, thatβs all for now!”, the ! is clickable. Very sneaky Mato lol
Yay! Fixing things! Keep up the good work!
Hehehehe… “The But it failed!”
You guys are translating things so professionally, it makes NOA translations look pretty shabby. Good luck! I look forward to the projects’ completion!
Why are the fobbies called diarrheas anyway exlain this to me
