Second Draft, Part 6

16 years ago by Mato

Been very busy with real life translation work, but I also decided to try to kick things up a notch here. The sooner I can get this stuff done, the better for me. So Draft #2 has jumped from 52% to 71%. No loss in quality, in fact, I’ve been pretty impressed by how it’s shaping up in-game.

All kinds of stuff in this latest batch of stuff, but mostly it was text used in lots of individual rooms. For those following with the map viewer, we’re up to Map #256 now. Here are two random pics from that huge pile. I’m trying to avoid story stuff, so sorry for the bleh pics.

Other than that, not too much else to report. Real life work is picking up now, so things may slow down here. We’ll see. I think we should be done with Draft 2 in a few weeks though. Weekends will probably be when most work on it gets done.

Not entirely related, but for those who haven’t joined in yet, this year’s EarthBound Funktastic Summer Gameplay just started, so check that out if you’re feeling bored or EarthBoundy!

Wow…I remember the days when I was bored. I wish I could have some of those back. Full time work + classes + fiance = barely any spare time, let alone for the summer playthrough of EB. I’m going to have to make time to play this when it’s done though. Good job Mato, get it done whenever, because I lack the time necessary to enjoy it anyway. Wish I was 14 again…

  21. thethirdman said 16 years ago:

Wow… that’s a really huge percentage jump. Good job you guys.

I have to say Mato you never cease to amaze me, this project is going wonderfully despite the challenges you faced along the way. Continue on your path of enlightenment and shower us fans in the glory of this translated game.

  32. Vague Rant said 16 years ago:

Hahahahaha, I don’t think people can find how to comment without the “Read the rest …” link.

Also, presumptuousness alert: I think “but REALLY, I’m a rather sidely side-character” sounds funnier and more EarthBound-y.

  33. Typhin said 16 years ago:

I dunno, “rather sidely” isn’t quite as extreme as “the sidest of side-characters”. The latter means he’s the LEAST important, rather than rather unimportant. Which, to me, is funnier. ^_^

  38. evansucks said 16 years ago:

  43. evansucks said 16 years ago:

Germ: Cuz no one’s ever been wrong before, especially concerning language as a whole or how it should be used in context to a given situation (not that i was even wrong in the first place. Mato just didnt agree). Alas, no more grammatical suggestions from myself.

  44. Germ said 16 years ago:

Great work so far Mato, several of my friends and I appreciate your dedication.

  45. Shift said 16 years ago:

Great job, guys! Mato, I’m just loning your work everywhere, from M3 to One Piece. You’re everywhere, man!

By the way, I’m just wondering if the final romanizaton for the village name will be Tazmily like in the screenshot, or if you’ll go with Tazumili per Lucas’s SSBB trophy. I do like the first one better, though…

  46. Vagn said 16 years ago:

He will call it MATO LAND, and all other locations will make reference to him some how.

  47. Mato said 16 years ago:

Pretty sure it’s gonna stay as Tazmily. I don’t think the translators were aware that an official spelling already existed. Here’s an example where it’s specifically spelled out on Nintendo’s site, it only exists on archive.org now, so unless one already knew about this, there’d be no way to find it really. boo

There’s also some cases where the name is drawn with graphics, and to fit in the SSBB name it’d have to be squished and uglified. Plus I prefer Tazmily. It took me a loooooooong long time to be able to accept it, to be honest.

you really should rename some NPC as Mato

  51. RandomRPGguy said 16 years ago:

What’s the difference between the different drafts? Just polishing up of grammar/meanings etc?

  52. Mato said 16 years ago:

Draft 2 is taking Draft 1, fixing any mistranslations, fixing any typos, smoothing out stuff to sound more natural, formatting the text properly, figuring out how to do jokes/word play/cultural references better, and other such things. It’s a lot of work, all combined into one.

Draft 3 will extra smoothing out and fixing done by fresh eyes, ie not me. You know how code and hacks need to be tested a lot to make sure everything is good? Think of Draft 3 as the same thing, except it’s fixing any last things in the script.

  53. Vagn said 16 years ago:

Hey Mato why not just release the patch after draft 2 and then everyone can provide you with feedback on the translation?

    *Watches as Mato’s head explodes*

  57. Will said 16 years ago:

It would be hot and stinky if you put a board reference somewhere in the game (such as the ad nauseum discussion of what the title should be). However, I know it would have to be appropriate to the situation… and I suppose as a professional translator you shy away from taking such liberties. However, it would be a gas for those of us who read the board! Just a little FYI.

  58. Nutsjesmoar said 16 years ago:

Re: boats/canoes – it’s called a rowboat. I think maybe in north america we have some preconception of “boat club” being the same as “yacht club” or “motor/luxury boat club”. However, there are places in the world where the filthy rich aren’t the only people who own and enjoy water-faring vehicles.

  59. Mato said 16 years ago:

Nah, I don’t intend to add inside jokes or anything. At least not intentionally. I’m trying to respect the original script and use discipline to make sure I don’t do anything too crazy or out of line with the original.

  60. Apteryx said 16 years ago:

It could get bogged down really quick with even a couple little inside jokes. Best to play it safe.

Hey Mato, just wondering what recording program you use to record the preview clips. I use VBA for recording purposes, using the in-game recorder so far I can only get Full Frames to work (but with major lag). I can’t use the compressors, otherwise the finished product just ends up a 0kb file. Dunno if it’s just on M3 or if it’s for all games though.

Could use a little help out of the hole if you have the time. Thanks in advance. Great job on the hacking, too.

  122. JeffMan said 16 years ago:

some person: You can get a program called VirtualDub to compress the full frames avi afterwards, and then delete the original.

  123. some person said 16 years ago:

    Thanks, jeff.

  124. Mato said 16 years ago:

It’s weird that the compression doesn’t work with VBA directly, but yeah, if you gotta do full frames, you can always use VirtualDub or something like that to do the compressing/processing/extra stuff if you want. It might also depend on what version of VBA you’re using and what OS you’re using.

This really isn’t project-related though, so you should probably post it in the Tech Talk area of the starmen.net forums if you have more questions/problems.

Mr. Mato, what exactly is in the huge void of the game where the final 30% is supposed to be? There are a lot of blank maps, but why are they blank? Do they hold unviewable stuff in them?

That might not sound like much, but the early blocks are where most of the text is. Thereโ€™s also a bit of repeated text, and a lot of later maps donโ€™t have any text at all. Also, many of these early blocks contain extra-long tutorial text. Some blocks can contain 100+ lines, while other blocks contain 0 lines. In any case, as time goes on, youโ€™ll see the block count increase faster and faster. Youโ€™ll see ๐Ÿ˜‰ My plan is to do a manageable # of blocks each day and then on the weekends, do a whole bunch.

  164. Vague Rant said 16 years ago:

Pff, of course not, I certainly wouldn’t date a guy who was translating Mother 3.

  165. Exp HP said 16 years ago:

If only the translators at Capcom were this good. Or at least 1% as good as this. Mega Man Battle Network 4’s translation falls at about .02% of the quality of this hack.

By the way, are you remembering to double space after using a period, question mark, exclaimation point, and colon (all of which also require capitalization)? And are you remembering that an ellipsis (” . . . “) has a space before and after it, as well as a space inbetween each dot? And for anybody in the game who speaks in olde timey English, are you remembering that “thou” is only the singular form of “you,” and so it is not used when speaking to more than one person?

Those are definitely things that wouldn’t make it through Capcom’s thick skull. I’ve been playing MMBN5DTDS all day, and the mistakes are painful.

  166. Vague Rant said 16 years ago:

Double spacing is an archaic practice since the introduction of variable width fonts; it was intended to make typewritten text more legible, and is thus no longer necessary in most cases.

There are a number of usage rules surrounding the ellipsis, and spacing each period is certainly not the only correct usage. I do agree with spaces before and after the ellipsis, however.

Also, it is not a requirement of the English language for that which follows a colon to be capitalised; while in some cases it might be (such as if it is speech which follows, as in a script, for example), it’s not a universal rule by any stretch.

Apologies for what may seem like harshness in my tone: I appreciate your sentiment, but feel that it might benefit us all if you looked further into some of the language rules you’ve quoted before advising anyone further.

  167. Apteryx said 16 years ago:

… and then there’s the viewpoint of “who cares?”. As long as it’s coherent and not written in lolomgwtfbbq, then why get nitpicky? A word to the wise; don’t tell someone how to do or improve their job when they haven’t asked, especially when they are experienced and do it for a living. Don’t piss in the guy’s corn flakes, just let him get it done without sounding like a bunch of 6 year olds pissing their pants with uncontrolled excitement while at the same time being a know-it-all douche.

    Go Team-Mato

  168. Inzoum said 16 years ago:

I’ll have to agree with Vague Rant here. I studied graphic design in the recent years and all those things about double-spacing after a period isn’t worth squat anymore. That was good for 1960s secretaries using typewriters, or it may still be of use for writing in Notepad in monospace fonts, but in the context of a variable width font, these rules don’t apply, in fact they’d make the text look fugly.

Regarding the ellipsis, it’s not just three consecutive periods! There is a character to type it:

    โ€ฆ (U+2026) ‘HORIZONTAL ELLIPSIS’

Regarding spaces, I could go on a great deal about what is considered proper spacing today in professional layouts, but it honestly wouldn’t serve this community given the fact the text seen in Mother 3 hardly constitutes full, hierarchic bodies of text (with only 2-3 lines at a time per dialog) so there’s no real concern for rivers or other spacing oddities. Also, the character set probably doesn’t contain all the necessary typographic spaces and punctuation (such as the Unicode-defined Ellipsis above) to start nitpicking about whether a colon should be followed or preceded by a regular space or a 1/4-em (four-per-em) space

  169. Vagn said 16 years ago:

Since Mato is a professional translator I’m sure he knows what he is doing, I wouldn’t worry about it guys.

  170. MasterInsan0 said 16 years ago:

Wow…there’s a lot of arrogance in some of the comments here.

“By the way, are you remembering to ? And are you remembering that ? And for , are you remembering that , and so ?”

Seriously? I can’t even fathom what would be running through your mind that would make you ask those questions, especially in the way that you asked them. I cut out the actual content to hopefully show you just how offensively-worded that was.

This is a translation of a video game, not a friggin masters thesis. It’s alright to be a little more casual in this case.

  171. sunzo132 said 16 years ago:

I’ve noticed the days that gone by and the percentages of completion after the day. (I know you’re probably working in real life and everything) But,is there like more text to translate now than the beginning?

I was sort of showing off my trivial knowledge of grammar. Tsk, tsk, tsk, self.

It’s hardly important for him to do any of the things with spacing. Although I do feel that capitalization after a colon (and not capitalizing after a semicolon) is important, but there sure aren’t a whole ton of semicolons in dialogue.

  173. Triangle said 16 years ago:

  184. SAM-E-BOI said 16 years ago:

    Oh!! I just remembered something!

Hey Mato, remeber all that dummied out data that you mentioned? I believe that you also mentioned that it included numerous enemies and even a boss or two? If those memories are correct, than will you be replacing some of that data back into the translations, such as outting the music into the sound tester and that boss fight somewhere?

If no, than would there be a way to add a bonus dungeon thing in a future hack of the game?

  185. Mato said 16 years ago:

The sound player doesn’t have all the music in the game as it is. To put in stuff that was genuinely left out, we’d have to replace stuff in the current list of 250 songs. So there’s no point to that.

As for enemies and bosses, no, don’t expect anything like that to be added back into the game. They’re already easily accessible via cheat codes anyway. Plus we don’t know all the technical info to do stuff like that. Nor do we know the technical info to add new NPCs, so I ask that people stop suggesting that, too.

  186. sunzo132 said 16 years ago:

Is there like more text at this point of the project than the beginning?

  194. A Fan said 16 years ago:

Mato, maybe you should start writing up the patch notes with some of these questions that are getting asked, so you have less work later? ๐Ÿ™‚

I know that I want to remember to download the extra music tracks when I’m not at work, etc.

But if JeffMan has extra time, would it be bad for him to try and hack the sound player to add the otherwise inaccessible songs to it? Because it seems sad that most people might not get to appreciate them, otherwise.

  195. Mato said 16 years ago:

We’ll post cheat codes and stuff to access stuff like that, in fact, I already did in that topic I linked to up above. But most stuff will probably best be done after the translation.

  196. Aron said 16 years ago:

  219. Karma said 16 years ago:

I love how people are being all “SERIUS BIZNESS” here with these comments.

You know what? Here are the facts.

    1. Mato is translating Mother 3.
    2. He has a blog to show the progress.
    3. He’s awesome for doing this.
    4. It’ll be great to play this game in English.

Besides those 5 important points, I really have to laugh at just how, pointless, arrogant, argumentative, uber-serious and either overly, anally, or ridiculously critical half of the comments are and how absolutely fanboyish the other half are.

One guy comes along and says something that basically amounts to “UR DOING IT WRONG” and then whether or not he was even joking or not, a bunch of fanboys have to come in to save their hero from the accusations of someone that everyone immediately gets volatile towards as if this person was evil incarnate.

And then you yet, have other people getting into huge debates about whether or not Mato should hurry up or take his time.

Now, the majority of the time, the comments are people praising Mato for a job well done, and that’s fine.

I’m sure that he likes the inspiration and that it helps him a lot, and makes him feel all good and warm inside and gives him the strength to tackle the long and tedious hors of slogging through labyrinthine programming code and/or working through the nights and days tackling written draft work.

But why in the hell do some of you people continue to insist on getting into heated, lengthy, serious, long winded arguments over whether or not he’s doing absolutely everything to suit your own, special, self-centered, and specific wants and needs, or not?

For god’s sake, this is a fan translation, not open debate night at Fanboy Community Collage.

Give him his props if you must, but don’t sit around either telling him what to do, making half-assed jokes about telling him what to do, and then engaging in huge, analytical debate wars about whether or not someone is or is not a menace to the Blog.

Honestly, this whole thing is starting to take a bloated life of it’s own with people ludicrously overreacting to just about everything.

I’m sure Mato wants to feel appreciated, not be the center or at least a revolving planet around the orbit of every “omg serious debate time” conversation arc that pops up.

One would have thought that the satire of the Stork Club in Earthbound would have clued people into the futility of long winded theological debates about something as simple as a fan translation project.

When the blog is unified in patting Mato on the back as i’m sure helps him get through a lot of the trying times, it’s at it’s best.

But when you guys start ripping into each other over semantical nonsense about grammar, punctuation, english skills, or “whether or not someone is being helpful, joking, or a jerk” or not, it makes you guys look dumb and i’m sure that, at times, it makes Mato either sigh with annoyance or just think about moderating comments, which wouldn’t be good for anyone.

Hopefully, people are going to chill out and stop being all “serious buisness” about these “debates”…

….or…. people might try to just call me a hypocrite for making a lengthy post, trying to point out the silliness of it all….

But either way, really… seriously… can we just knock it off and enjoy the fact that Mother 3 is being put into GOOD English and that someone is putting in the hard work trying to make it so, without ripping each other into tiny, bite sized pieces in the process?

    Thanks.
