Alive and Okay
It’s been a real-life-workathon week, so not too much Draft 2 progress in the past few days. Got a few more % done, hopefully we’ll be in the 60%-70% mark sometime next week.
For now, here are a few pics of stuff from today. Nothing special; most of the stuff I did today was main story stuff I don’t want to show here.
Jeff’s been mighty busy with real life too, but he’s been working on hacking stuff when the chance allows. Very early testing has also started, and a few bugs have turned up and been squished shortly after. Luckily for us, they’ve mostly been very simple bugs so far, which is a good sign.
The blog’s been getting an insane number of comments each update now, many of which are off-topic or would be better posted elsewhere. So I made a spillover board real quick here. If you want to discuss something spoilery or something not related to the current update, please post over there. I can’t keep up with 400+ comments, and I doubt regular visitors can either. This will also make it easier for people to find relevant info and questions in the blog comments. I recommend checking it out, even if you don’t want to comment on stuff. There’s all kinds of useful and interesting info in there.

Man, I can’t quite believe the project has come this far. Judging from how horrendously coded everyone was saying M3 was back in 2006, it’s amazing that you’ve reached the point where nearly all the seriously difficult hacking is done and dusted. Congratulations thus far!

Lets hope the hard part is over and all you have to do now is translate text, no more memory crap, bugs, or line limitations hopefully. Remember, those 400+ people who posted are all chearing you on (and for every one that comments, there are bound to be dozens of lurkers, does this site tell you how many page views you get?). No I believe that he said he was the only translator.
Mato’s working on the second draft, demi will work on the third. “Last-minute” fixes and alterations will be made by all of the translators, at least that is what I would assume.

I’m going to be at summer camp for the next 7-8 weeks. I’ll miss all the excitement as draft two finishes up, but when I get back in August, hopefully draft three will be well underway, and testing will be getting done, too. 😀

Of course I intend on respecting your wishes, but if I may ask, what legal trouble do you think linking to special cart devices is going to get you into? I don’t even see any legal issue with this patch.
To the best of my knowledge, those devices have at least two perfectly legitimate uses (playing backups of games one already owns, and playing custom homebrew) and things like your patch add a new legitimate use (playing patched versions of games one already owns). Sure they can be used for piracy, and I’d be stupid to say I didn’t think a number of people were going to acquire this game illegally when your patch comes out, but to suggest that someone can be punished for referencing a site that sells a device that can potentially be used for copyright infringement seems to me to be pushing it.
The translation is a derivative translation made without the creator’s consent. Thus it violates international copyright law. If you weren’t aware of that, then 😯
The thing about linking to sites selling flash carts is two-fold. One, if my butt does wind up in court, I’d like them to have fewer things to throw at me. Even if stuff doesn’t stick. It’s not asking too much, is it? It’s like asking for ROM sites – sure there are sites with all legal PD ROMs, but we know the real deal. Anyway, the second thing is that I don’t want to be helping anyone’s specific business via this project, unless it’s something akin to helping people buy official merchandise.

It sounds like you’re at the fun-project-feels-more-like-work phase. I’ve done lots of stuff like this and it’s the worst part. Almost as worst, sometimes actually is, as the 30% hump. Luckily it’s soon followed by the oh-my-god-I’m-actually-gonna-finish-this bliss =)

I kind of enjoyed translating some Japanese words for Arashi. It sure helps my own Japanese too. Well I guess we could start a topic in the spillover forum for that… as long as it stays spoilers free, which is what I like in this blog – to be able to talk with other Mother fans without having to worry about spoilers.
Well just take your time. And remember to check that draft 3 retains all of the jokes and word games you translate. You wouldn’t want them to be gone after all of this hard work.

Anony: No, it’s text data which contains the unauthorized translated text, the format it’s in doesn’t matter. Distributing the ROM is another thing altogether, and that one’s more obviously illegal.
Way to go! I’ve been reading and viewing these updates since the very beginning! I’m glad to see that the translation was not dumped-as they usually are. Anyway, I’d just like to say thanks for helping to bring my favorite game series over into the hands of people who don’t read japanese.

Let’s all hope though that NOA doesn’t try to stop you. Let’s see, after you’re done with the Draft, what do you do after that? Are you going to fix the few bugs and misc. stuff while Reid plays through the game? I mean, you could take a few days of rest and get one with the misc stuff. Just wondering because I have no idea what jeffman is doing and he might be doing some of that misc. stuff.
Oh and sorry for double posting, but how much text would all that be if you were to put it in a word processor? Maybe 100 pages or so? I know it’s a lot, but I’d like a nice “scale” to see how far you’ve gone.
After Draft 2, I’m gonna play the game with the new script in place so I can fix context issues everywhere, and along the way, document bugs.
The script will then go to draft 3, which I’m not really sure about the details right now. We’ll figure that out when the time comes. demi seems pretty busy with his game business, we’ll see how things are in a few weeks.
While Draft 3 is going on, I’ll be translating any other remaining stuff, want to give the battle text a thorough makeover (only a few days there).
All the while, Jeff and I will be finishing a few last hacks and fixing any bugs that turn up.
Then testing will begin. After testing will be patch release time.
Incidentally, Draft 1, when opened in MS Word, is 817 pages.

If he is indeed a tomato, then his parent might be considered the vine from which he was grown, and he actually knew them until he was ripe enough to be harvested… then he managed to escape the tomato paste factory and teach himself programming and become bilingual. And the last chapter of the Inu-Yasha manga coming out this week makes me realize that it’ll be weird to see the end of this project 🙂 It’s always kinda a let down when I finish a game or series or whatever.

After this, EB0 hack is still going to be on hold. At the moment I don’t have much interest in it, and I really want to stay away from hacking for a while. It wouldn’t be so bad if only map editing was more flexible and the two map editors weren’t so buggy and barfy.

I played some random little parts later in the game, stuff I did recently, and I’m feeling a little better about how the text is turning out. When I played Chapter 1 like a week ago, I was struck by the “meh” monster. So maybe it was a case of just having played that chapter way too much in the last 2+ years.
I’ve also noticed a few typos, but definitely not as many as in Draft 1.

Hey Mato, I just thought of something last night…
If Nintendo announced that they were going to do an English translation of Mother 3 the day before you were gonna release the patch, would you still do it?
Most probably no.
That would be cruel.
AND we would have to wait even longer for M3 to get translated.
No he wouldn’t release it. Check the FAQ. Also, it’s incredibly unlikely that Nintendo would do that.

Honestly, everyone should work as hard for everyone else as these guys do for the fans of mother/earthbound. It really shows you the world we live in when this kind of thing (you know, cool crap that takes a lot of time and effort but will reap no monetary value for the creator) doesn’t happen very often.
All i know is that, if i ever create anything that the whole world wants, I’m giving it away too. Happiness shouldn’t be at the expenditure of other people.

Why doesn’t everyone just let Mato do things the way he wants to 😛 If you can’t wait there is always the menu patch, that is afterall why he made it.
Yeah, working in a journalism setting myself, I can’t stress how important it is for someone else to look over something before it goes out.
When you write a story or publish a media guide, having other people look over your work is crucial. It’s to catch typos that your eye will not see because you are used to looking at the material for so long.
I commend the team for taking this approach.

If you really want to play the game right now download the menu patch and a translation faq. I’m sure it’s really frustrating for Mato when people keep asking him questions like you are. He is at a percentage greater than or equal to the one he posted last, and he will progress as he sees fit.

Do you personally think that they did a good job with the music and stage in Brawl? I haven’t played Mother 3 with a guide or anything, but I was just wondering what someone who knows so much about the game thinks.

OMG I never played EB0 past like the first screen many years ago. I couldn’t stand how it looked and handled (though I am usually a very graphics-neutral person). I didn’t know there was an EB0 in EB hack.

Honestly, I wont give a crap if there are a few typos. I just want to have the story told to me and be able to play and know what is going on and what people are saying. Odds are, there will be a typo or two, but I think that is awesome. I know that I would still be happy even if typos were somewhat frequent. I think that I can speak for everyone and say that we are all extremely grateful that you even bothered to translate this game at all.
Yes Mother 3 is more important. True, EB 0 was a tad annoying just due to the game layout (I hated having a random encounter every 3 seconds, or having to level up ALL THE TIME). Earthbound was nice cause you leveled up at about the rate you needed.
Man, I still check this site every few hours to see what people have posted or if Mato has posted. I wonder if Mato is checking every few hours to see what we have all posted.

@Master of Ramen: If you’re planning on using the menu patch with the EZ-flash 3-in-1, go to the flash cart thread on the spillover board and download my patch to fix sleep mode, which doesn’t work properly without my patch on the 3-in-1.

I started using the menu patch last night. Couldn’t help it. I’m still gonna play the full version, no doubt. I suppose it’ll be like when i watched Death Note. I watched it in Japanese cuz i was really interested, and i’m watching it again in English to enjoy it more.
I think the best example of why people shouldn’t rush a translation can be found in “All your base are belong to us”. If you don’t know what I am talking about, look it up. Also, rember that a handheld game can NOT be patched (at least retail ones) after they are made. Sure Mato and the rest of the team could just make a second or even third patch if some bug or bugs went undiscovered but that looks sloppy and causes problems. How many problems did a small spelling error cause? I don’t want to imagine what a problematic patch causes.
I’m with mike k. As great as the menu patch is, I refuse to use it.
I’d rather play it in full then have the experience lessened by having to switch over to a translation guide/paper thingy every time someone says something.

Hey Mato! Would it be possible for you to quote the question that you’re answering in your posts? If that’s too much of a hassle then don’t worry about it. I was just suggesting it cause with all the spam here I just scroll through and look for your red posts but then I sometimes don’t know what you’re answering and scrolling back up is even hard to do sometimes with the amount of spam. That way the people that don’t really wanna look through all of the other junk can just scroll to your posts and know what’s going on.
Oh and also.. I just wanted to suggest to reidman that he highlight all of the posts from the team. I sometimes miss his and Jeff’s posts (and everyone else that is in the team that don’t post that often) cause of all the spam. We do care what you guys have to say! =D

I had a dream last night where everyone could video conference this blog, Mato had decided to remake the game in 3-d, and the people from Star Trek IV were looking for plutonium in public restrooms. I liked the 3-d effects for Mother 3 overall.
I’ve lost count of how many times I’ve checked this site in the past couple of days. And each time I see that graphic with a new percentage, I get that much more excited about this project finally coming to completion.
It must be that Mitch has been channeling the power he used to use to make pretty pictures for us into Mato’s translation center of his brain.

Hey Mike K, I think Mato said he would play through after draft 2 was done to make sure it works, and then I think if I remember right he and the other translators will all play draft 3 to beta test the patch before releasing it. I guess that means he will play through.
This is like the fifth time I checked the site in the last 15 minutes. I just keep gravitating back here. It’s like this all day. It’s practically a reflex, list of websites comes up, I just gotta click on this one. =P

I just got into Mother/Earthbound and how do you use the emulater and is it useable with vista computers.Also do you have to buy anything to use it can some one explain?

I have played brawl w/ Lucas for the majority of the time and played the subspace Emissary along like 3 times. I don’t see anything that spoils things about Mother 3

sunzo132: What constitutes a spoiler varies greatly from person to person. It’s generally accepted that the trophy descriptions and the codec conversation are in clear spoiler territory though.

if its an emulator you want, look for VBA Collector’s Edition, to add onto Mato’s comment. it’s better than the original VBA, and more optimized for better frame rates. I actually started a thread relating to emulators on the starmen.net forums. Happy Mother-ing!
And personally, typos are insignificant compared to accurate translations :3

You bet it will *_* Back when I was doing gpSP one of my major goals was to get 32MB ROMs working before the Mother 3 translation was done. I got that done in October 2006 though, so my expectations might have been a little high.
I was always planning on playing it on PSP once it was finally released, but I don’t know if I have it in me anymore to pull out the PSP for it. I’ll probably just play it on a PC like a normal person.
Just to confirm, I have played the game (not any of the team’s translated versions, but I’d be shocked if any of the hacking broke things for the emulator) before, using a save a friend of mine sent me. I think using version 0.9…

Just beat Earthbound Zero for I think the first time. I thought I beat it a long time ago, shortly after Demi dumped it, but I sure don’t remember the last two-thirds of the game.
Don’t think I’ll let Mother 3 go that long without beating it.
