Translation Notes, Part 1

16 years ago by Mato

It’s kind of rambly and there’s a lot of stuff to cover as the game is just starting, but for those who are interested, part 1 of the translation notes/commentary is up here:

http://mother3.fobby.net/notes/

If anyone has good questions for this part of the game that I haven’t covered, I still have enough energy to go add the answers into the notes. Anyway, I hope people find these notes interesting. They’re kind of like my MOTHER 2 and Earthbound comparison site, except this time it’s my own translation I’m picking apart. What an odd situation 😛

It would be nice, that videos could be mirrored somewhere else, because Veoh is not available in some countries – including the one I reside in.

I’ve been waiting for these since I beat the game. This will be interesting.

There’s a typo in the third paragraph of the Naming Screens section – “Incidentally, al”

I bet you’re sick of people pointing out typos, heh.

nice man, thanks for this, should make for interesting reading =)

diablow: Youtube isn’t an option, and I couldn’t get Google Video’s uploading program to work, so I had no other choice. Do you have any other suggestions? I didn’t know Veoh didn’t work everywhere.

Fudgehat: Thanks, I wrote most of that at like 4 am. And yeah to your other observation 😉

I see a lot of Starmen using Vimeo, Mato.

    Thanks for this, Mato!

I love this kind of information and find it endlessly fascinating. I’ve been looking forward to these notes, and will look eagerly forward to the next notes as well. =P

    Jatopian: Vimeo says:

“Please upload a video only if:
You created it, or participated closely in its creation. No TV shows, footage you found on the web, or gaming videos. “I have permission” does not mean you created it.”

the translation notes are great. this will really make decisions for the “other translations” translators a lot harder ;P

seriously though. I’d have loved to see you have changed the two pigs’ dialogue. I talked to the left one first, too. I bet everyone does that. maybe in version 1.1?

also, the line of the frog near the end (nice-people-tube-frog) would have been A LOT better if it were the line from the beginning. it kind of adds that kind of shudder you always get when you see that yet another thing has been corrupted by Porky.

also, Amber is a lot more fitting than Hinawa. Kumatora is understandable, since she, as a character, is rather exotic, but Hinawa is simply out-of-place. damn you, Brawl translators!!

Really interesting, I like how even some of most apparently trivial things required lots of thinking and research. Keep ’em coming!

This is fascinating, thank you for taking the time to go through it like this. (Thanks as well for the Mother 2 / Earthbound comparison site, although I think perhaps the most interesting part of that was the change in your perspective as, I presume, you did more translation.)

If it’s any consolation, I thought that the sound skipping at the end of the name select screen was intentional, a creepy bit of fragmentation after the sweet scene with the family. (It reminded me of the creepy zombie music in Threed, one of my favorite parts of Earthbound.) I played the Japanese version a while back, so I don’t know why I thought that, but still I like it better with the skipping!

Mato made an appearance in this comic (as a psp lol):

Okay, I’ve got a couple of questions. Mato, when are you going to list a set of gameshark codes with all of the unused enemies?

Also to anyone who uses gpsp, how do you make the .cht files? Is there a GUI? Or better yet, is there someone here that is kind enough to post their own gpsp cheat files?

  16. SoreThumb said 16 years ago:

Not sure if Mato = PSP as a ‘cameo’– if it were a Tomato, that’d make much more ‘cameo sense’.

Anyways, maybe you could convince Reid (or do it yourself ‘devotion’) to add the Translation Note thing in the top corner. I’d love to read that, can’t wait until you keep working!

Maybe I should actually play the game now.. WEll, I mean, besides the japanese version I went through thanks to Spookychee 😮

Mato: I believe that “no gaming videos” means that you can’t upload videos of games that you didn’t work on… I’m pretty sure that if you asked you’d be able to upload your video to Vimeo. 🙂

  18. Aerostella said 16 years ago:

Yay, thanks. I can’t wait to read it!

“PK Love”-n the notes so far!

About Boney: I always assumed his name was a reference to, well, bones. Dogs love dem bones, ya know.

    @Jay: Bfffttaah-ha-ha-ha-ha!

Tomato isn’t the PSP. That PSP is a re-occuring character in that comic.

  21. Anonymous said 16 years ago:

Oh, this is pretty cool. 🙂 Can’t wait to see more.

  22. Shift said 16 years ago:

Um, is there any official place to leave notes on the notes?

  23. Mato said 16 years ago:

Not really, you can probably use the forums I guess.
