Testing is Giant Step

16 years ago by Mato

Testing continues, testers are already starting to finish their first playthrough. No new bugs to report since last weekend, which is excellent news.

Jeff and I fixed the Sleep Mode text bug the other day, I fixed the Antidote text bug, and sblur and Jeff even went and fixed one of those miniscule naming screen issues that I mentioned an update or two ago.

Compare to last update:

I started my own testing yesterday, all is going well. I’ve even started writing up the readme if that’s any indication πŸ˜‰ It’s still a couple weeks off, assuming no big bugs show up, but with each passing day such bugs seem less and less likely.

Not sure if sblur has ever gotten too many shout-outs, but I’d like to say thanks. As always, thanks to Mato and JeffMan and any others working behind the scenes as well.

    WooHOO thanks team!

  13. Germ said 16 years ago:

    An additional question:

Many updates ago, when discussing the potential distribution methods for the patch, it was mentioned that a download ‘count’ would be a great statistic to have (for multiple reasons). I agree with that assessment.

With possibilities still looming (with torrents in the mix), I was curious to know if that initial sentiment was still held by the team and, if so, are efforts being made with such an accrual in mind?

  14. Mato said 16 years ago:

If we do have something like that, we’d rather not have it public. Though we’d mention the # a while afterward.

A thought occurred to me last night. Mato, do you think it would be a possibility for you to get a scan of the game’s manual and do a translation of it to include with the patch so that we get the full Mother 3 experience, in English?

i can’t thank everybody involved in this project enough, especially mato. following this site and the progress for a very long time now, i hadn’t actually thought that the updates would keep on coming time after time, never leaving us waiting for too long.
just how many translation projects give up or take forever? and most of them sure as hell don’t need to put up with the technical isses Mother 3 has put you guys through.
and thinking this little gem might be availiable in just a few weeks fills me with excitement and already has me digging out my old F2A cartridge and the game boy micro.

  56. HellHammer said 16 years ago:

    Hey Mato,

Thanks again for the update and all your work. I wonder though, would you be willing to share with us what platform everyone is using for testing? Has anyone attempted to test the game on flash carts just yet? If so, then on what consoles?

I’ve been thinking lately of just how many platforms one could potentially enjoy Mother 3 on, GBA, GBA SP, GBM, GBPlayer, DS, DSlite,(DSi), and emulation on PSP and PC. It’s crazy.

  57. mobilisq said 16 years ago:

Heyo, heres a question. Since the most current build of VBA for the wii actually runs at near full emulation, is anybody bothering to run a test play on it?

I wouldnt expect it to play any differently than the pc based VBA really, but, you know.

  58. Brandon said 16 years ago:

A year ago when I was following this project, I was so excited and like many other users had a lot of anticipation for this release =)

With knowing that it was going to take an insane amount of time to do the work you guys do, I decided to start building a time machine. Unfortunately, I do not think I am ever going to complete it in my life time.

I figured if I completed it in my lifetime, I will see myself pop right in front of me and say “Congratulations, you built a time machine!!!” But I have yet to see it. Unless I built a time machine and knowing how much destruction it would cause, I went back in to the past and prevented myself to build one…

Either way, congratulations on how close you are to finishing this patch =) If you had a pebble for every obstacle that you had to get past, you could probably build a few London Bridges! ^_^

Best of luck with the last bit of the project =)

I was actually hoping Exophase would be around to test the game, since he’s the one who wrote that good GBA emulator for the PSP. But just can’t seem to get his attention. I was planning on getting a PSP this month for the Star Ocean remaking coming out in a few weeks, but I don’t want to risk messing it up and I don’t feel like dealing with all that version switching junk to get homebrew working.

I have homebrew working on my Wii, but the problem is that when my SD card is in the Wii, none of the apps can save to it, so I can’t save games on any emus. I’d try out VBA on my Wii, but there isn’t much point if I can’t save the game or make savestates. From what I hear, though, the Wii port of VBA is kind of slow/buggy and doesn’t play Japanese Mother 3 at a nice speed. Can anyone verify?

  90. Mikeyman64 said 16 years ago:

I wouldn’t be surprised if you guys get some free-lance offers once this thing is out. It takes a lot of determination to finish a project like this, and I think that if the “big guys” are watching, they’ll think of this as a catch. Just imagine what you guys could do with a professional size team.

  92. Jay6 said 16 years ago:

There are a few GBA emulators for Wii Homebrew. The one I’m currently running runs games almost normally, but with a few slowdowns that I’ve noticed when playing games like Golden Sun. Then again, I’m playing on an older version of this GBA emulator. Haven’t tried any later versions. Although, I never had a problem with saving/loading game data…

  93. s3phir0th115 said 16 years ago:

I’ve not had personal experience with any Wii homebrew, but I can say that it has been stated by developers that the Wii is considered as powerful as the Xbox.

The Xbox has homebrew too, as well as a VBA port. I just started up my Xbox to test, and Mother 3 runs fine when I try to run it.

That’s not the say the Wii one works fine, but it is certainly powerful enough.

  94. DeadPool said 16 years ago:

    ooohhh, Giant Step… i get it…

  95. BrickRoadDX said 16 years ago:

Yeah, when I used the VBA emulator it seemed to work and save fine for the most part, but there were no savestates (only SRAM). Slowdowns oucurred during Golden Sun, but I never tried with Mother 3 (I’ve waited too long to spoil it, even with itself, if that makes any sense).

  96. Blue Protoman said 16 years ago:

    I won’t need a DS/DSi/GBA to play this. I have a GP2X and a GBA emulator.

  97. wilewit said 16 years ago:

  98. Jay6 said 16 years ago:

I just busted out Mother 3 on my psp for the first time, unpatched of course, and it resembles and feels like Earthbound in so many ways it makes me terribly excited. Between Mother 3, Fallout 3, and Left 4 dead. I will be a busy person the next couple months πŸ™‚

Thanks again for your determination on this project.

  102. Zaxtur said 16 years ago:

@Mato I’ve sampled the Mother 3 menu patch on the Wii VBA Emulator and it seems to run at a good speed, but the only problem I have with it is that the audio sounds bad. I kinda hear static and pop, other than that it seems to work OK. I’m not sure why you can’t save on your SD card. Maybe it’s locked or something.

  103. Acacia Sgt said 16 years ago:

    Nice Earthbound reference.

  104. Erik said 16 years ago:

@Mato: If you don’t mind modding an Original Exbox, you can get VBA for it. Also, how many times have you beat Mother 3 through the past year or so? I get the feeling I will never beat it however many times you have.

  105. Shadowed State of Mind said 16 years ago:

Hmm, Wii eh? Well I DO have homebrew on it, including the latest version of the VBA emulator compatible with it and yes, Mother 3, albeit with the Menu patch. Now I was just doing a minor test only (just fooling around) so I barely got through with the prologue (that combo system will take some heavy getting used to, but whatever). Anyway, it runs pristinely…well, at least in my case. Not quite silky smooth but no bugs in the framerate either (not that it can be changed on the Wii version).

    That helps Mato?

  106. tibbs said 16 years ago:

Oh, I just pray, like Paula, that it will work on the GBA emulator for the PSP… My gpsp kai runs Mother 3 J, with the menu patch, perfectly… but i haven’t gotten too far so as not to spoil myself. I just hope it will run as smooth with the full patch. Paula, pray for us.

  107. Shadowed State of Mind said 16 years ago:

OH! Addendum to my previous comment: I never tried saving on Mother 3 when trying it out for a bit but I CAN save with the other ROMs. Therefore I assume that I can save with Mother 3 as well. So you might want to get that problem checked out. Might be your SD card. I don’t know.

  108. SAM-E-BOI said 16 years ago:

Mato, for all the hacking and programing that you’ve managed to learn in addition to your obvious common sense and attention to detail, hacking a PSP should be no trouble. As long as you buy a spare battery to work with, there is little risk of a real mess-up. I’d be glad to help you walk through the process if you need it. It really is a lot simpler than it looks as long as you read the read-me’s.

    Mato:

As far as the latest VBA emulator versions [for the Wii] are concerned, they all run m3 smoothly for the most part. The most recent version by Tantric (VBA GX 1.0.1) runs Mother 3 at full speed. If I recall correctly, that version had a savestate feature (which are called snapshots in that version). However, from my experience, it is nearly impossible to get the “battle timings” down, as the sound crackles, etc. during battle. Otherwise, I played up to Chapter 4 (stopped after dieing a lot; decided to wait for the final patch) without any other problems.

I would use the VBA version by Tantric (VBA GX 1.0.1) as it’s the only version being maintained.

Also, is your SD card locked? That could be why you can’t save to your SD card. Either that, or you set up the file directories incorrectly.

‘Nuff of my babbling. Excellent work, I look forward to the final patch. πŸ™‚

And back on topic, great job with the final hacking. Since there are so few of errors, it proves the previous statement, because if you didn’t do a great job, it would bug out all the time.

For emulators to run properly on the Wii, the SD card needs to be FAT16. Also, AFAIK, all emulators require that you manually create a folder named “saves” in the emulator’s folder.
These are the only things I know of that can cause saving issues.

the thing with VBA not playing MOTHER3 correctly at normal speed: I’ve once tested out, worked perfectly as far as I remember.

  196. hawkeye2777 said 16 years ago:

Try reformatting your SD card Mato. Like others have said, it needs to be FAT/FAT16. If that doesn’t work, your SD card may be the problem.

For Tantric’s version of VBA (VBAGX 1.0.1), sound is really bad. It has ‘crackle’ or ‘static’ noises throughout. Otherwise, [the menu-patched] Mother 3 runs fine. Battle is the only slightly laggy part. For the most part; sound is the only issue.

There is another [older] build by emukidid (called VBA 1.7.2 20080530 build). I used that in the past, and I don’t remember any other sound issues except for battle. It slowed down at times, but still ran pretty smoothly. The one thing that this build lacks, savestates.

So Mother 3 runs fine for the most part on the Wii VBA ports. Battle is the only glitchy part, as you can’t time your attacks. Otherwise, I encountered no other weird bugs playing through the menu-patch (up to Chapter 4).

Then he mentions it kind of sounds like a cult, and then everyone starts making the “Cult Of Mato” without him. πŸ˜›

If you think about it, the whole thing is pretty funny.

Now, before you know it, Mato’s cult members are going pick up on the fact that he wasn’t nothing to do with babies and will begin murdering and cannibalizing them in his name, writing his name in blood on the houses where they find the babies, and quoting only Mother 3 bug-testing in-jokes. πŸ˜›

The Cult Of Mato is so powerful that he doesn’t even have to say anything or acknowledge it. The Cult Of Mato is such an effective cult, that is runs completly without him. haha.

Mato, I have an Elink flash cart with the Mother 3 ROM. When I boot it up on a Gamecube GBA Player, the blue Nintendo logo at the opening of the game is kinda garbled up. This doesn’t happen on when I play the ROM on an actual GBA. This is a really minor thing I’ve noticed and I’m not sure what causes it. It happens both with a fresh Japanese ROM and with the Menu Patched ROM. I’m not sure if there’s anything you can do about this or if you would even want to. In any case its really not a big deal at all. The game is still fully playable and shows no other hiccups.

I don’t know how long it’s been, a year and a half I think (since Mother3.org), I’ve been using this translation as my crutch. Honestly I use RPGs and games to live what I can’t.

In my opinion I think this translation is a great gift to the world. A gift to English speaking citizens and as a stepping stone for translation into other languages. If if wasn’t for all those involved a great game may have swept past us. In the way I get you can say a lot of people passed up Xenogears at first.

Not to get too far off topic, though.. when playing RPG’s, such as Earthbond & Mother 3, one can get so sucked into it that they temporarily forget about their worries and such, right? These games are such immersive worlds, that it makes such a task easy.. and extremely fun. And the awesome dialogue of these games makes up at LEAST 50% of what they are, at least to me. So yes, good luck to you, and good luck to the team. They are 10 lbs of awesome in a 5 lb bag.

Yes, I’ve played all the way through the menu patch on the PSP using VBA 0.9. The only probably I ever had was sometimes the sound and video would get slightly out of sync, you you just had to press home and open the menu and close it immediately and it would resync. I think that was an emulator issue though, not the rom.

  307. Nenacu said 16 years ago:

Mato, Jeff, Rest of the crew (I dunno your names, sorry!) I’d like to thank you all for your hard work. I know its probably hard to enjoy the testing when you’ve played the game through so very many times, but I wish you all the best. A year ago, I though that I would never be able to play this game, then I heard about your effort. I’ve been watching this closely, checking in several times a month for updates, and I was never disappointed. So, should the very unlikely event that I ever meet one or more of you in the flesh, I would shake your hands and offer several rounds at the local bar. I will thank you all again once this is finished, but I won’t be returning to the site until the testing has been finished. Thank you all one more time.

  308. Bubbleman said 16 years ago:

Mato, I once played through MOTHER3 without patches on gpSP (PSP GBA Emulator).

There’s only one issue, which I’d consider it to be important.

When in battle or in some events, if you set the PSP to ‘sleep mode’ (Not the GBA game). You know, when you slide the power button fast instead of turning the system off. If done in battle (Like in a certain multiple boss fight in chapter 8), it crashes the game with a wall of endless text.

As a solution, I’d save state the game whenever I would take a break instead of doing that.

First time poster, long time reader πŸ˜›

First of all, gotta second (or whatever its at) the idea that, the Wii problem you have is probably a Fat problem. I ran into that with a guy my fiance works with. I did the twilight hack and all that with his Wii so he could play Yoshi’s Island and he couldn’t save. His SD card has “issues” with the read only tab, but nothing fixed it. Turned out to be that he had it formatted in FAT32. Everything has worked fine since. This is how I plan on playing the game though. I have the GBA version but, since I sat there and played the other Earthbounds with my fiance she wants to see whats going on in Mother 3. I’d rather not have her head over my shoulder the entire time.

I’ve been following this for a while. I don’t play videogames very often anymore, I really have to focus on college and getting into grad school, but this is really important to me. With testing beginning it’s finally setting it. I’ll actually be able to play the followup to a game that was so important to me when I was younger. And I really think Earthbound influenced my youth. I’m studying towards clinical psychology, and I’ve noticed, the time in which I played Earthbound was an incredibly important time in my development, and it influenced a lot. The fact that a sequel to that game is being released in a way that I can play it is finally setting in.

I’m really looking forward to your work. Thanks a lot for bringing the next installment out of this important part of my childhood, a game my grandma first rented for me at the local video store (and to think, I had to choose between this and “star ocean” or something.) I just hope I can approach this game with the sense of childhood wonder I had back in the 90s.

Thank you Tomato. This year is going to be a good year. I know it sounds kinda ridiculous, but I don’t think you know how important this is to me, and I assume other people who grew up with this game in the 90s. Earthbound just had a strange ability to provoke emotion that nothing else has had.
