Testing is Afoot

16 years ago by Mato

Testing began on Sunday, and so far, no major issues have been found at all. Excellent news.

In fact, so far, there’ve been fewer bugs than I was expecting. Only three minor things, one of which was because a fix I made in August got reverted somewhere along the line. It’s now fixed again. The other two are also pretty minor and can be seen below.

These should only take me a few hours to fix. An explanation about them is here for the curious.

Testing and polishing continues to continue, but from the sound of it, things are going awesomely ๐Ÿ™‚

Here’s a question, which maybe you’ve answered already, but I’m here all the time anyway so it seems unlikely- ANYWAY,

Once you release the patch and mass quantities of people are playing and a couple of bugs are found, are you going to fix those and rerelease another patch version with the fix? Or will it be “this glitch has been found, here’s how you can avoid doing it”? I wouldn’t expect you to have to be married to this thing once you release it, but do you think there’s a chance a serious game-breaking bug could still be in there after testing?

Jay: You can’t put percentages on stuff like this.

Doc: That’s because people understimate how crazy we are, especially me ๐Ÿ˜›

A fan: Actually it’s probably because I already did a playthrough before and we tested each of our individual hacks pretty well as we went along.

Mr. Nosy: Ever since the blog started, I’ve tried to have a progress update at least twice a week so the project won’t stall.

apteryx: Yes, it’s very likely to happen. Newer patch versions aren’t uncommon in the ROM translation scene at all. Bahamut Lagoon had 2 bugfix versions as I recall. But obviously we want the first version to be as playable and good as possible, since only a small percentage of people will actually come back to get new versions of the patch.

    ——–

Anyway, I think I found out how to make the sleep mode bug happen, you use sleep mode once, leave, go to a main menu, leave, and try sleep mode again.

The problem though is that the no$gba debugger doesn’t emulate the sleep mode right, so I can’t leave sleep mode to find out what the problem is, heh. I’ll use voodoo.

    ——-

Alright, Jeff gave me a fix to make no$gba work with sleep mode. The problem seems to be that the programmers only intended for 40 letters max to be used here. There are three ways to fix this

    1. shorten the text
    2. do an entirely new sprite welding routine
    3. do prewelding

I’m leaning toward 3, hopefully we can use Jeff’s prewelding hack for the credits. I don’t like option 1 because I’d have to break Nintendo’s official lot check requirement, which I’ve been abiding by all this time to be even extra professional. And translations into other languages will have even harder time fitting text under 40 letters I bet. Option 2… might as well buy me a coffin.

  126. Zeldarocks said 16 years ago:

by prewelding, you mean sorta welding the sleep mode text to make it unmodifiable and such? Dunno how to explain it…

  127. DKjunior said 16 years ago:

just weld it up and save the coffin for later… how do you know lot check guidelines!? =D

oh yeah, you’ve done official games before so you must have the SDK. cool.

    definitely skip the coffin route

  129. Arashi said 16 years ago:

Sprite Text welding is that bad?

I greatly underestimated your psychopathic devotion to perfection

  130. bob said 16 years ago:

Is it necessary to do the whole sleep mode thing? We will be playing the game on a computer so sleep mode wouldn’t be needed.

  131. Carl said 16 years ago:

    What happened to:

“Vagn: Why is it people want to cheat every time I post a bug? If we had cheated every step of the way, the thing would look like an inside-out creepy monster man and act just as bad.

Besides, whoโ€™s to say prewelded text there wouldnโ€™t fall victim in some cases? Better to make a real fix.”

    ?

  132. Mato said 16 years ago:

His idea was to go straight for a cheap method without understanding the underlying cause. For all we knew, the bug could still have affected prewelded tiles, leaving us with the same problem. Now that we know the cause, we can choose from several proper choices.

  133. Carl said 16 years ago:

    bob:

Not everyone will be playing the game on a computer. I’m planning to use a flash cart to play on my actual MOTHER 3 GBA Micro, and I know just from reading the comments on this very blog that a fair number of fans have bought flash carts just to play this translation.

  135. Zeldarocks said 16 years ago:

Does this mean that the translation will be postponed significantly?

Also, I just thought of something, instead of trying to fix the sleep mode message, why not have a disclaimer at the beginning of the game saying that the sleep mode text is messed up, and telling the user how to access sleep mode?

..anyway. Are you aware the debug menu is a tad screwed with the menu patch?

Going to certain chapters crashes the game, so does going to the key items menu and scrolling “down” if you use the debug menu to go to certain chapter.

Also going to a chapter via debug menu makes Kumatora’s name crazy glitchiness on the right side of the screen.

….<_< You probably already know all this.

  144. SAM-E-BOI said 16 years ago:

Do savestates ever interfere with the sprite text or other stuff? I ask this because with certain games when I load a savestate the screen is a bunch of gobbledygook. I didn’t know if this was being tested or not.

  145. Mato said 16 years ago:

It’s not recommended you use old savestates with the translation. Instead, you’ll want to take the actual save file (not the savestate), run it through the name convertor we’ll upload, and then use that with the translation.

Thank you for the reply, but I was referring more to the savestates created from a patched version of the rom, as I couldn’t take reading only japanese long enough to form a savefile.

  148. Mato said 16 years ago:

By “patched version of the rom”, do you mean a rom with the menu patch? If so, then what I said above still holds.

If you’re talking about whether or not savestates work with the real translation, then yes. I make and use like 50 bazillion new savestates a day personally.

    Handsome Hobo:

The FAQ actually says, in reference to which name (MOTHER 3 or EARTHBOUND 2) will be used, that “it hasn’t been decided yet.”

    Pitch:

I’m sure Tomato will chime in with more details, but I understand that he’s previously done translation work for games on Nintendo consoles, and is referring to their rules about the way controller buttons and other such things must be referenced in the in-game text. As I recall, it has to say, for example, “press the A *button*,” and not just “press A.” I presume that’s why he’s reticent to shorten the sleep-mode text to say something like “press L & R” instead of “Press the L and R buttons” (or whatever the actual text is).

  172. Mato said 16 years ago:

Yes, each console maker distributes very detailed documents about how things absolutely MUST be done in games, including programming practices, references to hardware/parts of hardware, etc. They’re very very strict about these things, and whenever you submit a game before you release it, it has to pass the rigorous requirements or it’s rejected. Here’s one story involving this lot check stuff. Look around on Google for lot check stuff, it’s pretty interesting and you can see how anal the lot check guys have to be about stuff.

I’ve done a few professional game translations on a couple different systems, including the GBA, so I got some of this info luckily. So I’ve been abiding by the same rules that would apply to official games as much as possible. I doubt many will notice/care, but it’s neat anyway.

Also, one more question. In Earthbound, the game has enemies in various points of the game that give insane amounts of experience and are killed rather easily (like the bugs in the first sanctuary and those pink fluff guys in Belch’s Lair). Does Mother 3 have these types of monsters, and how often?

As far as I’m concerned, this 6502 Debugging stuff is moonspeak, but I know what to look for. The only thing that’s bugging me is adding stuff — I know I can expand data, but there’s a lot of blank space too. I want to add difficulty data, unlockables, retranslate, and add data for the unused items — to name off a few things that boggle me. Everything else I’ve handled easily — correcting typos, improving control, uncensoring graphics, and more junk like that.
