All Text Complete

16 years ago by Mato

Had a busy week, so only one major thing done today. Finally finished checking, formatting, blahblahblah-ing the enemy descriptions. I don’t remember the exact number off the top of my head, but there’s like 150-200 enemies, all with goofy little descriptions. I think in many cases the descriptions sound better in English, much how many of the enemy names are (such as “Cattlesnake” compared to “Cow Snake”). I think people will enjoy reading through them all.

I was also hoping to finish the sound clip hacking tonight, but don’t think I’ll be able to, so I’ll do that tomorrow probably. After that, I plan to tackle the custom control bug in battles, since it’s the easiest of the code-hacking stuff left. I tried doing some code hacking the other day and I forgot how sucky it is. I’d never wish this kind of stuff on anyone, blargh.

Anyway, the enemy descriptions file was the last text file, so it’ll pretty much be all hacking (and testing after) from here on out. I’ve updated the to-do list accordingly. Updates from now on will be small-ish and sparse-ish, since things are winding down.

    Looking pretty good there.

Good luck with the hacking, I hope it isn’t as crazy as the stuff from before…

Those who try to be cool by claiming first are automatically uncool, no matter how hard they try to deny it to themselves. Besides, everyone knows the cool kids always sit in the last row of class. The dweebs sit in the first row.

  9. Mato said 16 years ago:

airpirate545: No, there’ll be at least a month of testing/fixing/further testing. Then there’s still the remaining hacking to do, and I’m out of hacking practice and a few of the remaining things won’t be easy.

  15. Doc said 16 years ago:

Well, I can say this sounds nice and enjoyable, of course, I don’t think that shiegesato or the team who worked on mother 3 lost their humor, It’s just that some of us remembering earhtbound’s humor and implementing it into suggestions made it better, after all, nothing is ever perfect. Always something to improve. In every new building, there is crack. Blah blah blah.

    Yay, perhaps october patch.

Btw Mato, dunno if people have asked and/or if this has been answered, but I see the Japanese clips are still at 70%. Just wondering what they’re saying and if that’ll be a tough issue or easy to handle?

You deserve a good sleep or 2 after this work. :\

Um… not to imply that you don’t know what you’re doing, since the work done here is simply astounding, and I eagerly anticipate finally getting to play this. ๐Ÿ˜€

However… is there any possibility that the Greedier Mouse description might be a little off? It seems to me like it would make more sense if he “…claims he is simply BORROWING everything in the world FROM everyone”. I know no Japanese, it just strikes me that it could possibly be spoken the same way, or something. If it was borrowing, it would be a joke about people who are always saying that they are just “borrowing” a few chips or “borrowing” your pen, which of course is never returned.

I’m probably completely crazy, it just doesn’t seem to make as much sense to me with “lending”. :\

That’s what makes him greedy. The description says that he owns everything, but he’s only letting other people use it, hence “lending”.

woo team, go team, go team! hack ’em away!

Great. Now we have another wave of the occasional nitpicker coming to tell Mato how he doesn’t know what he’s doing, like useless backseat drivers from hell.

  47. TcUp said 16 years ago:

I don’t usually try to read all the text in games, but I always did in Earthbound because of the humor and I will definitely read all the text in this game because I know it’ll have the same great humor and I know how much sweat and tears you have put into this translation. I don’t think any of us can thank you enough for what you are doing! But, THANK YOU!

  50. Acacia Sgt said 16 years ago:

So all the text has been translated, that’s good to hear. Good luck with what’s still left to do.

  51. Dark Hamsterlord said 16 years ago:

What a pleasant surprise to come here and see that all the text is done!

Looking at screenshots, and watching some of the videos you’ve put up, I’ve already fallen in love with this game. I’ve been waiting for this ever since I first beat EarthBound, and got that letter from Pokey, so I’m really excited for this translation!

I’ll definitely talk to every NPC, and fight every enemy (I’m assuming that’s how you get their descriptions) And check random objects, in an attempt to read every bit of text in this game ^-^

  52. rkotm said 16 years ago:

Im out of the loop a bit (didnt read every comment from last post)..but, is Draft 3 not being done by Demi (i remember something or little about the issue) or being done at all anymore?

  53. Old West said 16 years ago:

Strangely, I’m kinda going to miss the old days, especially from before the merge. I used to have dreams about this game (as others have, apparently) and it was just so, I don’t know, mysterious and impenetrable, probably because of the language barrier. Seeing it in English almost removes that “legendary” aspect and makes it just another sequel. Then again, this is Mother, so it’s not just another sequel.

Then again x2, at least it means you and the team won’t have to torment yourself over finalizing and perfecting this project after it’s over. Good luck from here on out, and as always, we are immensely grateful for your, Jeffman’s, and everybody else’s work.

    But I’m only IIHANATSU.”

…Of course, that’s still better than my translation, which wouldn’t even exist, since I don’t know Japanese. I’d probably be forced to resorting to making everything up as I went along. Then again, it did work for Samurai Pizza Cats… ^_^

So after you finish those sound clips & control codes, you just have to deal with some morphing and beat Block 0? Yay!

I wonder if I can even separate those Japanese phrases into individual words? God knows, I need the practice. But I don’t recognize several parts of that description. Though I think donyokusa must be the greedier part? And subete no mono is pretty easy to understand. Actually, I can understand most of that sentence until the end, though it helps that I’ve seen the translation. I have seen that use of wa & ga in the same sentence, so that helps, too…

I know go to this website EVERY DAY BECAUSE THATS HOW EXCITED I AM! But there is only one thing I am seriously worried about… That is I hope once the patch is on the ROM that I will still be able to play this on a flash card…. Because I dont even own a computer and I dont think I would enjoy the game as much because of having to play it on a keyboard. ANYWAY! You guys have now got me excited and this is honestly probably one of the things I am most looking forward to for this year!! I mean I already own the Japanese Mother 3, and even though I can only understand a little bit (hey at least im learning the freaking language!) the game is still fun to play and I can only imagine how fun it will be in ENGLISH!!!!!!!!!

Hey great job Mato, although Im kinda offended by the “dweebs in the front, cool kids in the back” remark. (In my classes, its nerds in the front, *ssholes in the back)

But, mainly why Im posting is because of something my friend noticed (who, ironically, hates Earthbound, so im not gonna leave his name or anything for obvious reasons). He started complaining that they were REMAKING Earthbound for the Wii. I wouldnt even think that Nintendo would want to do that, but would you think thats plausible?

Hey. As always, the progress looks amazing. However, I noticed that the third draft has been erased from the To-Do List. If you don’t mind me asking, did Demi become too busy to edit a third Draft?

Either way, I’ve seen the screen shots; I have no doubt that the script is solid, even without the additional draft. As always, I can’t wait to see the final product. You’re all doing a huge service for the Mother/EarthBound community, and we all owe you and your team an amazing amount of gratitude!

  88. Derrick T. said 16 years ago:

  98. llamapalooza said 16 years ago:

Can’t comment on the Japanese side of things, but I know some dialects of English will use “borrow” to mean “lend,” as in “I borrowed him my copy of EarthBound.” In some regions, it sounds totally normal– though I’ve always thought it kind of odd. The usage guide at http://www.wsu.edu/~brians/errors/borrow.html suggests that the more correct/proper/widely-accepted way to say it would be “lending,” and I tend to agree with that. But, hey, it’s not my patch.

  101. Reg teh Yoshi said 16 years ago:

    @myself: Gible, not Gabite.

    :s

  102. 9-Volt 101 said 16 years ago:

About the greedier mouse battle memory description, when you mean “lending” do you mean he claims to lend all things in the world to everyone.

That means he is “giving” stuff to people.

Should it have been , he “borrows” everything in the world from everyone.

That means he is “taking” stuff from people.

So technically Mato is 99.99% done.

  103. Mato said 16 years ago:

Blargh. Stop with the nitpicking which is wrong to begin with.

He thinks he owns everything in the world. Greedy. He thinks he’s lending them to everyone, which is why he’ll take it back whenever he wants (he’ll steal your items). Greedy.

    The verb used is kasu.

Sometimes I regret posting screenshots ๐Ÿ˜

  104. MidnightCeltic said 16 years ago:

lol, I’m not nitpicky, as long as it’s not like “SHINE GET!” or something weird like that. Still So close, yet so very, very far…

On a completely unrelated note, I never noticed the little blurb in NP about the visit to Nintendo. Now I do.

  105. A Fan said 16 years ago:

  107. Googi said 16 years ago:

@Mato: “He thinks he’s lending them to everyone, which is why he’ll take it back whenever he wants (he’ll steal your items).”

Not that I was one to give constructive criticism over the line, but I did sort of question it myself. But seeing you put it so blunt gives it complete sense to me. w00t astounding greediness! ๐Ÿ˜€

9-Volt 101: If it bothers you, go change it yourself. You only need to work on a Mother 3 translation patch for a year or more to change it, right? I mean, because that’s all that matters, right? How you interpret a single enemy description? I’m sure you can do it, now get to work, chop chop.

    So literally 9-Volt 101 is 00.00% done.

  115. Vagn said 16 years ago:

Pobody’s nerfect guys, I bet it’s really discouraging when you spend 90% of your free time on a project only to have some people on the internet pick apart one screen shot. It took me a second to get it to, the mouse greedy since he believes he owns everything so he thinks he is lending everything to everyone else.

Mato I’m sorry some people can be so rude, I hope you know that most of us who follow this site rather fanatically really appreciate the effort you and the translation team are putting in to make this such a great translation.

  119. Jorge said 16 years ago:

I’m so excited and I just can’t hide it. ๐Ÿ˜€

  124. Carl said 16 years ago:

The Greedier Mouse description seemed backwards to me, too, when I first read it. If he’s greedy, wouldn’t he be taking things FROM others, not lending them TO others? I understand it now that Tomato has explained it, but the fact that several other people had the same interpretation ought to suggest that the description is maybe a little awkward. As Llamapalooza said, it wouldn’t be the first time that someone has mixed up “borrowing” with “lending.” This hardly seems like “nitpicking” to me, and I am outright flummoxed that some people take such umbrage at Bo’s utterly innocuous post that they’d describe it as “rude” or presume to apologize on his behalf (which strikes me as very rude in itself).

This blog has a comments section; I assume we’re meant to use it. Why is “this text seems weird to me, wouldn’t such-and-such make more sense?” such a controversial remark?

  125. Duffman247 said 16 years ago:

    lending it to everyone.

  127. Matthew(Someguy) said 16 years ago:

  128. Triangle said 16 years ago:

    Duffman247 : I totaly, Totally agree……..

    Twice already there’s been nitpicking………

But Mato knows to expect silly comments like that, i guess…. and he knows how to deal with it..

  129. Zaratus said 16 years ago:

I’ll just chime in and say I misread it at first. But, I do that surprisingly often at times. It WAS around 3 AM as well, so…

I forget exactly how I initially interpreted it, but it makes perfect sense now that I’m reading it right. He says everything in the world is his, and he’s just loaning it all to people. Hence, his ‘stealing’, isn’t really stealing as he’s just taking back what is already his. In his own mind.

Hmm, gonna drive me nuts now thinking of how I originally read it. Now it completely eludes me. Oh well, not like it matters. =P

  130. some person said 16 years ago:

    go, go, MOTHER rangers!

  131. Googi said 16 years ago:

I dunno what’s making this topic persist. Some of us didn’t get why a greedy mouse would be “lending” his things to everyone, and others did. Either way, Mato stepped in and justified why the description reads so. I highly doubt that this ongoing issue would jeopardize the project this far in, but still. People who are saying “oh I totally didn’t get it at first,” well that’s fine, but people who are explicitly challenging the description, hoping for something more literal, at least the sentence is in English. The team’s judgment led to the translation of the humorous “Cattlesnake” pun over what was originally “Cow Snake” in the Japanese game; I’m pretty sure they know what they’re doing.

  132. Mato said 16 years ago:

What’s funny is that that translation is almost word for word with the Japanese version. So people who couldn’t understand it now wouldn’t have understood Itoi’s version either, if they had known Japanese. I personally think it’s good to have jokes that aren’t spoon-fed.

  133. Chewy said 16 years ago:

Wow, pretty sad that people are making a fuss just because I used *correct English* in that sentence.

I can only imagine how many people would go crazy if it was grammatically incorrect. Lose-lose?

  137. Googi said 16 years ago:

@Mato: Is that really the Google translation of the description? Hehe, this is why all development is taking place internally.

  138. This Man said 16 years ago:

Hey, how ’bout we stop worrying about the mouse quote, AND we stop insulting everyone that talks about it? It’s the insults that fuel this topic.

Throw out the hate, bring in the love, and instead about talking about greed jokes, lets talk about our exitement for M3 so Mato can get back to work so we can play M3 (because if the translation gets delayed because of Mato’s need to respond to all these comments, I’ll explode)!

  139. Carl said 16 years ago:

Reading back over the comments, the only people I see “making a fuss” about the Greedier Mouse things are those who, for some reason, flip out whenever someone questions or criticizes even the tiniest little thing.

Everyone should read over Bo’s original post again. It was a perfectly harmless, innocent question, and he heaped plenty of praise on the translation team’s work (he described it as “simply astounding”) in addition to asking his question. The next thing you know, he’s a “useless backseat drivers from hell,” and a “smart-alec know-it-all.” Where the heck did THAT come from?

  140. This Man said 16 years ago:

I forgot to mention, no one means to piss off Mato, they all just want this fan translaton to be perfect!

  141. Mato said 16 years ago:

    Googi: Yeah, it is.

  142. Poe said 16 years ago:

Please give me more Japanese descriptions so that I may run them through Google Translator and laugh my ass off. “All things in this world that I was all alone and let me dance,” is hilarious. I immediately pictured a very sad mouse, locked in a basement, who only wishes to dance, but some unseen force is preventing him. That poor mouse!

  143. Carl said 16 years ago:

The Babel Fish translation of the Greedier Mouse’s description is even more nonsensical:

The [do] which should be surprised it is it is ill-smelling. This as for any all things the [ji] [bu] is just has done in everyone with as for calling.

Didn’t someone create a program that ran the Mother 3 ROM in an emulator, then translated the text using some Internet auto-translator like Google Translate or Babel Fish?

  144. Skullrama said 16 years ago:

*Snrk* Haha, okay, that made me chuckle. I respect those who keep their sense of humor even in annoying circumstances. …I’m gonna see if I can’t write up a little greedier mouse comic and get Steve to draw it, as a reward.

  145. Bo said 16 years ago:

Just for the record, I wasn’t nitpicking. It simply wasn’t entirely making sense to me. Explained, though, I see what it means. ^^ I do apologize since I wasn’t trying to imply anything about the quality of translation and really do appreciate the work going in, since I did love Earthbound on the SNES. What I was attempting was a curious inquiry due to my initial lack of understanding.

Heh. Anyway, I’ll simply go back to enjoying any further updates from the shadows and eagerly anticipating full release when it eventually comes. =)

  146. Millhouse said 16 years ago:

  148. Tim333 said 16 years ago:

I didn’t get the mouse description either until I saw it explained; I think for a lot of people the connection is hard to make because we perceive “lending = generous” or something. I mean… I think… I’m a pretty clever guy ๐Ÿ™

There is a really weird environment here that can turn hostile awfully fast. If you’re going to post screenshots, and somebody sees something confusing that they perceive as an issue, I can’t fathom how it’s “rude,” “over the line,” or even “silly” to bring it up. What is rude is apologizing for or shouting down people who were just trying to be helpful. I think everybody here has the greatest confidence in the accuracy of the translation, it just seemed unclear. Probably a fair amount of people aren’t going to get that joke as it’s put… if that’s fine with you, then, well, fine. It’s your project, after all. It just seemed worth bringing up. I say this because if I’d gotten here first, I would have.

I wouldn’t have typed this much text just about this line – the line doesn’t bother me much. What bothers me is that no one can raise the slightest criticism here without encountering a “sigh… why must I suffer such lameness” attitude from the team and a “how dare you question Mato” attitude from everybody else.

I’m really hesitant to post this – I’m not trying to make trouble. I’m amazed by this project, and Tomato’s incredible dedication to it, and this post is great news. Lots of respect for you guys here, really. I just don’t get some of the attitudes here.

  149. Tim333 said 16 years ago:

Ugh, and even though I went over that again before posting it, right after it’s gone it looks more confrontational than I meant. It’s hard to get tone on the Internet.

I didn’t really mean to say the environment around here is weird. Mostly it’s friendly and nice. I just wanted to say that one aspect felt weird, that’s all.

I don’t even understand why Nintendo isn’t interested in localizing “Mother 3.” They did “Mother” at a time when there was just about no anticipation for it overseas. Then they did “EarthBound” which I suppose didn’t garner enough sales at its time. But over the years “EarthBound” achieved cult status, and the fact that Nintendo won’t localize “Mother 3” is only building onto the anticipation for its release in English.

I honestly don’t think that this fan translation could hurt the sales of an official translation. I suppose gaming companies can’t base their projects solely on what, based on the status of a prequel, will ‘probably’ be successful, but it’s been well over ten years since “EarthBound” and gamers are more open to its unique take on the RPG genre. As a gaming company, Nintendo has to have some degree of awareness of the demand for this game.

Oh well, Mato and company will be there first, and free of charge at that.

I beg to differ. EB yes because it had poor graphics (only flaw) But M3 would have sold a LOT why? Because LUCAS IS IN BRAWL! They could have made big $ with roys game but that was a mistake of theirs not to bring it. It would be even dummer of them to not bring M3s game over because Lucas is from an existing series in the US. Fire Emblem wasnt ever in the us before.

“Guys like that are a dime a dozen in Nintendo of Japan. Who programmed this, by the way?”
“I’ll have to look it up. Okay, here we are. Any of these names familiar to you?”
    “Oh god.”
    “What? Is that bad?”
“It’s bad. Very bad. Oh no, oh no…. I’ve got to get out of here while I’m still sane!”

Actually it would have sold poorly. It would have came out in late 2006, right around the time that Nintendo was releasing the Wii and Zelda Twilight Princess. If they could have made a buck off of it that was worth their time they would have, companies don’t just pass up on opportunities to make money.

With “Mother 3” not officially localized by 2008, and the fact that the Game Boy Advance is pretty much over, it doesn’t completely call its English release out of question though. It clearly doesn’t look likely, but it has happened that Nintendo reissues games updated for more recent systems. For example, the early Ace Attorney games were originally Japan-only GBA games, but 4-5 years after their releases, were ported to the DS, even making use of some of the DS’s exclusive features.

In the confusion, the Greedier Mouse stole the Junk folder!

I wouldn’t look inside the Junk folder, anyways. You might find the Box Ghost. You know, the guy who thinks he’s scary.

Really, all that argument over the Greedier Mouse’s description? Then I wouldn’t like to know how it would have been if it was the Greedy Mouse’s. Although, the description would probably not have been as confusing as it’s stronger version.

Ace Attourney is not an example of Nintendo rereleasing an older game, because Capcom rereleased it, not Nintendo.
