Intro Screens + More
After all of the hard work we’ve been doing, and with the impending doom of the main dialogue bug, I decided to tackle and take down one of the miscellaneous items on the to-do list:
Insert some sort of intro screen/disclaimer screen thing.
In addition to inserting an intro screen of our own, we also changed the health warning screen into English. This was a pretty straight-forward hack, and didn’t require any actual assembly code hacking, aside from the fact that we moved the blinking “Press a button” text up a few notches.
Before
After
Back to our new intro screen now. We inserted it between the health screen and the Gameboy Player logo. Check it out after the break, along with some other details.
Thanks to Jonk for making the graphic. This is the spiffy screen that shows up after the health warning now. It even fades to and from white all fancy-like, as with the other screens. We wanted to add this screen as sort of a disclaimer for anybody who plays the patch. We want to make it crystal clear that this translation project will shut down immediately if Nintendo announces anything to do with releasing MOTHER 3, and we figured this would be a great way to help get that message across. There’s even a 2-second delay on this screen when you first play it, but you don’t have to wait every time; I’ll explain that in a bit.
The hacking for this took quite a few headaches because it’s the first time we’ve ever had to deal with what’s called a VBlank Interrupt. If you understand this, it’s a GBA instruction that basically pauses the CPU process until the LCD screen has drawn the next frame. It happens once per frame, which would be 60 times every second. The reason we needed to use this was so we could time certain delays properly; other methods would involve wasting tons of CPU cycles and battery power. So I enlisted Exophase’s help — he wrote a GBA emulator for the PSP, and I figured he would be able to help me the best — and soon enough I had that up and running. Thanks, Exophase! π
I keep mentioning this 2-second delay, so now I’ll try to explain it. Yes, the very first time you play the patched game, when there are no save files present, you will have to wait for at least two seconds on the disclaimer screen. I don’t want anybody skipping over it so quickly anyways, 1) because it’s beautiful, and 2) because the message needs to get across. However, I know how much of a pain it can be to wait for crappy intro hacks added by other release groups that make you sit there for 30 seconds while having to listen to some dumb tune. So that’s why the 2-second delay is conditional. As I mentioned before, you only HAVE to wait for 2 seconds if there are no save files present. That means as soon as you save your game in either file slot you can skip past the intro screen by pressing A and without having to wait for the 2 seconds. Cool, eh?
Onto some other hacking news. First of all, we’ve been looking into various save issues and compatibility issues pertaining to some flash carts. We can even cross this off the list:
Possibly add in whatever hacks are needed to make the game work properly on emulators and real systems. For some reason, some emus and flash cards have trouble with MOTHER 3, but I think sblur found a fix or something. I forget.
Good news: we’ve found ways to fix them, and we’re planning to release a user-friendly mega-helpful tools/resources/troubleshooting guide, with the help of a super-powerful flash cart guy, when the patch is out on how to fix these things. The reason we can’t include the fixes in the translation patch is because the problems are different for each flash cart, and it would be better to have separate, more specific instructions on how to deal with them. The guide will also cover any other potential issues to do with patching the game and whatnot. It’ll be especially useful for non-savvy people.
Going on to other things now, Tomato managed to squash a big battle bug that caused special text boxes in end-game battles to not work right. Like he mentioned in previous updates though, I can’t show you any screenshots of that because of spoilers. The voice things are also almost done. We’re just waiting for some retakes and we’ll be able to cross it off the list soon, although Tomato wants to try and increase the volume too because they sound quite softly in-game. A couple other annoying outstanding bugs have been fixed too.
Lastly, and I think it’s been mentioned a couple times already, we’re planning on making this project friendly to future translations into new languages. That is, if someone wants to take our patch and use it for a Spanish or French translation or something, we’ll eventually be releasing a set of tools and documentation some time after this is done to let them do so. The more people who get to experience this game, the better. Of course, if you still want to play the Japanese version, you can always buy it from here.
We also found a way to activate some more dummied-out stuff that’s compatible with our translation by using a cheat code, so we might set that free if it doesn’t end up being too buggy. It’s not for sure yet though.
Phew, that was a lot of typing. Random screenshot time!
(rofl you actually posted it, this should be interesting π )
Wonderful job. The disclaimer is indeed pretty.
Woo hoo! This is cool! It looks very professional.
Cool. More good news.
Excellent! Now I can buy a flash cart with no worries! Keep the good news rolling, guys. Almost there!
You actually put in the effort to let people avoid waiting TWO SECONDS every time they start the game up? Your attention to detail is impressive, as always.
“your’e”
The first typo I’ve witnessed. FOR SHAME.
…good to see this out of the way, though. God, you guys just KEEP CHUGGING.
I definitely like the idea, and if Nintendo does release the game, I will definitely buy it, and remove the patch.
HINT HINT, NINTENDO π
Woah!! you guys have done an amazing job on this translation project kudos to all of you who have spent your time and money creating this for the fans of earthbound.
*first-time poster*
Y’all are doing just a bang-up job on this. I really can’t believe how quick things are unfolding; it’ll be here before we know it. π Good thinking on setting up other languages, too. More people = more publicity = more love for MOTHER 3.
Indeed. Keep it up, guys. π
Noooo! My save files!!! At least you healed that poor boulder for some reason.
Seriously, good job guys! Now get cracking on that retake, people are going to start chomping at the bit once all the hacking is done! π
Beautiful π
Although that last screenshot got me a bit nervous,
I feel like we’re very very very very close to having this translation patch
Mato: -well here it is anyways- I was on vacation, in a country where i have lots of relatives.. we were going to a beach house for the weekend, and on the drive there, my little cousin who was sitting beside me in the car, told me about browsing the internet on his cellphone…
so this blog update was viewed by a fan, while on the road to a beach.
Four things left.
Amazing.
Is a flash kart a thing that lets the files be copied onto and actual GBA cartridge? That would be neat.
what would you do to us if we DIDN’T delete the patch if NoA releases it?
I like it. It looks nice!
Arashi: We’ll make your computer turn into vomit.
LMAO love the last screen shot about save corruption!
GJ at this speed you might make it before the EU Release of SSBB^——————————–^^^^^^^^^————–^^^
sorry.. not *this* blog up date.. it was an update from a week ago or so,
and about the 2-second thing, i really like how it only applies to the first time, but i feel that it should be 5 seconds long though.. just for good measure…
also maybe something about not having to pay money for the patch? i donno, just my 2 cents
again,
Thanks very much for doing this,
Forgive me for my horrible handwriting.
http://i32.tinypic.com/105r1wh.png
2 seconds?
2 SECONDS!?!?!?
That’s it, screw this whole thing! I’ve waited this long for it already, but you can’t expect me to wait 2 seconds longer! This is madness!
OMG…IM gonna explode…you dont understand how excited I am!
Oh yeah, also forgot to mention I fixed a bug with map names in the file menus. I fixed it and upped the max # of letters for each map name to 50 letters, which is more than can even fit in the screen space there heh.
jak1437: no, a flash cart just lets you play the game on actual hardware, such as a GBA, DS, etc. As far as I know, there is no way to replace/add to what is already on a GBA cartridge.
Anyway, looks good so far. Keep it up guys
@Wasp: Obligatory Sparta.
Also, would Mato hate me if I bought a Nintendo released version AND kept his patch?
oh wow
you guys are just too amazing
2 misc done already?
and the voices are almost done too?
machines machines machines are taking over!
run for your lives!
haha greatgreatgreat work
thanks so much
Mato said 21 minutes ago:
Arashi: Weβll make your computer turn into vomit.
You can do that? Wow, you’re awesome. Anyway, point taken, I’ll save up, just in case.
The intro disclaimer thingy is “beautiful”! It only seems appropriate, necessary, and just.
I just have one fear, and it’s an evil flaw. I If NoA says a rumor about releasing M3, it will probably cause this project to shut down. Knowing M3’s history, their project might get canned again, and by then, lots of time will have passed…and people will have been Mother-less…at least until this is started up again. If you think I’m an idiot for saying this, sue me (not, really, just ignore it).
Otherwise, *ahem* ALMOST THERE GUYS, WOOT!!!
Heh, I hope if nintendo releases an official translation that you will be there to fix anything they may mess up. After all, you did so much to make this game better. I have to wonder if nintendo would treat it with the same respect.
All the best,
– Deez
Well, If I were in Mato’s shoes, I’d only shut it down if I had some solid proof they would release it, without any doubts. Obviously,I’m NOT Mato so He can do what he wants
Small example of what I mean http://mother3.fobby.net/wp-content/uploads/2008/03/wineghost.png that would more than likely be changed to “fruit juice”. I really hope you would make a improvement patch if such a thing occurs.
You guys most likely addressed it by now, but Mapson seems to be saying “your’e”, not “you’re”.
…Sorry. I probably didn’t need to bring that up. I’m just obsessive-compulsive about grammar errors.
That’s a pretty swank splash screen. It feels like this project suddenly jumped from being a long way off to being really close. Here’s hoping you guys don’t run into anymore giant headaches like that menu system.
Man… you guys are like unstoppable juggernauts now.
yea, the “your’e” contraction, I’m sure you guys caught that though.
Aweosme stuff though, a splash screen is good, and I’m really glad you guys went the extra mile to make it skippable.
Heh okay I’ll give in — I gave that pic to Jeff last night as kind of a joke, to see how people would react to the typo. I didn’t think he’d actually post it π Pretty impressed by people’s reactions though π
I prefer buying games for the market’s sake, so I’ll gladly remove the patch on announcement. I hope Nintendo doesn’t make such an announcement after the patch is completed, though. I occasionally buy games twice (often on VC and the original console), but unless I haven’t beaten the game, yet, I will probably buy an official translation (although I should buy what I have roms of, anyway, for ownership’s sake.)
That scenario I mentioned will most likely not happen, though, assuming Reggie realizes that Mother 3 won’t be much of a moneymaker if the fan translation comes out first.
@Deez: yea, hacking some text in an already English rom isn’t as difficult as all the actual coding these guys are doing (and so well!)
I’m not so sure they would censor wine though. Game ratings have gotten more leniant since Earthbound was released. Plus the ESRB made that new E10+ rating for small discrepancies like that.
NEW RECORD!
Woah, you guys need to lay off the Skip Sandwhiches. I can hardly keep up with these updates! So Mother 3 will work on a flash cart now, right? Does it work on any flash cart, or only a select few? I wanna know for sure before I get one.
And the disclaimer screen: beautiful. No, georgous. No, a word that doesn’t exist that explains beauty times 1,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000. I’d actuallly sit there and stare at it for 30 seconds like most games do before you have a save file. OK, I need to stop talking.
I wasn’t here for a few days, then I come back and all this progress is made.
It feels like I went forward in time o.o
Prettiest disclaimer ever! ohmanohmansoclose–!
Not only an uberhacker but also a great designer. Wonder what’s going to be your next project. President? Keep up your fantastic work!
I’m glad I bought a EZ 3-In-1 way back when to accompany my R4, because it has a NOR mode that doesn’t rely on RAM to run the game and is actually flashed in to the cartridge itself, acting like a real cartridge that can run any save type (The PSRAM can only handle a certain size and savetype) and even be put in to a GBA and run. It even runs F-Zero Climax at full speed with no crashes, unlike every other memory card based flashcart out there (Last I knew, none but EZ could run it correctly). It takes a few seconds to flash it to the NOR however, but it’s amazing in the end.
Anyways, I say this because, I have strong beliefs that this will run perfect or near-perfect on it for being the closest to an actual cart.
Long time follower of the project with a quick question.
Are you able to play Flash Carts on the Gameboy Advance Player for the Gamecube? Just wondering if I’ll be able to play this on my T.V… I haven’t messed around with Flash Carts before, but this is as good of an occasion as any. I suppose anyone who knows could answer me, that would rock. =)
Thanks in advance.
What did everybody else do during the sites downtime? I ate the neighbor’s flowers.
You’re awesome. You guys make this seem way too easy.
“unexplained pregantcy” lol
(I’m talking about Mitch’s beautiful art)
Bribo Baggins: Yes, I test my stuff on my GB Player a lot. Remember this ancient video?
I’m pretty sure what they mean with the flash cart problems is related to save games.
I remember that in the earliest flash carts for GBA there was issues with the different save formats (EEPROM, SRAM), and some needed to be patched to convert it to the format your card would use.
Also, generally speaking a game that was 128mb would use 128k save file, but there was a few games that didn’t follow that convention (Super Mario Advance 4 : Super Mario 3 for example), and that required yet another patch to fix it. And then again, it didn’t fix it 100%.
For those that are lucky enough to have the latest GBA Flash carts, like those used for the NDS slot 2 solutions (M3 Perfect, M3 Lite) should not have any troubles due to a different system of handling save files.
Are you also going to provide a Health and Safety Precautions booklet?
;]
sethdonut: Nah they need an instructional video hosted by Mr. Saturn
Heh we should put one up for download with the patch just ’cause π
Mato,
Personally, which flash cart/emulator setup would you recommend for playing the game on a television the way you have in the youtube video?
Astounding!
Seriously, though. You guys are awesome.
I may name all my characters “Mato”, “Jeffman”, or some combination/variation of the two on my first playthrough.
In fact… I think I will.
I just checked my GBA…..there wasn’t any “any” button! How will we be able to get past the load screen?!!
You make grown men and women cry
Oh you.
Tarik: I wouldn’t ask me, because yesterday I got corrupted saves twice. I think it’s because I was stupid and altered the ROM while it was flashing to the cart though. But I don’t know anything about this stuff, so I plead dumb.
Your’e gonna hate me…
So since it says Mother 3 Fan Translation… does that mean that Mother 3 is now the official name, and not Earthbound 2?
Sorry.
wow this is really moving along!
keep up the good work.
Speaking of the GameBoy Player, does Mother 3 rumble at all when played on a GC? It didn’t last time I tried it, but maybe that’s down to my flash cart.
I always thought that’s what the GameBoy Player logo meant, at least for Mario & Luigi.
Wow your patience absolutely amazes me. Most people would have given up or taken shortcuts by now, but you guys keep pluggin’ away. Thank you thank you thank you so much for all of your efforts. I can’t wait for release day! π
Cool, another update yet again.
And if Exophase wrote a new emu, it probably would work on the PSP.
Oh and Mato, this is something that might interest you:
My cousin Lyn envies you so much ’cause you have like every piece of EB stuff.
We both can’t wait for the patch!!

I seriously considered doing that too, but all my neighbors have high security. Instead, I catted with my pals on making BB gun bullet bombs to throw at houses

Fantastic!
There’s so much being done lately, I can’t keep up. I’m so amazed you guys are moving so fast!
It must be fun to tick off those things on the To-Do list, it’d make me feel all warm and fuzzy inside >_<
WOW WOW WOW this project is looking good. Can’t wait until that last major hack is done, and this project can go to full-on translation/testing mode.
ooh! it looks really nice, nintendo-made quality even!
Yeah, I asked about the flash cart in the last update, because I’m extremely unknowledgable about that sort of stuff. So if possible I’d love for you to link the best flash cart that is most compatable with your patch in the tutorial section.
I imagine myself to still be checking in on this place even when the patch is good n done. ill be having fobby withdrawal, thats for sure. its become more than just a patch for a game, its an inspiration . ive grown very accustom to this place. thanks for everything guys, your doing a lot more for people than your probably aware of!
JESUS CHRIST (Scuse my language) ITS ALMOST DONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*EXPLODES*
@Aron: Don’t explode now! You won’t have a chance to play M3!
People, you must remember, ANYTHING could happen at any moment that’ll push this hack back, so try not to get too hyped.
…although I have little room to speak, I’m hyped as well. π
I’m no super-hacker, but I’m leaning toward a summer release. June preferably. π
*first-time poster*
I’m a noob, Mato, I don’t exactly get what’s the big problem with leaving the patch on if nintendo releases an official translation.
What he was saying is that if there was a readily available patch released on the internet at the time nintendo announces a translation, most people would be all like,”Eff that, I’ll take the patch.” So to ensure that the game gets localized, you should probably delete it and buy the actual copy.
EmpoleMew: A whole zettahelen? O_O
Coolioman: The idea is that, if they release it, we should actually buy it π
But it’s not like no patch would make things harder for pirates. They’d just pirate the officially localized version, instead.
We don’t want to do that with Mother 3 because we want them to make more of the Mother series, and they probably won’t do that if they don’t sell enough games.
Mitch: Ghaaa! Not scurvey! I don’t even have any lemons right now!
It’s a good day when the team announces that they have come so far with the regular hacks that they are now working on the miscellaneous, nonessential stuff. I am proud to be a citizen of the one country where such a fabulous, crabulous project could be accomplished.
TAKE THAT, CHINA!!!
Has anyone noticed that the faster the updates come, the faster the posts from the fans come as well?
well, yeah, people get hyped when it happens and want to express their excitement
Super cool update! I must say I wish video game developers took your 2 second delay that can be skipped once there is a save file present idea. I really like it!!!
i want your babies (imma girl i’m allowed)
Maybe this game will be out by my birthday next month (June 25th). That’d be very exciting, since I’ve been diligently waiting for this game since 1995.
The New screen looks so Awesome. I’m sure you guys get this question a lot but are you guys gonna make a new Intro Screen? Like “Earthbound 2” instead of the normal “Mother 3”?
Mato,if mother3 did come to us,and if i got it. would it be cool if i keep the patch on the flash card,or will my computer screen still shoot out vomit? cause i still would like to have the patch just for the patch itself.
Great work guys, it’s almost there!
Also, now that this is nearing the end, could you answer the question again about Mother 1+2? If the answer has changed that is π
Thanks a lot guys, your work is greatly appreciated.
The bee’s knees. You people are the
bee’s
friggn’
knees.
A HUGE MILESTONE SKIPPED!!!! AND MY FLASH CART BECOMEs EVEN MORE AMAZING!!!!!! YOU ARE ANGELS!!!! EVERYONE ON THE TEAM!!!!
Jeffrey: Not to speak for them, but they get this question several times every update. It’s going to stay as Mother 3 for various reasons, a) the logo appears in various forms throughout the game, sometimes animated, and would be a pain to try and alter, and b) they just feel like it.
I’ve just done some number-crunching, and I estimate the game will be released in about 3 to 5 months, or anywhere from August to October. However, this is being very conservative, so it could be much earlier. And I don’t mean to be a pessimist, but it could be much later as well. π
I think there’s about…
-Two to four weeks left of hacking
-Two to three months of script editing
-About a month of testing and polishing
On a side note, I just got my flash cart, and finally got it working! Yayzies! π
Wow, this is looking amazing, I’m so wanting to play this!!
By the way, I’d like to see this translated into Spanish, so I can recommend it to friends who aren’t fluent with English.
What do you mean exactly with “friendly to future translations into new languages”? Because I think I may be able to translate stuff from English to Spanish, but if it involves carzy hacking, I doubt I could handle it.
(Keep going!)
Wow, From the way things are going, I wouldn’t be suprised to be playing this in august! Of course, I may just be gettig my hopes up.
On an unrelated note, did you notice you are the second thing that comes up when you search mother 3, right under the wikipedia article? This site sure is getting popular!
Man, I just know that we’ll be so close to getting our grubby mitts on this, all the scripts written and bugs ironed out, and then Nintendo will announce they’re releasing it in English and we’ll have to wait all over again! Not to mention negating all of our beloved translators’ headaches, frustrations and victories.
Let’s just hope that happens AFTER the translation comes out. I’d still buy a copy, honest π
it’s unfair NoA does this to us. They could get a translation done in 2 weeks. Also, even if they spent $2,000,000 on translating and shipping, etc, Probably over 1,000,000 people would buy it, judging by starmen. net . If each copy costs $20, they’d make a profit of $18,000,00! How can they not see such a huge opportunity?
i meant $18, 000, 000
Amon: This site is also displayed in Wikipedia’s list of “Popular incomplete fan translations.” http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fan_translation_of_video_games
And I made a vow to play Mother 1 and Mother 2 before going on to 3. If this comes out sooner than expected, I’m going to explode with temptation.
STOP BEING SO PRODUCTIVE!!! XD
Hey, Mato or Jeff, what do you mean by “dummied out stuff”
I’m going to translate this game to Portuguese (not Brazilian).
Hope you fellas are okay with that π
Nice work, the disclaimer screen is pretty nifty.
Interesting about the wiki page there. Could someone change the date next to Bahamut Lagoon though? That came out in 2002, not 2001.
Mato: Done.
umm….so….what if nintendo steals your patch secretly and makes the american game with ur warning screen, u know revised? that would be kinda neat actually!
Wow, can’t believe that the project has progressed this far since the one-year mark. The whole project has gone from “finally I can understand stuff” to “Wow! this really does look like a professional release!”
Looking at the to-do list now makes me want to shed tears of joy. This whole thing is looking so great! ^-^ Keep it up! *throws confetti*
Been tinkering with the main script stuff. I got it to start to do what I want, that is, it uses only 2 glyph buffers — the game only has 40 and its when we go over that that things die. So I got it using the same two over and over now. Wasn’t too bad getting it to do that. Still some strange stuff — the first row of text works fine, but on the second row it only shows text partially. But progress is good so far.
Nice work guys, very pro looking.
Hey guys…if anyone wants to buy earthbound snes cart and the strategy guide (with the scratch cards still very smelly!) then shoot me an email! I love you.
Heh, knowing Mato and his current burst of energy, final hacking will be done in a week (if not over the weekend), then he’ll be working on the translation draft so that he can pass that off to demi while working out any final polishing hacks…
At least, that’s what I’m hoping for π
I just hope poor Mato doesn’t give out, or the people dubbing Crayon Shin-chan (or whatever else) are going to wonder why random bits of Mother 3 script made it into the dialog…
I bet he’ll go crazy during script drafts with people mentioning minor things like how mole crickets are NOT ‘bugs’, they’re insects π
(All true bugs are in the order Hemiptera. Mole crickets are under Othoptera with all the other grasshoppers, crickets and katydids. But few people except for entomologists care about the distinction. Won’t someone please think of the childr^W entomologists? π )
What? The Japanese, glitchy M3 cart is evolving!
The Japanese, glitchy M3 cart evolved into The Translated, More Awesome English M3 Cart!

good job on your’e hacking Mato and Jeffman and your’e (Jeffman) not so secret secret alter ego Jefflypuff
I’m bummed my searches for “your’e” don’t work on Google π
Pining Tor: How much for the whole Earthbound Catridge and Strategy Guide? I’ve been looking for a while now But really don’t want to pay 100+ bucks for one.
WOW!!! Your’e screenshots are impressive!! Just two questions: Will we hear “ok desu ka?” when we press A on the new intro screen? π Do those 2 seconds have any music?
Prolly the most beautiful fantranslation splash screen ever.
Also, FOUR MOAR LEFT! FOUR MOAR LEFT! UWA-UWA
That’s a marvelous sight π― The text works great on line 1, after that it doesn’t want to behave even though it’s still doing 2 glyphs at a time like the top line. I think I have a theory though.
Actually, here’s a better one. This is all technically one line. I guess maybe the problem creeps in when it hits a manual [BREAK] or something. Will look into it.
Ooh, I think my theory is right, and if so, shouldn’t be too tough to fix. It’d make text work right on all lines.
Would that cross it off the to-do list?
If the theory works of course. Sorry for the double post but my question seemed too vague for my liking.
No, but if things go well (and I think they just might, given that this wasn’t the menu programmer) it could bump it to like 70 or 80%.
Woo-hoo!!
Dummied out stuff anyone? Wut does it mean?!?!?!?!?1111111
Blog: “…this translation project will shut down immediately if Nintendo announces anything to do with releasing MOTHER 3…”
Nintendo: “REALLY? Quickly! Get a press conference!”
Nintendo: “Tomato? Jeff? M3 Translation team? Are you listening? We’re making an announcment to do with releasing MOTHER3!”
Tomato & Jeff!: “Oh! OK!” *hits delete button*
Computer: *DELETES EVERYTHING*
Nintendo: “Hm… Ok, 1 minute delay over: WE ARE NEVER LOCALIZING MOTHER THREE!! HA HA HA HA HA HA”
Mato & Jeff: “That’s the SECOND TIME THey’ve got us!”
<– his way of saying that the above statement could be revised slightly 8)
I know you guys aren’t meaning that literally, though.
Uhh… how can a boulder feel better?
How can a monkey teach a young boy how to teleport through space?
The screen looks very much like nintendo made it lol awesome :).
Because babies can teach a young boy to teleport too.
SPECIAL BONUS COMIC!!!!!!

LOL Mitch, so true
Ha awesome!
To the guy asking about “dummied out stuff”, the answer is “no comment” for now. Or else he would’ve given details outright π
Wait a second, this patch has been all about putting Mother 3 on the Virtual Console, wow, that’s clever.
God!!! FOUR UPDATES?! Jeesh! This is a busy week for Mother 3, isn’t it! And this time’s JeffMan posting! JeffMan, the other guy, the Luigi…
I love the Health screen btw.
And um… Jeffman, could you possibly tell Exophase that he should keep working on gpSP for the PSP cuz it’s awesome and that using the Home button to summon the emu’s menu instead of the other face buttons would be welcome… 3: That home button thing’s the only reason I use gpSP Kai.
Anyhoooooow… So, does this mean that Mother 3 might see a June or July release?! O_O 70-80% seems like alot done.
HAHAHA nice one Mitch, I bet that OCD dude had to wash his hands like 50 times after seeing the typo.
Jau: No idea what you’re talking about.
Hey folks, am I that super-powerful flashcart guy you’re talking about? π
Progress looks good. Thanks folks for the frequent updates.
Mato: Ok guys, looks like we’re at 99.9%, this is it!
Fans: Omg, awesome! This is it!
*WARNING WARNING, Nintendo has officially announced Mother 3 translation, to be released in summer ’09*
Fans: NOOOOOOOOOOoooOOOOooOOO
Mato: *a shot is heard*
————————————
I can totally see that happening *crosses fingers*
JPH: Indeed!
Mato: I’m just saying that with Earthbound destined to sell well on the Virtual Console and the downloads of this patch, Nintendo will be tempted to put Mother 3 on Virtual Console.
Oh man, “Eye of the Tiger” just came on, what a fitting song for this hack/project.
Saph, you want Tomato dead?! O_O
If it weren’t for him, there wouldn’t be any Mother 3 translation, perhaps no Starmen.net, and no Bahamut Lagoon translation (which I love, adore, and married).
Everything is looking great folks. Thanks again. Having the opportunity to play the sequel to my Favorite Game Ever is incredibly exciting.

Holy crap, thats what I said, my theory was that they have ds game with earthbound and earthbound 0 on it, and they are just waiting for this to be done, so they can buy it and sell it… If only…
My new revised guesstimate has Mato working through the night and fixing this damn game, except for needing those clips redone and whatever minor polishing is left π
Then he completes the script draft over the weekend and…
What? Since when is poor Mato allowed a life, rest, sleep, free time or anything like that? π
> Saph, you want Tomato dead?! O_O
Of course not. He was planning to shoot whatever Nintendo guy made a fake announcement π
Speaking of Eye of the Tiger:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xfWOugouCU0
Win.
A Fan: All I know is I won’t be able to get any decent sleep if I don’t fix this line problem. I *know* what the problem is, it’s trying to find where it happens that’s the problem. So close.
And that video is awesome heh. I should hire them to do that here.
All I can say is:
F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5 F5
That pretty much sums it up for me right now.
I can see JeffMan in my mind’s eye, slaying evil with a massive battleaxe. My eye speaks to me from the void of the infinity, it does not tell whether this is happening, will happen or has come to pass. From its abyss it shows me Mato reigning over a kingdom of behemoth winds and terrible purpose. JeffMan will tear it all down, purposefully destroying himself in the process. The universe will breathe anew, having lost all it can ever lose.
You guys are my heroes. I hope I am motivated to do such leet h4x0r things sometime in the future.
Not gonna lie this is tres exciting.
Mato, where about do you live?
Also if you need any of the sound clips %^&ed with volumes and stuff, I record music so that stuff can easily be done.
First of all, let me say great job, I haven’t posted in awhile, but I’ve been watching!
That said, this disclaimer screen, while pretty, is ridiculous!! I would vote for no disclaimer screen. I would rather see you guys have a credits screen, but since nobody’s using their real names (as if you’ll go to jail if you did) there’s no point.
If you MUST have a disclaimer screen, change the second sentence to something like this:
“If Nintendo localizes Mother 3, please support it.”
Any true Mother fan is going to hold onto a patched ROM of this game, even if Mother 3 is localized. Also, any true Mother fan would support the localized game by buying it. Even if someone would delete the patch, why would they do it the second the game was announced? Anyone who follows gaming knows that an announcement does not always equal a game in your hands.
I think you guys should rethink this disclaimer screen. It’s surely not going to wreck the project, but it gives the first impression that this is a two-bit operation, while every other screen shot and movie I’ve seen shows the opposite.
(To be sung to eye of the tiger):
TOM, TOM TOM TOM, TOM TOM TOM, TOM TOM TOOOOOOOM!!!
Tom’s the man, translatin’ the motha threeeeee, GONNA WORK TILL HE’S OUTTA COMMISSION,
HE WON’T HE REALLY LOVES THE FANS!!
aw screw this, I cant write a song. God I hope you name is tom, I’ve come to the assumption that your name is Tom Mato. Is it Tom Mato? I may have read that some where, I’m not sure.
Mitch, I don’t know who you do it every update, but your’e comics are genuinely hilarious.
The wording of the screen will probably change, Jonk provided a PSD file so we can easily change it. I haven’t thought too hard about the wording yet.
amazing progress the past 2 weeks or so. it’ll suck so much for you guys though, if nintendo suddenly announces an official one.
I went away for like 10 minutes and like 20 comments *_*!
I dunno if you want to put something in there along the lines of “If you paid for this translation patch, you got robbed.” You know, just because of how people like to profit off the work of others. I seem to remember a while back people were selling SNES cartridges on eBay, basically made from translated ROMS, even advertising it as a rare unreleased prototype or something, and getting upwards of $50 for it. (In fact, I saw someone trying to do something similar with the PC versions of Ys I & II. Selling it bundled with the translation patches on a ‘bonus disc’, when it was just copies of the game discs with their own custom labels. And getting quite a bit of money for it.
But, that might be getting too wordy, I dunno. And it’s not all that important. Just a thought/concern.
disclaimer = very spiffy, i like how u guys are striving to make the hack look good too
[to Eye of the Tiger]
Meet the team, they’re f’in l33t,
Got their brains, got their h@x0rz.
Word on the street is there’s a Jap Mother 3
So it’s time to translate and rewrite.
It’s the year of the Mato, it’s the year of the Reid
Kickin’ names, takin A*& for our survival.
And the menu programmer clutches his pillow tight
Cuz his obsolete code’s just become… Starmenized, sir…
π Whatcha think?
And heh, that’s always been one of my favorite commercials. It just has. Even better is that they got the original band to sing it too. =P
And while I’m at it, how about some others, completely unrelated to anything (well, except each other.)

lol, first time I saw this one:

I can’t find the other one they did though. Where he claims the glasses can fly. =P
I think that if NoA releases Mother three. I will first have a 7 year party, and then I will compare the two versions, just see how Nintendo made the sentences form, and then finally DELORTED it.
Heh, yeah, somehow I just didn’t see Mato sleeping while Eye of the Tiger is on and there’s hacking to be done with sweet, sweet victory only a few bytes away, just on the other side of the menu programmer’s aniki’s code … π
Do it! Do it for the hilarious comic Mitch will write! And all the tigers out there! And Rocky! And Ness, Paula, Boney, Duster and the gang!
Why did that give me this crazy idea of an “ultimate showdown of ultimate destiny” but with all the Mother II & III characters, as well as a Boob Wizard?
Mato, are you going to make the disclaimer very hard to remove, in case someone decides to try and make a disclaimer-less hack?
We’ll figure out stuff like that later on, and in private.
Well actually I hope you won’t immediately delete the patch the second Nintendo hints at something, because you never know with them..
But anyways, that screen looks awesome.
Now add your names to the credits roll.
This is the sort of thing that puts this patch on another level than most other translation patches. It’s also one of the things that makes the wait a bit longer.. but, I think I can live with that.
Heh, all I can think of with that “save is corrupted and was deleted” was this insanely long and pretentious (though interesting) article about Mother 2 (http://largeprimenumbers.com/article.php?sid=mother2)
in which he jokes that “I’d love to think that [Mother 3 will] open, the first time, with a black screen that says ‘Sorry, all of your save files have been erased.'”
So it must be true!! Or something.
Awesome!!! Cant wait to play the game!!! keep up the good work π
Is it just me or is the new server having some difficulties right now?
This page refuses to load anything but the words.
Near: Jeff and I both think adding us to the credits would be a little tacky, so it probably won’t happen. There’s not enough space between all the other credits too, and changing the timing wouldn’t be good either.
The translation of the disclaimer screen and adding the new intro screen shows how professional this translation project really is good job guys. Also I really hope that you guys can add the dummied-out stuff and if possible make a list in the readme file that comes with the patch about the things that were dummied-out stuff that you added in your translation.
Woah Mato, something just came to mind! Will you be Translating the Manual and making it a .pdf File? Not Mandatory (Or however that’s spelled) but it would be pretty cool!
I remember someone in gamefaqs.com a couple of years ago translated a couple of the manual pages to English but he gave up and stoped.
Just awesome, guys. Ive been checking the site like hell for the past month or so, smiling every time the patch comes closer to completion.
With that said, you guys should add a donation page when its released, just so we can support you somehow.
/Shyv
I smell a NO DONATIONS PERIOD addition to the FAQs

Damn this bug is annoying. It’s such a simple one too, but my various attempts just make it do something else. Need brain juice.

This stupid problem won’t budge π The problem is when there’s a [BREAK] (or possibly any control code I guess) on an odd-numbered letter #. Has to do with the fact that fast text speed loads 2 letters each time (and I think if you hold the button it does more maybe) and that I’m only using 2 glyph buffers now instead of a continuous line of buffer stuff. A real pain, I want to get it done before sleep though π
It’s so exciting sitting here as you work on it! I’m freaking out!!! I can’t wait for the hacking to get done! =D Good luck I’m cheering you on! =P
Brilliant! And oh so stylish. That intro screen is haute!.
Why would adding yourself to the credits be tacky? The localization team always gets in the credits. I’m sure you guys deserve to have your names scroll up more than the “special thanks” crew.
I see from the posts that your’e busy with a bug, but OH MAN! THE WARNING SCREEN IN ENGLISH!!! So many lives were lost before Nintendo finally warned us to read the health & safety manual before enjoying a Nintendo product. Enjoy your early graves Sony & Microsoft fans.
attack(on code)of the brainjuice sipping killer(code again) mato ..hmmm sounds vaguely familar only hackier π
<3
Maybe you should make it load a small amount of dummy space whenever it hits that code?
Because it feels like it’s out of sequence after that, like half of it is looking in one glyph buffer and half in the other or something.
Hmmm, or maybe it advances to the third glyph buffer (that you don’t intend to use) after that control code on an odd character? Maybe via other code that you haven’t seen or hacked yet? …
Wow, it seems like hacking from here on out will be much easier, if this patch comes out in like a month i won’t be surprised.
You sir, have made thousands of people happy by devoting your time on this English Patch.
quick question….do you plan on testing the patched version on a psp? mine runs the japanese and the menu patch a-ok, and i have yet to come across any pre n64 games that dont work 100%. by the way i highly recommend a psp for any homebrew/emulator needs, as you can get it to play anything before ps2 (psx, n64, snes, gba, nes, atari, etc etc). and i think exophase made the gba emulator for psp so how can you go wrong?
and on one other note, for anyone in the ny area, i have an excellent tattoo artist who is pro earthbound, i got a wonderful rendition of giygas on my abdomen/ribs.
and mato…
drink guinness it makes you strong
A Fan: Already looked into all of that, it doesn’t work how you might think, though.
Anyway, I give up for tonight.
Awesome π
So you’re nearly done with hacking, eh?
Whohoo, tedious script-checking ahead :O
Wow, I haven’t checked in for a while and I can’t believe how much progress has been made. This is great news, guys. I will personally wait for five seconds at the disclaimer screen, and the second any word from Nintendo comes down the pipe about an official Mother 3 release, I will not only delete the patch, but I will personally burn my computer and every stick of furniture in the room. Using these ashes, I will concoct an elixir, the Matrilinear Tabula Rasa Eternalis, the very same spoken of in alcymical lore and possessed of profound magicks. This frothy broth shall purge any and all memory of said patch from one who may consume it, while also completing the final sequence of a spell begun eons ago that causes any and all who worked on such patch to experience the explicable taste of David Duchovney’s sweat every Friday the 13th in October, at midnight, now until the end of days.
I kinda figure it’s been run into the ground, but 2 seconds for the disclaimer screen seems really, really short for the first time. You might want to make it a tad bit longer, so people could actually read it, you know?
God, I’m getting more and more excited for this, though. I just recently finished the game in Japanese, and I’m really looking forward to actually being able to read everything this time through π
My impression of Mato:
– This was really difficult π―
– I can’t believe how easy this was π―
– I’ve gotta go π―
– I overuse this smiley (8O) alot, don’t I π―
Thank you. *Bows*
Hrm… so why would it print every other letter and only goof up if the problem was with the SECOND buffer due to an odd number of letters on the line? Mysterious.
Wait… What if it sets a bit flag somewhere that says “do not print” for that glyph buffer? One you don’t fiddle with anywhere?
Hmmm…
At this rate, I’ll be trying to hack code I’ve never actually seen in my sleep… π
amazing i cannot wait for this!
i’ve been wanting to play this game for years
Please name your translater: Mato
Favourite food?: Meth
ok: LOL that is so terrible, but i can’t help but laugh.
Is it true that all hackers look like the comic book guy?
Just trying to spoof stuff up around here, all too many “good job, take a nap” stuff in here ^^
Allthough i wish you to live well to prosper.
Good thing theres a speed button on my GBA emulator π
Seems like it’s just leaps and bounds lately. At this rate, you might some kind of temporal paradox that’ll allow you to finish by last Tuesday. Also, I can’t find that Typo that was mentioned, and now I’m really curious. Was it fixed, or am I just blind?
Anyway, you guys rock. I’ve said it before, but I can’t say it enough. You guys rock more than a gray flying squirrel, and got more funk than Toejam and Earl. You’re cooler than Sub-Zero, and more awesome than a legendary hero. We’ll all keep on cheering, and it won’t be long until it’ll be your cries of victory we’ll be hearing. If I continue with this poetic complimenting I’m gonna be beat, so now it’s time to get some sleep.
Look forward to the next update ;P
Just had to post this one last comment….I had winamp open when I posted that, and right after I typed “look forward to the next update”, the song changed to the song “Those Who Fight Further” by the Black Mages (who also rock). Thought it seemed appropriate, considering.
Looking nice, guys! Looks like we’ll be playing this sooner than I expected! I can’t wait for everyone who hasn’t played yet, to find out just how amazing this game is.
There’s a typo in one of the pictures, though. “You’re”, not “Your’e”.
I love how everyone calls attention to that error.
Wowzers, 2 things left on main hacking and 1 thing left on miscellaneous hacking (besides the possible extra spiffies put in) before the hacking is finished? Wowzers again.
That is amazing progress. I remember checking in only a few months ago when every update was little progress saying how hard things would be. Now you’re just knockin ’em down.
I thought I would mention, that even if Nintendo does release this game in America, I would buy it, but I would still play through your patch at least 1 full time before getting rid of it, just so I could witness the fruits of all your labor.
Hey Mato, I just noticed an error in one of your screencaps – where exactly is the Any Button?
I like how nobody has noticed yet that it’s called typo.png π
Sorry for the double post like this, but I was wondering something, Mato and Jeffman. Let’s play pretend for a moment and say that Nintendo saw this project and wanted to use it as an official English version… what would you guys’ reaction be to that?
How does the patch work? I mean, is it like a game cartridge, or what? Sorry if you said this somewhere else, I’m not good at finding stuff like that. XP
Ahh… I love you guys. But you probably here that a lot. I don’t think I’ve said so before but I’m watching this constantly and I’m loving all the detail. Maybe what you guys are tackling is the real reason Nintendo won’t bring it over – look at how much of a hassle the translation process is 8D
Anyway.
“We also found a way to activate some more dummied-out stuff thatβs compatible with our translation by using a cheat code, so we might set that free if it doesnβt end up being too buggy. Itβs not for sure yet though.”
I’m not entirely sure what content you’re referring to. I have only one idea that I absolutely will not repeat here because of spoilers relating to one of the final battles… and it makes me very curious if you will include it or not in one form or another…
If you know what I’m talking about and come up with some way to implement it – even if it’s an added NPC that asks if you want to experience it or something similarly heavy-handed like that – I will freaking love you all.
MotherEarth: We’re releasing it in the form of a patch. Check the FAQ section for details.
Garlyle: Heh, no, unfortunately that’s not it; I know what you’re referring to though. It’s nothing big or really related to the plot, it’s just kinda cool and it’s possible that we might add it. I’ll give more details way later maybe if we decide to pursue it, but otherwise that’s all the info I’ll give for now. π
Um, you do know that, by Press any botton to continue, it means that you can press any of the GBAs buttons to continue, right? And, games that are officialy released in the US say the exact same thing, so it’s not like it’s a typo or anything. It actually almost seems like they just took out the japanease health and safety screen and inserted the oficiall english one, just changing a couple of things.(Colouring in the warning sign with yellow and making the website blue text)
Hey i asked before, but once its done, are you gonna let everyone know through the email what date it is coming out?
Or will there be massive emails sent out as soon as its out with out a set date before hand?
Also, i’ve been following this for a while now and alot of hackers have come and gone.
What percentages would you say you and other hackers put into this project?
I doubt I’ll see the email before I click on this blog as I do EVERY GOD DAMNED DAY.
So it looks like the hacking is almost entirely finished. That leaves script editing pretty much? I’m giving you TWO WEEKS. Sike take as long as you need you poor sleep deprived man.
Yo, guys. That disclaimer screen is fly. Everybody knows it.
Also, the inclusion of exophase is fantastic. I respect him greatly for making one of the most stable emulators on the PSP.
Hey all,i just have a question.I have the rom of mother 3 but when i apply a patch it doesn’t work.It says the rom is bad but it works just fine. What am i doing wrong?
Hey, I had a question relating to the title of the game.
At the end of Earthbound, there are hints of a “Earthbound 2” in the game. I was wondering if you were planning to change the title of the game to Earthbound 2 in order to be consistent with the other 2 English version entries of the series (Earthbound 0 and Earthbound).
Any thoughts?
(Oh and great work on the hacking!!!)
Maybe someone should add the “Is the title gonna be changed to EB2!!?!?” to the FAQ… it’s asked at least 3 times an update π
It *is* in the FAQ.

FUN FACT!: Mato and Jeffman do not look like the Simpson’s comic book guy at all. The truth is that their real-life job involves male modeling and have occasionally been mistaken for Orlando Bloom and other attractive male celebrities. They are routinely features in teen magazines and on Oprah. This whole hacking and translating thing is just a hobby they picked up to attract nerd chicks.
The delay should be 5 seconds as stated previously! especially if you want people to read the patch intro on first boot.
I lovelovelovelovelove you guys. I just wish I could have done some voices. ;n; I remember, earlier this year, I was saying to myself, “the time is near…!”
Half of me doesn’t want NoA to have anything to do with localizing this, now. You guys are working so hard, I mean, after all that pleading and them not budging, I’d be pissed. A day before you release the patch, it’s 110% error free, and then:
“LOL OH HAY GUYS WE’RE RELEASING M3 IN TWO WEEKS”
I’d die. But I love YOU guys~

D: I thought Mato looked like a tomato!
For all: If Nintendo wants, or decides to release Mother 3 in english it’s NOT all just easy money for them. First, Programmers need to be paid to fix any code problems that are needed to make the game behave in English. Second, Translators need to be paid to translate the Japanese to English (Nintendo’s family friendly English). Third, More people need to be paid to design new Title screens, change the Manual to English and American format, New box art needs to be made along with making that box in the American style instead of the Japanese style. Furthermore, Nintendo needs to pay bills for the Electricity the people used to do afore mentioned work. Then, Nintendo has to print the Boxes, Manuals and Labels for the game, not forgetting to pay for the materials and work for that too. GBA carts need to be purchased to put the game on. Then work has to be done to put it on those cartridges. Q&A has to test those carts to make sure they work. After all that, then Nintendo needs to Ship it to retail stores and then profit can begin to form. Also, Don’t forget, advertisements too. And people wonder why games cost so much.
Alright, *phew* now to actual people.
Mitch: Love the new comic. I needed a good laugh.
To the Team: Never doubt the power of hackers. A friend of mine said once, “GTA for the PSP will never be cracked.” It was later that day. Starforce was considered the best protection for games, never thought to be beatable. It was beaten. If a really dedicated hacker wants something it will be done. That means the screen may be removed at some point by someone. That said, I am NOT going to delete the patch if Nintendo decides to go release the game. I will buy the game, but I will still keep the patch. If you somehow manage to make my PC die for not deleting the patch then I will bow down to you.
Jeffman: Will the Star thing for the battle memories be included?
One thing I missed, TO all (again): The dummy stuff (as far as I know) are enemies that were put in the game but not finished, so they are not avabile techinically. There was a video showing them in the debug room.
No, it’s not enemies.
Whatever it was that was dummied out, I’d be interested.
It’s a shame that it would be too hard to, say, make a new room in the game where you could go to access all the dummy stuff, with shops that sold all the dummied out items and dungeons that held all the dummied out enemies, and maybe even a place where you could switch out dummied characters or listen to dummied out music, etc. Cause that would be awesome.
And for those who are worried about deleting the final patch after having obtained it: Don’t worry–even if Mato stops distributing the patch, someone else will. Not everyone on the internet is as law abiding as our hero. So delete if you care about copyright laws, or don’t if you don’t. It’s as simple as that.
Mato, Jeffman: You’re going to have to start closing these forums even before the next update comes out. They’re just getting too big.
Another Update
Boob Wizards Two, coming soon
Huzzah for you all.
Just snuck in to say… Good Work and keep it up.
A Stunning Attention To Detail…
In this crazy world of ours there are fan-based video game translation projects and then there are fan-based video game translation projects. The team working to convert Mother 3 from Japanese into English continues to impress me as they try…
Mato, I have this image in my head of you being bald.
Sorry to intrude, but…
Are you bald?
Inquiring minds want to know.
Heh the funny thing is we’ve had that working since like last year I think, just didn’t really bother to mention it π You can even see it in this really old video here.
hasone: What an odd question. No.
As much as I love this project and this blog, somehow I always seem to get ignored. So I ask again (evil copy-pasting ahead):
Iβd like to see this translated into Spanish, so I can recommend it to friends who arenβt fluent with English.
What do you mean exactly with βfriendly to future translations into new languagesβ? Because I think I may be able to translate stuff from English to Spanish, but if it involves carzy hacking, I doubt I could handle it.
You guys are really good at what you guys do. I was wondering if you guys would do other games after Mother 3.
Games I would like to see:
Mario & Wario
Mother 1
and others :-\
Light Wolf: Translators wouldn’t need to do hacking, that’s the point Jeff was trying to make. So something like Spanish wouldn’t need extra hacking.
That’s a great thing to know.
God, I really love this thing.
π
Mato: I know it was an odd question. Now I replace the image in my head of a bald person with an image of a tomato psychically hacking teh mother 3. It’s much better that way.
I know, I’m weird.
*Imagines a little fruit sitting in front of the computer, and the MOTHER 3 rom bending to its will*
Tomato’s not a fruit, Tomato’s a person like the rest of us! π
Um…….. are you saying that fruits aren’t people?! My neighbor and his boyfriend are fruits, are you saying the’re not people?!
WHOOOOO!!!! ME LIKE DA PROGRESSSS!!!!!
Wouldn’t other languages need extra letters, including some on the naming screen, etc.? Or did you put in most of the ASCII character set somewhere? π
Anyhow, good luck getting that stupid newline thing to work!
If all else fails, you can just try to force it to use a 3rd glyph buffer for all control chars, just so you don’t have to hunt down the weird part π
Jeffrey: I’ll let you know: email me at oilprophet@yahoo.com and I’ll let you know the price for earthbound cart and good condition guide. If not it’ll sell on ebay but I want to give back to the community :()
I hope this’ll be done by July, then maybe I can download it to a flash cart and give it to him for his birthday.
It won’t be done by July.
However, I will be done in July.
Anybody that wants to play me, line up.
eyfey:
D: I thought Mato looked like a tomato!
—
It’s a little bit of both, actually. There’s a scene in Lord of the Rings that features Mato as Orlando Bloom’s stunt double if you pause it at juuuuust the right time. Only a keen eye can detect that Legolas’ character has been replaced by a fruit.
Remember kids: “If you heard about it on the internet it must be true.”
Thanks JeffMan! Sorry, I’m not the most brilliant person in the world. Yay for videogame-brain draining!! =P Sorry, I’m really random.
Looking forward to the release of your translation tools; I’d love to help do a Spanish version!
Everything seems to be going awesome, which is awesome.
I take it by the graphic(v1.0) that there will be updated versions of the patch?
Haha, cool post Jeff. Glad to see everything moving along smoothly, as expected.
*thumbs up*
Pssst, we need to play more friendlies and you need to come out to more events.
These pictures are so purty! Mato you rock dood. This game looks like it is chock full of weird motherly goodness. can’t wait.
hmm if the old code used to print all the glyphs maby there is something in the last glyph that your missing since your only using the first 2? could try using the last 2 or whatever i guess, eh you probably either already thought of it or its not even related, never mind ill go back into my closet now.
Hmm, I always pictured Tomato to look more like Apple Kid, except less chubby and dirty.
I don’t know about deleting the patch immediately if Nintendo announces a translation. They’ve announced plenty of things that haven’t actually made it here. :p
Great, now they have to hack a “Tomato Kid” into the game somehow…
Hmm, someone send the idea to Itoi for Mother 4! π
Okay, after hours and hours (Or 30 minutes) of research, I was wondering, is it totally legal to download a ROM without owning a copy of the game itself? I want to play Mother 3, otherwise I wouldn’t be here, but not to the extent to do something illegal (or pay $50 for a copy XP). Thanks!
Itoi already said he isn’t making a Mother 4 (although he said that if someone else would like to, then it’s ok).
To all you EB Fanart makers, do you forget to ever forget to draw Ness’s backpack as well?
Hey Mato. I guess you were too busy at the time but I asked something a few updates back about the translation of Tazmily. Are you going to keep using Tazmilly or are you going to go with Brawl’s translation of Tazumili?
(url cut out)
Tazmily for now, the translators probably didn’t realize Nintendo already had an official spelling for it. Similar to how Claus was spelled Klaus in the early English data of the Japanese SSBB discs, except they were able to look up info on that and fix it for the English release.
In response to post above me.
That description of Lucas’s trophy in that youtube video has plot spoilers. Thanks for the warning
Well, yeah. All I can say was that the vid really was meant for Mato.
I really hope this game is done by at least September. I might be being optimistic, but August would be really cool. WORK DANGIT, WORK!!!
Umm…ahem…anyhoo…umm…good…work?
I was playing The World Ends With You on the DS and one of the badges gives you an attack called “Sexy Beam.”
I thought Mato might get a kick out of it.
MotherEarth: No, it’s actually totally illegal to have a ROM of a game unless you made the dump yourself. So if you’re looking to stay 100% in the white, you’d have to buy both Mother 3 and a tool to dump GBA games.
If you’re OK with being slightly in the grey area, you can just buy Mother 3 and then download the ROM. I doubt the feds would haul you off to jail if you did indeed own a copy of the game. I guess you could say it’s “less illegal”.
And, if you’re like most people reading this, you’ll just download the ROM and not bother buying a copy of the game.
(Side note: I personally will stick to the grey area approach.)
Mato, for the main hacking, is the credits thing the only thing that’s left. If so, good luck, I know how difficult it is.
Mother 3 almost done!!!! Right? How do you think it will take now to release this? By the way thanks for all your hard work!!!!!
