PK Stuff!
Some small things done in the last day or so. But first, since a couple big strides have been made since the last battle video, I thought I’d make another short one to show the improvements. You can check it out here:
Keep in mind that the current build still uses really old and not-that-greatly translated battle text from before the project merge. The battle text was recently re-translated from scratch (thanks Chewy!) and just needs some reformatting and stuff. So the final battle text WILL be better. Honest.
Next, I did some more work on the battle text routine, but it’s still proving to be a formidable foe. It gets called at different times and has different parameters some of those times, so I gotta do some more mind-numbing tracing. I also gotta figure out how to make it do line breaks correctly. And just my luck, the game acts differently when you hold down the button while text is going (this speeds text up), and the programmers were lame enough to make the text print differently in those cases. What a hassle. Battle text is improving though, which is good news ๐
Next, while messing with some stuff, I realized that the game doesn’t print Lucas’ special attack (the one you get to name) correctly, as it was still using the game’s original text encoding for the PK and the greek letters. Jeffman swooped in to fix this problem quickly, though. And what’s best of all, is that the routine he hacked is used everywhere else in the game! So the one fix fixed it everywhere else in the game. I don’t think ANY hack in this game has done that before. Usually there are like 3 or 4 versions of everything that need to be hacked individually. So that’s sweet. You can see it in action below. It works with the main script, the main menus, the battle menus, and even battle text ๐
Before (yeah, I see it ๐ ) After Before After Before After
Or, if love isn’t your thing, you can always do this.
Meanwhile, reid and co. have started recording the two tiny voice clips, and I’ve already got one in the game now. The only problem with it is that the game plays the current clip at too low of a volume, so it gets drowned out by music easily. I can’t raise the volume of the clip any more without it crackling, so I may need to figure out how to make the game play it louder in-game.
Also, yesterday I did some fun tests to see if I could undummy any of the dummied-out enemies. If you don’t mind spoilers, check out the thread here. And this video doesn’t really have any spoilers (well, stuff in the “Related Videos” thing at the end might have some, so be careful), but it’s a video of a un-dummied enemy that includes a cool fight and some main menu stuff. It’s probably cooler than the video above, at least ๐
That’s all for now. Happy Wednesday ๐
Awesome!
Nice ^^ at least the battle system will be beter
very nice, I am impressed =)
Looking great.
Keep going, guys! It seems like a long job, but I’m sure it will be worth it.
Nice work! I just completed the game today (21 hours and started two days ago :p) and can’t wait it play it again when it’s translated!
You know, I just realized — someone a while back asked me why the mole would feel homesick, and I wasn’t really sure why. But then I just remembered that the markings in this cave are shaped like the main islands of Japan. So maybe that’s why it’s homesick, it’s in some other country ๐ Though you can fight the moles elsewhere, so uhh maybe that’s just reading too deep into things or something.
“But then I just remembered that the markings in this cave are shaped like the main islands of Japan. So maybe thatโs why itโs homesick, itโs in some other country ;)”
Perhaps, but I figure it’s just because it crawled out of its hole. You know, perhaps… its home is down there? ๐
Anyway, you guys are doing great work on this stuff! Keep it up!
Hehe! This is getting better.
Awesome video, can’t wait for the patch. It’s pretty cool that every time you update you say, “oh yeah, we fixed this cool thing now too!” I know it’s been said, but it’s great that this way we actually know things are progressing, unlike the year+ of basically nothing but drama from mother3.org. So thank you, it actually seems possible now.
Also, I think the download link to the video is broken.
woooooo!!!!!
Is the whole mole hole full of weird writing, then?
Huh? That place is actually just a very small one-room cave.
(Actually, that room has another door that leads somewhere, but it looks like the map people decided to block it off. Just another thing taken out of the game ๐ )
โBut then I just remembered that the markings in this cave are shaped like the main islands of Japan. So maybe thatโs why itโs homesick, itโs in some other country ;)โ
Isn’t this game supposed to take place in America? I’m pretty sure I read that somewhere but I could be wrong.
No, it definitely doesn’t.
Sorry I said that wrong. I meant isn’t the game supposed to be based more on western culture?
Zero: Earthbound Zero (MOTHER 1) and Earthbound (MOTHER 2) take place in “Eagleland”, which is supposed to represent America. MOTHER 3 takes place on Nowhere Island.
So, no, it isn’t.
I would embed the second Youtube video you linked to in this thread instead of linking to it. The ‘related videos’ section actually DOES constitute a huge spoiler just by looking at the thumbnails.
Yeah, stupid related videos. Wish there was a way to take that off. Oh well.
although anyone worried about spoilers will only have until March 10th to protect themselves anyway. once brawl’s out it’s kind of a moot point.
Wednesday has never been so good. ๐
Ah, that explains it! ๐ A mole from Japan! ๐ฎ That could have other meanings too… but that sounds like a whole nother fanfic entirely. ๐
Nice job Jeffman & Mato! You keep surprising me with these frequent updates.
Looks really nice, Mato. What happens when battle text goes to the next line? I assume you avoided it in the video because it probably causes big issues!
You can see it in the second video, actually. It just goes weird. I need to do a lot of real life work now though, so I won’t be able to fix it for at least a few days. I think with a few hours of tinkering I could get it to do the newlines correctly.
Maybe you could say that the mole gets “habitat sick” or “misses his habitat”.
VERY nice. It looks almost official, already!
Beautiful.
so mato, my boy. you haven’t marked anything off the to-do list recently have you? …just asking.
Well, I have nothing to say that I (and others) haven’t said before. I guess I can just say Keep Up the Good Job! ๐
Actually, this kinda made my Wednesday. :3 (BTW, about the enemies that were taken off, couldn’t someone do a graphic hack and change the Yokomon to something else like a question mark or something similar? Or if it can be done, an actually overworld sprite of the enemy itself? I… wouldn’t mind trying my hand at it. So far, it seems to be the only hacking I can do…)
LOL Lucas was doing the Moon Walk in the second video XD
“Zero: Earthbound Zero (MOTHER 1) and Earthbound (MOTHER 2) take place in โEaglelandโ, which is supposed to represent America. MOTHER 3 takes place on Nowhere Island.”
I always thought that EBZERO/MOTHER takes place in “rural america”, and only Mother 2 is in Eagleland. Did you get that info from a japanese guide or something?
brandnizzlebaby: Can’t cross stuff off until they’re done. I’ve been working hard on one of the hardest things, so it’ll naturally take a while.
I’m a professional writer who just stumbled across this project. I generally don’t work for free but as a huge Earthbound fan, I’m more than willing to help with script-editing/dialogue. Can’t find a contact email on the site so if anyone is interested, let me know via the forums?
I don’t know about the file you got from reid & friends, but if the volume isn’t high enough, and manipulating it on your end messes up the quality, could you ask them to re-record it….but louder? Taking a quiet sound and amplifying it up makes it crackle like you said, so maybe this would help? Might also be easier than playing with the program.
PS: this is my first post and i’ve been following this business for ages…i’m so excited/proud/giddy/supportive. Woot!
earthbound 64 patch coming soon?
“Maybe you could say that the mole gets โhabitat sickโ or โmisses his habitatโ.”
I could only understand that if he were in a laboratory someplace, which he normally isn’t. Most areas you face him would be his natural habitat, but I think Tomato nailed it when he said their original “homes” (or mole holes) may be in Japan. ๐ So by that explanation the Mischievous Moles could very well logically miss Japan having been away for so long, effectively making them homesick. Who knows how they got to Nowhere Island… maybe they were abducted by the P.M.A.? …or maybe they’re “moles” from Japan, on a secret mission on Nowhere Island. (Yeah, that’s what I meant when I mentioned possible fanfics earlier.) Of course, that would instigate that the inhabitants of Nowhere Island and the mole embassy + populace of Japan have long been sworn enemies. ๐ฎ Yikes.
Wait, is Nowhere Island even on Earth? That point was never fully explained. Of course, I couldn’t even understand the game when I played it. I mean, suppose that Nowhere Island isn’t on Earth, and the invading aliens are actually FROM Earth. That would put a weird twist on the Sci-Fi genre, wouldn’t it?
Or maybe I’m completely wrong.
That would certainly explain why the Mischievous Moles miss Japan so much. X)
i was just wondering, mato. that’s all. good work man.
This is really starting to look quite good. I think it’s reasonable to say at this point that localizing Mother 3 is definitely possible and well on its way, contrary to what Nintendo insisted on saying (“would take ages to localize”). The fact that this team is pulling it off quite nicely through hacking makes Nintendo look like a bunch of lazy bums because they actually had the source to work with but lacked the guts to tackle the bad coding.
I just watched this at Gametrailers and thought the video’s title was quite amusing ๐
Maybe there’s someone from Gametrailers following this project…
Cool!More progress!
Mother 3 is getting closer!
This is pretty cool to see the progress being made. It is pretty well written even though it’s not action packed or anything. It’s kind of like what the writer Haruki Murakami might do. Anyway, it would be cool if after this project was done all of the blog entries were put cut and pasted into a book or something to be like a short story or something. It might seem like experimental writing, but it would be totally awesome, and I know of several writers who’ve written stories like blog entries or letters or similar stuff. Sorry for the long comment on the blog entry.
lol when i was a kid i always thought eagleland was to say its placed in england
also correct me if im wrong the original idea with earthbound was to overexaggerate RPG clicheโs while adding a myriad of quirky comedy to the mix
Man, pk butts alpha is the new rockin’.
You guys are awesome, what else is there to be said? I’ve been following this project for awhile now, and have to applaud your efforts so far. Please keep them up, and while I’m sure this goes without saying, no rush. A quality translation job is well worth the wait.
@ FailedLegend: Same here. Ness even sounds like he has a slight English accent in Super Smash Bros. (especially when he uses PK Thunder)
Man, this project is on multiple levels of awesome. Seeing the battle text look so well (with exception of the accelerated text issue. (That was an odd bug to discover.)) is getting me a lot more excited.
About the voice clips: Shouldn’t you be able to record it higher instead of raising the volume afterwards?
Ah, I see the decision was made to make it “PK” instead of PSI even though the mother3.org poll turned out with PSI winning. Ah well, can’t say I agree with it but it’s trivial anyway.
For technical reasons, it’s also best left as PK. We’d have to reduce the # of letters you can name your favorite thing otherwise. The game also uses a mixture of PSI and PK originally anyway.
[…] traduzione dei combattimenti! Qui sotto trovate un video, cliccando su continua un altro, mentre qui la pagina del sito che spiega dettagliatamente i recenti […]
Yeah. It’s clear that Mother (EarthBound “Zero”) was loosely based on America, with “Ellay” (L.A.)…
What’s unclear is whether Eagleland was meant to represent “England”… or if infact it were Eagle-land; “America”. Our national bird, the Eagle.
…maybe it’s some weird combination of both? I always considered Fourside to be in likeness of New York, and Onett to be Connecticut or even Massachusetts. Afterall, Eagleland could very well just represent the 13 New England states. ๐ Therefore, it could likely be America, with England’s influence on the 13 eastern states. It would make sense; Ness’s home would be Massachusetts, and the reason he has an English accent is because his family originated in the bloody continent of England. I’m the same way, so I could relate to Ness in that sense.
Nobody can figure out my accent. The northerners think my accent is southern, the southerners think my accent is yankee… and I just think to myself, “what accent?!” ๐ It’s enough to drive me crazy.
Well, the original MOTHER says the game takes place in America. MOTHER 2 says Eagleland, and there’s even a world map that comes with the instruction booklet (see here) The world map is all skewed and stuff, but Eagleland is definitely North America-y, while Winters is Englandy (which makes sense, given Stonehenge and a famous sea monster) and blah yeah you can see the rest ๐
Sweet, you guys are awesome!
hey Mato, stupid question but, if I were to put up a post in japanese, could you read it?
Thanks so much for the progress, I can’t wait to play the game. I wish I hadn’t watched that second video on you tube though…I think I saw a spoiler that ruined the plot for me ๐
Oh, and when I say I saw a spoiler…I didn’t see it in the video, but in the related videos.
Wouldn’t it be ironic if Nintendo finally decided to release Mother 3 in the states right when you finished?
Is it weird that I want Nintendo to release MOTHER3, but only after the patch is done? I figure if they do release it, it’s likely that it’d be on the DS and I want to play it on my TV via the GB Player. Can’t do that with a DS game.
I mean at this point I should be happy with what I get, but…
I’d be totally okay with it if Nintendo released it right before we’re done. I WANT an official release very badly. I want to work on other projects and sleep more and such ๐ But so far they don’t care, bleh.
And yeah, it’d kind of suck if an official release were done on the DS, I love playing it on the big screen with my GB Player ๐
Wow, I’d forgotten about that old map. So Onett is somewhere in the pacific northwest? Never quite figured that. Twoson, of course, looks like it’s in exactly the right place to be Tucson, AZ though you’d think the desert would’ve been closer to it. Threed on the east coast, mmm, that seems out of place too, somehow. But there really aren’t a lot of places with large zombie populations, so who knows? Fourside as New York City isn’t hard to see, though. Summers as a Mediterranean resort is easy to see, too, as is Winters as England, complete with private boarding school, Nessie and Stonehenge. Scarabia as Egypt fits, too, of course.
Guess I never looked at that map closely enough? ๐
Well, I just basically consider America and Eagleland the same. Oh, and by the way, that’s the world map? How small is the world of MOTHER 2?! I mean, Onett and Twoson are pretty far apart on that map…
Does anyone have a link to that Earthbound / Mother 2 world map?? I don’t think I’ve ever seen it (and can’t find it on the Goog).
Nevermind! I’m blind apparently and skipped right over Mato’s link, so….
Keep up the great work M3 translation team!
Mato: Don’t get me wrong, I’d be there on the first day to buy an official release (I mean, I bought the Japanese version and I can’t even read it), I just want to play on my big TV. I’m an ass-in-recliner, controller-in-hand kind of guy, I guess ๐
Maybe WiiWare? … It’s nice to dream about what will never be, haha.
ok i know its off topic but theres two reasons im posting this link…Number 1 = Proof that links earthbound and final fantasy development team…Number 2 theres at least 50% perfect of this community thats as fanatical as me to appreciate a complete history of the entire Final fantasy series which has secrets and related media to the series unknown even to me who leanred how to speak playing mario and final fantasy..anywho if i didnt piss anyone off with my off-topic statement heres the link
http://www.gametrailers.com/player/27455.html
its in 13 parts but for some reason the autoplay plays em backwards but you can play em the right way manually 1-13
anyways just so Mato doesn’t strip me of the ability to use the final patch :)…….as far as that map goes it makes sense as far as the locations go on that map the environmental and National Monuments and legends go it makes sense (for the American locations ill take ur word for it the farthest south I’ve gone is buffalo) but the scale isnt in distance traveled kind of destroys that idea…what do you guys think
P.S. Hey Mato can i make my website that uses my name as a link a link to a site with a japanese rom of M3 or would you prefer not to have that?
an edit on that last ppost you will only notice the link between FF and EB if you keep track of names of actually people in the companies not only the company names but its still an interesting watch ๐
Was the overworld sprite of the Tree enemey in the actual game? Do you all plan on keeping the Dummy enemies in the game?
What exactly do you need to hack into a rom in order to translate it? I want to translate the old gameboy color game Survival Kids 2 into English.
Ketchup–an assortment of hacking utilities and applications designed specifically for the ROM and type of system, as well as extensive C, C++, Java, etc. knowledge.
At least that’s what I assume.
Where would I get these and instructions on how to use them? I know a bit of Japanese and dabble in computer stuff, so I thought it would be cool to translate an old game, but I first need to know what to get and where.
http://www.romhacking.net/start/ is the best place to start.
It would be awesome if Nintendo bought the code for this hack and made Mother 3 into Wii Ware in NA and EU. That would make me so happy.
Sweet. Thanks for keeping us updated!
Heh, I’ll be honest and say I would *not* buy the code we’re hacking. It’s ugly and trying to debug it would be hellish. This isn’t how programs are supposed to be coded, either. I don’t know how to explain it, but maybe it’s like someone saying you should buy a really nice-looking car when in fact you know the engine was hacked up to use weird auto parts from Crazycountryania that were made from animal bones and not metal.
I think my comparisons get weirder by the day. Maybe sleep is good.
If the sound clip is too quiet, you don’t need to rerecord it. The normalizer function in Sound Forge (and probably many other sound editors) lets you compress the sound (the waveform, not the file size) so you can make it louder without it clipping (which makes that nasty crackling). Too much compression can make the sound a little muddy, but if it’s going to be coming from a GBA speaker, it’s going to be muddy anyway.
Sorry if you guys already know all this, but I saw a few people make suggestions to rerecord and that’s really not necessary unless you actually need a retake.
I know you’ve heard it a lot, but amazing progress the last few days, and all that stuff, and I can’t wait to play this game again in a language I actually have a good grasp of. ๐
Can you suggest a flash cart that this would be most likely to work on? I really want to play on the GB player.
You make me so wistful with your gameplay videos and you taunt me with your progress reports. Waiting for this game is such sweet agony. If I wait much longer I will go mad, but when the project is finally done, I pretty much won’t have anything to look forward to anymore. Woe is me.
By the way, am I the only one who watched that FF video and did not see any connection to EarthBound? Don’t get me wrong: it’s a good video. I just fail to see the relevance.
I must say this: if you want to *own* Mother 3, eBay is AWESOME! I got it for a decent price, after knocking up a few prices myself. Prices range from $40-$110. ๐
…but of course I know most of you are here for the full english translation, as am I. ๐
DJ Squarewave: Thanks for the advice. I’ve been messing around with various things trying to get it louder without crackling. I haven’t had much time these past few days though, so I’ll try that out when I can. I’ve been using Goldwave which is pretty nice for most everything I’ve needed it for, but my free trial expires soon, gah ๐ฏ
> Ketchupโan assortment of hacking utilities and applications designed specifically for the ROM and type of system, as well as extensive C, C++, Java, etc. knowledge.
Nah, you don’t need to know C, C++ or Java, though general programming knowledge is helpful (especially if you make your own hacking tools, which is probably necessary for anything but trivial hacks).
You DO need to know the assembly code for whatever system you’re hacking, though, as well as the hardware (thanks to Mato, I now know that the GBA uses an ARM and THUMB processor). You probably also want some kind of debugger, because you’re likely to have to trace code when things go wrong.
But any sort of assembly is much different that C++ and such. C is at least somewhat close, especially if you use lots of macros in assembly. It’s not that hard to understand assembly–basically, the processor starts reading instructions from somewhere in memory and it has all these registers that store the results of whatever computation you just did. There are also ‘status flags’ that tell you what just happened (e.g. was the last number you computed zero? was it zero? was there an overflow or carry?). You then get lots of operations that shove things off to memory (and some memory is special, in that it’ll get drawn on the screen or played by the speaker and whatnot), read things from memory (and some memory is special, and might tell you what button was pressed last, etc.), or compute things. Or tell it to go do other instructions. Then you have interrupts, which notify you that something just happened (e.g. button got pushed). You even have special instructions to drop what you’re doing and do something else, but return to your original task later (useful for ‘servicing’ those interrupts–e.g. make note of what button was just pressed, then go back to figuring out how much HP that last attack took).
Of course, looking at a ROM, all you have are lots of mystery instructions and data. Sadly, just because it wrote ‘5’ somewhere in memory doesn’t tell you much. Was that someone’s HP? Does it tell something else to display tile #5 on the screen? You have no idea until you trace through the whole mass of spaghetti trying to figure out what the hell the game is doing right then ๐
If it were C or C++, there’d at least be comments or structure, like char.hp = 5; or whatever. With ASM, you maybe get something like store a ‘5’ at the location in RAM pointed to by register 7, but no clues as to why.
Mato, if you need a good free sound editor, I’d check out Audacity (http://audacity.sourceforge.net/) if you haven’t yet.
Mato,
for things like making the sound better and stuff… you can always just throw it out there for the fans so that you dont have to spend time working on it
Coconut the video is 13 parts the rest in nin the right the video i linked is the 13th part
I have to agree with Tonto; I use Audacity and it is quite decent as far as freeware sound recorders/editors come. I use it frequently whenever I record enemy sounds (my own voice… don’t laugh! :P) for my game project… which shall be for a long time kept a secret until it’s ready for the world to see.
Unsavory Maggot:
Will your game project be sent to us?
Mato-
I know that you guys say to buy a copy of Mother 3 rather than donating, but considering the situation, and the fact that I already have a copy of the game, would you consider accepting a donation for the amount necessary to purchase a copy of Goldwave?
Rawlandsabeast,
naw dude, “money makes things ugly” as Mato once said
i think its because Nintendo could be like “WWWWwwHHhHAAaTTT?! you profited from OUR work? Grrrrrrrrrrrrrr”
or something like that
Nice to see how big this has grown over the months, like fanbase..
Thanks again
Here is a pretty simple way to make the recording louder…
Play the file at full volume on your speakers into another mic that is recording. If you do it right, you wont lose too much quality and the file should be much louder.
Actually, I edit audio for a local band and have a radio station quality mic. I would be thrilled to do that work for you…that is if you want my help.
Oh, and by the way…buying an audio recording program is unnecessary if you plan on editing it on your own. Audacity is free and great and Goldwave is extremely functional on its free version. Feel free to ask me if you need any tips or help or such on the topic of audio editing.
Thanks for your guys’ help and offers to donate and all, but I think I’ll be okay for now. I did check out Audacity, but it’s hard switching from Goldwave ๐ I’ll probably just register GW since I use it a lot as it is. But I still got a couple hundred more actions I can do with the trial version so I might be able to go without registering it for now ๐
The clip that has volume problems is only .455 seconds long and is only heard when you use a semi-rare item that’s mostly pointless and that few will really ever use unless doing sidequest type stuff I guess. So it’s not that big of a deal. I’ll just keep messing with it until it sounds acceptable.
The other clip (the long clip that’s more important) I asked reid to re-record and I’m still waiting on that. Luckily, it’s played when there’s no music playing so that’s helpful ๐
ArashiSai: The project requires much fine-tuning and I can only imagine it will take me at *least* two more years to complete. I’m not holding my breath here, but I’m still pretty hush-hush about it, I was quite reluctant to show it to my close friends and family. However, if it becomes marketable, I’m more than willing to give Tomato and his team free copies as thanks. ๐ I’m not quite sure about marketing though, personally… and would much rather think about that at the *last* minute when I’ve completed and optimized it. When I have some cash to spare though, I may have to hire some artistic talents. The sad thing is, I’ve been working on this for a good 4 years now, with lots of life and breaks in-between, so I’m still fine-tuning the game engine and fiddling with the first dungeon. (If that clues you in on the *type* of game I’m working on, haha!)
oh yeah, finally caved and ordered my japanese copy. i’m not sure what will be tougher, waiting the week for it to come, or not being able to read the text. i guess i’ve already waited my entire life….i’ll just need to use a walkthrough to get past the language…..oh well
oh and there are a few cheap copies on ebay if anybody’s looking
awhile ago i said i did this weird thing using the debug room…well i made a video to prove what i did
Gravity Defier: That’s cool, but your video had spoilers, so I removed the link. Please be more careful ๐
ok sorry….
Good job everyone!
One thing worries me though.. You are going to do voice-overs in the game?
That sounds painfull (>_
What? my message was cut off! Anyway I was asking if you
are gonna make a version of the patch with the original
sound clip? Thanks.
I would assume your message was cut off because of the “lesser than” sign, which just so happens to be used in HTML tags… those characters are sometimes filtered to avoid people inserting HTML data into a post
hey mato, how big will this patch be? Cuz I don’t really have huge amount of space on my computer…
Hmm: Yes, it’s been talked about many times before, read previous entries for more info. There are only two clips, one is .455 seconds long and is heard when you use a rare item. The other is played ONCE during the story and is 1.304 seconds long. That’s it. If you’re insistent on hearing the Japanese, you can download this and listen to it until your ears fall off ๐ You can also play the Japanese version.
Also, there’s only going to be one version of the patch.
Arashi Sai: Probably 1 to 2 megs unzipped. Once you apply it to the ROM, you wouldn’t need it anymore, though. So if you’re that low on hard drive space, you can get rid of the patch once you apply it correctly ๐
No, that’s perfect for me, thx
KEEP ON THE AWESOME WORK
Incredible. Look at all the work you guys have done. First class fellas!
Should probably mention that a bunch of real-life work caught up with me and I gotta take care of that first, so there might not be any updates (or any big updates) for the next few days at least. That’s what happens when you work freelance and spend too much time on MOTHER 3, probably more than you should. Just saying so here so people don’t think we’re dead ๐
np Mato we cant have you going broke now ๐
Nah, that’s not it ๐ It’s more like reponsibility, since writers and actors and all those kinds of people rely on me providing them stuff to work on. So I gotta be a responsible adult sometimes — don’t want good, hard-working people losing money cause of me, you know?
Or you starving to death. O_O
yes starving would be bad…anywho go Mato help the actor/writer people woot
[sarcasm]So, when will the patch be done?[/sarcasm]
(Gambate!)
It’s tough being freelance, I understand that. Projects come and go, but when you find something special, like Mother 3, you hold onto that. ๐
Heck, I picked up a game business book for good measure myself. Just so I can be prepared for when I’m ready to *invest* in my own project, gain knowledge of what makes the *business* part of gaming tick. Convincing a company my product is worth marketing, getting paid advance fees, and hoping they don’t take too much back when all’s said and done… I wonder how much I would spend on advertisements. ๐ฎ Given the caliber of the project, I’d probably end up doing what the creators of small-time PC games like Virtual Villagers did; forget the advertising, and hope casual shoppers will see the pretty package and give it a chance… boy would I love to invest in big beautiful boxes with instruction manuals roughly as big as a Nintendo Wii. ๐ฎ Although, I’d rather invest in a nice soundtrack! ๐ Of course, low budget projects and all, I strongly doubt I’ll end up with anything as nice as a Super Smash Bros. Brawl or even a modern day console Sonic soundtrack. I also tell myself I’ll just worry about music when I’m done with the main project.
fakestarboy: Nope, works perfectly. Removed your comment though, I want that to be a surprise for people.
What do you want to be a surprise?
Something fakestarboy was asking about.
What do you work as, Mato?
Mr. Resume Link Used To Be Here
holy cow, you’re awesome!
btw, I underestimated my own japanese. I tried playing the pure japanese version of mother 3 and I spoiled just about everything of chapter 1, something I wasn’t trying to do ๐
cool, dude.. your real name revealed
WHOA! I have a whole new respect for you, Tomato! That’s the exact direction I want to take my life in, actually. Maybe not translating per se, but reverse-engineer the idea. Teaching overseas. Of course I’m a madman because I also want to complete my top-secret game project… however I suppose this inspires me. I could complete it, and translate it myself. It’ll take ages, but it’s been 4 1/2 years already on this project; I doubt the fire will die anytime soon. ๐ฎ Ah, the day when one man does it all… I mean sure I’ll hire people for the french and german versions, but still. A one man team doing a project in two languages… suddenly there’s a whole new meaning for what I’ve been dreaming of. I just hope they don’t release an OS that’ll nuke my project in the meantime. Vista STILL gives me the chills. >_
Whoops! Message cut! Haha! I should’ve learned after seeing it happen to someone else. ๐
Anyways, congratulations on the degrees, and the jobs. ๐ฎ Keep up the good work and fight the good fight! ๐ Oh… and you might want to hide your real name, etc. before anyone sees it. The big N could stand for Notoriously-evil. I mean, this could cost you your job, not to mention all of this progress; you could actually get tracked down by the big bad. I’m just saying. I’ve seen it every now and then. Plus I’m insanely paranoid.
Nintendo already has all my contact info, I applied for a job there a few years ago. They’re fully aware that I’m involved with the project, too.
But yeah, I don’t like to show off much, so I’ll take the link away ๐
They are? ๐ฎ Did they say much/anything about it?
Hah, wouldn’t that be cool if after this, Mato got hired by Nintendo?
Nah, after hearing from a couple people, it probably wouldn’t be my thing to work there after all. Sounds too dramay and the hours seem a bit too long.
And I’m surprised any of this is news to anyone. I covered it here, after all ๐
Wow. I knew about the DIYD project before I went to the former translation site, but I missed everything inbetween working domino’s, moving and living without the internet. That is one wild story… almost EB-esque. Guess I can’t exactly sympathize for Nintendo knowing this much. The fanbase that works there though… and looks forward to the patch… I’m amazed. Corporate piracy. ๐ That sounds beautiful to this starmen.net member. Well… it’s almost Monday… ๐ฎ I can’t wait to see and hold the real deal… one thing emulation never did for me. It would be nice to one day do the same in english. I’m glad though. I appreciate all the effort you guys put into this.
Keep up the great work.
Great updates as always, keep up the excellent work
Although I have a question to you hard-working hackers, is hacking any different from actually creating a game? I’m working at my best on my fan game/gift, Mother Savior, my fan version of Mother 4 (though I now do not really like referring it as Mother 4, but I’ll state it as so anyways to avoid mass confusion). I am able to create a very alike battle system, create the battle music beat combo system, sprites, etc. I was wondering, if you guys need help on anything, I’m willing to support. I’m pretty excellent when it comes down to either coding or sprites.
Very Very Good MY Friends I am of Looking the Forward to the Release of Game “Mother 3” to Partake Enjoyment of the Head and of Many Laughter ! ๐ Talent Team
