Comparisons & Stuff
Despite being pretty busy these past few days, a nice amount of work on Mother 3’s gotten done. Most of it is stuff that’s not apparent in screenshots or videos or anything though, and some of it also involves stuff in the game that I’d rather not spoil.
Mostly just upgrades to our various tools, adding on some more hacks to harmony’s work, some little utilities to help with the custom inserter, etc. Jeff’s been working extra hard on all sorts of stuff, he’s awesome.
I liked how the before-and-after thing looked in the last update, so just for fun, I did that with some other parts of the game. Here’s some comparison pics for your viewing pleasure. As always, these are works in progress pictures, so if something seems weird, there’s probably no need to make a fuss π
A couple more.
Some other quick things.
- People have reported a few tiny bugs in the menu patch that are easy enough for me to fix, and I can also add in new graphics like chapter titles, ATM screen graphics, etc. to make a slightly newer version. But I’m not sure if it’s worth updating the patch or not. Downloads have really tapered off now, so I’m not sure if it’s worth the trouble. The bugs aren’t too major. Should I bother updating it, or should I just leave it all as-is? My main worry is that multiple patches might confuse people and also make it seem like that crappy patch is what we’re focusing on/what the final version will be like.
- Today’s Smash Bros. Dojo update has a slight Mother 3 spoiler (depending on who you are), so if you’re one of those last few trying to avoid any little thing, here’s your heads up. Nothing major, but I know some people want to avoid that stuff a lot.
- I don’t know a completion percentage for the project. It’s pretty much impossible to come up with a percentage when it comes to ROM hacking projects. So please don’t ask. I should probably add this to the FAQ page π
Not too much this time around, but with any luck there’ll probably be a slightly better and more interesting update sometime next week π
I already know the spoiler for SSBB. π I’m using it for one of my own games.
I say don’t focus on releasing little bug-fix patches and stuff. Focus on trying to get the hack down right, down to quality, whatever amount of time it takes.
(Woo! I’m the first commentator! :D)
If you want a bug report: The other day I finally beat the last boss of chapter one and after some story, the game asked me to save. I wanted to save, so I went and clicked yes. When I clicked on my file, boom! It froze. I think this is a bug with the emulator I’m using, however. (Exophase’s gpSP for the PSP). Heck, I was even surprised that gpSP even ran Mother 3 at all and more so how well it did so. (My PSP is the best alternative to a GBA flashcart…) So, maybe its not the game that caused my problem, maybe not even worth looking into it. I was able to continue to the second chapter without saving in the intermission. Life went on.
Oh man! I saw Bonus Video #1 over at Romhacking.net! XD (Sorry for the diabolical double-posting)
Yeah, I wouldn’t worry about the patch to much. It looked like the main reason to release it anyways was so people could try to beat M3 before Smash Bros got kicked back from Novermber to February.
Chiming in to say that I agree with your reasoning behind leaving the menu patch alone, Tomato.
Bonus links are love.
I’m actually fairly glad about that spoiler at Dojo. It shows that Sakurai-san’s really studying his source material.
And, yeah, sweet! I gotta admit, I’m pretty intrigued about that museum-looking place. Possible Mr. Spoon tribute? : D
He could stalk the pink-haired girl!
Yaaaay! *clapping*
Not much to say, just showing my unending support for the team. I suppose I could also note that I don’t think it’s too big a deal to update the little menu patch.
It’s good to hear that you guys added some more hacks to harmonyβs work which is really paying off and upgraded various tools, also It’s very good that you guys released a menu patch for those people who really wanted to play mother 3 before the release of smash bros, but I also think you guys should not update the menu patch because multiple patches might confuse people and your main focus right now is the release of a complete mother 3 patch and everyone should understand that, anyway thanks for the bonus links.
I think that any progress made is great, and I think that if it will only take an hour or two, the menu patch update would be great and would start up many new downloads of the menu patch (probably from the people who already downloaded the original menu patch, but if you have barely any time, and a few hours would take away a lot from what you could get done on the real patch, I suggest you let the menu patch stay as it is.
Time-wise I’d say yeah, an hour to make it, an hour to quickly test it. Hadn’t thought of the idea that more people might find out about it/this translation through another update to the menu patch, but dunno.
When are the character names (during dialogue) going to be changed?
Black Death: November 8 by 2 PM. Mark your calendar.
Black Death: before the final version is out π
You are the best! im really greatfull you translate this π
Okay, good. π
BTW Moulinoski, your problem is most likely an emulator setting. It’s not a result of the patch. Check the menu patch page, I added some things to the FAQ a while back that address people who have emulator/saving issues.
In regards to updating the menu patch, if you’re worried to how people will take it, you’re worrying too much :P. You’re all on the right path and that’s all that should matter, imho.
I can’t tell how stressed you guys are internally, but from here everything looks great. If anyone has ever showed anger towards the progress, never forget they aren’t the people you guys are doing this for. Any semi-coherent fan knows showing impatience can only hurt the finished product. Delay uploading the patch a few months after you’re finished; it won’t affect us, I promise.
Are there going to be any swear words? What is the completion percentage? When will it be done? Will it be perfect? What if I don’t like Mother 3? Will you force me to play it? Can you tell me all the spoilers you can think of so I don’t have to play it?
Uh… If you are not sure of playing Mother 3, just don’t play it, and that’s all :S
shoot I meant delay uploading the translation a few months π
Brian: Nah, we’re not gonna do that.
Lawler: You forgot to ask about the hooks.
Lawler: Lucas is a robot sent from the past to kill Thomas, the true chosen one. It’s pretty crazy.
You guys are doing great. The more I see your updates the more my heart yearns for Mother 3. Not only are you doing us a great service doing this for free, but you’re actually building the hype up even more for those of us who haven’t played it yet. Sadly my Mother 3 game box sits atop my TV staring at me taunting me.
Btw, if anyone is interested (I would if I had the money right now) theres a Mother 3 Gameboy Micro on Ebay for 150 right now.
Miek: Please refrain from spoilers. I don’t like my box being kicked in.
keep up the awesome work…we’re counting on you! π
It’s so great to see more screenshots with the joyful hooks!
So isn’t that…kind of a lot of HP for Flint to have in that last shot? What level is he, out of curiosity?
I would love for the menu patch to be updated. It really would make me happy, and make many others happy as well.
And isn’t that what this project is all about?
You guys are doing awesome. Don’t stress about the Menu Patch – It was just a present for delaying the patch until after February 2008. Just focus on the main patch. We’ll be fine until the final is released.
You have infinite time and plenty of support. No need to worry over the little things – We’ll still be here either way.
miek use spoiler alert wtf!!!!!
yeah no spoilers without warning
OMG, Miek! I hayte u!!!1!
On topic: I love when you guys update. It lets us know that you haven’t quit, no matter how frustrating it can be. You haven’t given up hope, and these updates are taking us steps closer to Mother 3. Remember: You can do it!
I can’t tell if everyone is joking or not, but miek’s post was a 1000% joke π
Jeeves: I used debug stuff, so he’s probably around Level 99 in that pic.
Awww, so you mean we won’t get their HP to roll over past 999 in this one and have weird symbols for HP at the end of the game? π Though that might have been due to slight rock candy abuse, too…
Otherwise, we’d have to convince you to fix that bug in the translation, and make a nice little ’10’, ’11’, etc. tile to fit in there when the HP overflowed…
Another great update and about the SSBB dojo update I didnt really get what the spoiler was about so I think it is still safe for those who have not played Mother 3 yet. Cant wait to play and you guys are doing a great job, thanks
Yeah… Miek’s post was pretty far from a spoiler. It’s like me saying that in Super Mario Bros you fight the evil Fluffy Marshmallow Empire who uses special gumdrops to corrupt the local plant life.
Sorry, don’t know WHERE that came from π
Phil, I lol-ed at that one. π
Phil don’t spoil Super Mario Bros. for me!
Ooops, I’m so sorry! π
Dammit! Phil just spoiled the ancient NES game A Boy and His Blob!
king kong dies at the end of mother 3
Hmm, I actually was going to spoil A Boy and His Blob, but it didn’t post as apparently, the site went down before I could post, so either you were also reminded of A Boy and His Blob by Phil’s post as well, or my post did get posted and subsequently deleted. =P I vote the former, as I highly doubt anyone actually cares about A Boy and His Blob getting spoiled, with its pretty much nonexistant plot.
Anyone else thing the intro music sounds slightly like the Indiana Jones theme at first?
You know… what I described DOES sound suspiciously like the plot/final encounter in A Boy and His Blob (or at least what I could make of it). That was purely unintentional π
A REAL spoiler would be that Lucas’s last name is Skywalker, obviously.
dont be silly Lucas is his last name, his first name is George!
The spoiler jokes make me go π
Heh, I guess A Boy and His Blob has been sitting in the back of all of our minds for a decade or more, huh?
I’m surprised no one posted a spoiler of the Bible saying that it’s an epic story, but that it felt a little contrived when they brought Jesus back from the dead just to keep the prospects open for a sequel… π
leave jesus out of this, jerk
Bible 2: Jesus strikes back
lol,
okay PLEASEE take no offense from that, it was just a silly joke, we all love Jesus in some form or another
and Lucas is his middle name.. its George Lucas Picard (not sure of spelling for ‘Picard’)
All this fake spoiler goofy stuff is fun and all, but let’s not muck up the blog with this stuff. People might start making a habit out of it and that’d be no fun π
Plus… I don’t know just when someone will pop out a real spoiler! D:
Now this may be old but I thought I might make a suggestion. Uh, well if it is at all possible do not you believe that Orstiphant sounds more appealing to Ostrelephant? I can not put my finger on it, but perhaps it is related to Ostrelephants unbalanced name? Yes, you may ignore me, but I thought I wouldd just say something eventually.
Ostriphant huh? That actually sounds pretty good to me. Ostrelephant DOES sound kind of unblanced. Just over half of the Ostrich overtaken by the entire Elephant.
i think ostrelephant sounds more clever, unless you’re a seeing-eye player for a blind person and you don’t feel like saying it out loud. i think ostrelephant has a nice flow personally
Jerry “The King” Lawler: Alright, come clean. Are you really him?
I’m really looking forward to this. I tried playing in Japanese, but (despite not really reading many kanji), I found the lack of kanji made it hard to read . . .
Please continue your hard work.
You find the lack of kanji makes the game hard to read?! O_o Wow, usually, people would say the opposite… Kinda cool.
The most kana I know is the one for “no” and “n”. π I know a few more, but what does it matter- If I don’t know what the joined kana are saying, does it matter if I know what the kana stands for? :'(
Unless you’re a native speaker, fluent in the language, or already have a really large vocabulary and are used to how Japanese people talk (something you really gotta go to Japan to pick up on well), then kanji-less text is indeed much more difficult than kana+kanji text. It just seems like all-kana would be easier because you can pronounce each character, and to some basic extent, look up words in dictionaries, though the problem arises when trying to tell where a word starts and ends. That’s why kanji is helpful.
fact.
i mean, i’m just starting out learning japanese, but while most people in my class are complaining how much harder kanji is, i find it makes it a lot easier to read a sentence.
A little late but I knew he joking. I think coolguy knew too.
oops added to many 3’s to last post name. :}
