Testing is Swamp Bicycle
Testing is very nearly done now. I have one chapter left to go through, and the other testers are finishing up, too. I actually didn’t plan on making an update until the testing was done, but people were getting pretty antsy and there were too many comments in the last update to keep up with anymore. Luckily, no new major bugs have been found, just a typo or two and a few rare battle text lines needing fixing. They were all very simple to fix, of course.
This past week was very slow-going for me with real-life work, but pretty much everyone has stepped up to the plate in one way or another to help out. The testers are awesome and trying things I probably wouldn’t have even thought of. byuu’s been kind enough to help put the final patching program together for Windows and Linux, all while very sick. sblur’s been working on the Mac version. Jeff’s been around to answer testers’ questions. Very awesome teamwork. Send all free food and booze to them ๐
Testing will probably end in the next day or two. I still want demi to look through a few key lines to make them sound better, I set him up with all the stuff he needs for that. It will probably take him an hour or two, if he can find the time. If all goes well, there’ll be two updates left, one when everything is done and one with the patch for download.

Wow, that was quicker than what it was suppose to be, a month or so. Congratulations.
We’re already going to have a torrent, and we’ll already have mirrors up. We have like 1000 GB of bandwidth a month, so we’ll be fine, and we also have stuff in place in case the server strain gets too high.
So the patch will be released in another week or so? SWEET!

This game has easily required the most work of any unofficial translation project ever.
I might just have to buy a bunch of those 3 in 1 expansion pack things, so all of my friends can experience the awesomeness of Mother 3.

Sweet, only two more updates. Then we get to experience the game we never thought we would. Now I can feel like Nintendo was doing a good thing by even making a sequel, despite the hurdles we’ve got to get over to play it.
Apterous: That was the plan, some gbatemp folks offered to make a list, but I’m getting concerned that their list won’t be ready in time. For the most part, it should work on most everything, but some hardware might have trouble saving (happens with the original ROM too). We’ll have a tool for said people.
But if you want to know ahead of time, look around the flashcart topic on the msg board.

At this rate, the patch may be out before I get my flash cart. I didn’t put really fast shipping on it. Luckily the company is only two states away, so hopefully it’ll come on Monday, along with my copy of Mother 1 + 2. (Bought the Mother 3 deluxe box already when it was still available. Mother 3 translation on Mother 3 game boy Micro for the win!)
I tried the current build on the Mother 3 GBA Micro just now and whoa. I’ve only tried it on a really old first-generation DS all this time, and although it’s looked awesome on there, seeing it work on such a bright, clear screen is incredible. I’d take a pic, but I also don’t have a good camera.
I should try it in my NES GBA SP sometime.
Anyway, about halfway through this last chapter now. One of the testers doesn’t have internet access until late tomorrow, and he’s the one who’s looking into the strange text speed changing glitch. If we can’t find a way to reproduce it, then I’ll probably end the testing there. If we can find a way, I’ll fix it.
I can’t believe it.

I already tried out Tsukuyomi (the Linux ups patcher) – someone was kind enough to make a .ups menu patch out of the old .ips menu patch a while back for me. Everything worked great! byuu probably ought to put a .deb in his repo for people who don’t want to compile it, but other than that everything ought to be just swell from the Linux sector.
(psst: Sarsie wants you all to use Mednafen. Its input and sound latencies are really low, too!)

Hi, I’ve been lurking, but I have a question. I’m on the fence on getting an emulator for this so here’s my question: Do you have to sign up now to get the patch? Or will you have it for download after this so people can come back later to get the patch again (or if they found out about it after you finished)

Was Mother 3’s original japamese script as funny as you guys are trying to make it? I originally thought “of course!”, but then again, I heard Mother 2’s enemy names were pretty blah compared to EarthBound’s, so I just wanted to know from someone who at this stage, could probably recite the ENTIRE SCRIPT.
I’m pretty sure he saves it as an IPS patch. Also, amazing work! I have been waiting for quite the long time, and I can’t thank you guys enough!

@ls1silvia: IPS can’t patch roms bigger than 32MiB, so he’d probably use UPS for his snapshots (and indeed the finished patch).

Okay so I never post anything on the internet ever and I always see people posting rules about proper posts so if I’ve done something taboo I apologize but seriously I’ve been anticipating this release since early summer and I’m usually very adhd so I didn’t think I’d be able to hold out but I’ve patiently waited this whole time and I have to say the anticipation is killing me. The fact that there are still people out there that do this kind of thing just for the love of the game is a true testament to gamers everywhere. You guys seriously rock keep it up

Having lost my original GBA (along with its flash cart) during my last move, I actually picked up a PSP a couple weeks ago, with a major intent to play Mother 3 on it.

arashi, after you beat earthbound, you could ride your bike in the swamp, which was ordinarily impossible because you couldnt ride your bike with party members, and you had to have all 4 when you first enter the swamp

It seems like yesterday I stumbled on this site after ordering my copy of Mother 3, and squealing with joy. Now that it’s almost here I have been anxiously visiting the site hoping to see the post “PATCH HERE DL PLZ K THX” XD. I’ve been waiting so long for this game to be in English, even if I had beaten it already I’m still going to replay it because your translation is 100x better than the script ones I’ve seen floating around the net(plus no more looking up constantly to see wtf they’re saying XD). Kudos to you guys and I await the release XD.

Anyway thanks for the update. Swamp bicycle is only possible after you defeat giygas…. sounds like we may have this any day now.
Also I’m no expert on this subject but I’ve seen torrents being available (for tv shows for example) before the file is available. When it is the leecher has the torrent in their client ready to go without having to log on to the website where he got it from. If you made a torrent for the patch available now you may be able to offset the inevitable crash that will occur then 30k people try to log on and dl. Like I said I don’t know the specifics of it but it may be something to into. I’d love to wake up one morning, get the email, and having the patch in my downloads folder ready to go. Rather then cursing the blog cause the website is down.
So when you say testing wil be done in two or three days do you mean that when the patch will be up for download?

No, 2 or 3 days is when testing will end. I’ll make a post. We still need to finish the patcher programs, write some quick readmes/troubleshooting FAQ, get all the server stuff together, do the emails. Which is why I said there will be 2 updates left.
So, patch out in about a week then?

btw, I know I suck at answering people’s questions, but it’s getting pretty crazy trying to keep up with comments anymore, already there are like 200 here. Which is cool in itself, but I can’t keep up. So don’t feel bad if I answer someone else’s questions but not yours.

If i were estimating (though not knowing what is going on now in the testing and other phases) i’d say Thursday or Friday this week for a release? but thats a rough guess and probably out of line to assume.

Its been really amazing seeing this translation unfold, one update at a time. I plan to play through this game thoroughly after all this wait – talk to everyone, examine everything, and really savor all the glorious translation-ness.

Oh, and as for the text speed weirdness, are they sure they didn’t load a savestate where the speed was set differently or something? Because that doesn’t feel like the sort of thing that should even be possible unless there’s crazy memory corruption which should be moonside-ifying the game, not just changing text speed… Somehow, I imagine that they won’t be able to reproduce that bug again ๐

Itoi’s Love Child: I don’t see how torrenting something before it exists is possible; considering that torrents have a hash of the actual file in them so you can’t just put up the torrent and supply the actual file before it’s actually made.
I could be wrong though, but that’s not likely.

Lol i’m past tasting it. I’m digesting this whole article down my throat. CAN’T WAIT. 2-3 days of testing is perfect. My M3 should be arriving by Tuesday-Thursday (3 day weekend so it ships on Tues) which means there’s a slight chance of my M3 arriving on the same day as the release.. It’ll be better than Christmas morning. I walk home, open the mail box, find my M3 package there, I do my Lotto dance and run inside, I log on to my computer, and an MSN window pops up from my friend with a message saying “THE WAR AGAINST TRANSLATING IS OVER! THE PATCH IS RELEASED (10 Billion happy faces)” so I jump to the site A.S.A.P, download it, hook up my newly prepared DS+M3, and Voila.
Perfection Complete. M3 on my M3.
If only that happened. But I know one of them is going to arrive late. And I have a feeling it’s the M3. Which M3? Who knows OOO SUSPENSE.

I just hope Testing doesn’t reach the “Mummy After Giygas” stage. Thankfully Mato says he has everything backed up. I remember reading something about a catastrophy with the Star Ocean project. I have to play that sometime. I enjoyed SO2 but never beat it before I had to give it back to my friend.

Is there anywhere to buy a legal ROM of the game? It feels so wrong to steal such a great game.
Nintendo should at least sell the ROM online so its legal, and they would also get profit, and we have the joy of playing mother 3 in English. that sounds like a win win for them they get money for just making it available, and they wouldn’t have to put work in to translating it.

BTW, has anyone here seen the Earthbound reference in Kirby Super Star Ultra? In the Great Cave Offensive, you’re supposed to search for treasure, most of which is somehow nintendo-related. One of the treasures is a Mr. Saturn!!
SAM-E-BOI: The game is filled with quirky lines. The problem is, I’ve seen every line so much that I’m numb to it all. But judging from people’s reaction to the recent videos, I feel confident people will like and quote a lot of text from the game.

Someone asked how many email signups we got, it was over 30,000. Yes, I know that’s over 9,000, there’s no need to mention it. Some of the sm.net staff have been going through it all manually and weeding out the obviously fake stuff and jerk stuff. I checked our site stats and we hit 500,000 unique views (since the site’s opening) today. At about 5,000,000 total (not unique) views. About 18,000 or 19,000 menu patch dloads.
Anyway, mini-update, I finished the last chapter of testing, so now I’m waiting on one last tester who doesn’t get net access back until tonight/tomorrow. The next update will probably be monday or tuesday, and the patch update not long after.

Um… and neither do half the comments? ๐ The video is somewhat relevant, Mother 2 <.< just glitches before everyone completely dumps the game they can try.
HP: If you haven’t used it in a while, you might want to charge it, and then run the battery down, and charge it again. Repeat that a couple of times to work some life back into the battery. Rechargable batteries that don’t get used for a while appear to lose capacity, but a few charge/discharge cycles get them back in working order.
(I dug mine out, and the battery lasted less than an hour. A few cycles later, and it’s back up to 4-5 hours.)

I doubt it’ll be in the 6 digits. My guess is, a good number of people (mostly those of us that check the blog often) will download the patch and apply it ourselves. But I would expect websites that host GBA ROMs will put up the already patched into English ROM on their site, and I’d bet multiple people will create torrents with the patched ROM. So although a 6 figure number of people will likely play the translation, I really doubt that the # of downloads here will reflect it.
I’m glad you guys are putting in that little screen when you run the game, so people who haven’t been following the blog might understand how much work has been put into this.
It won’t be in the 6 digits, it will be in the 7-digits.
This is kind of a dumb question, but how many different places have you tried getting ROMs from? I mean, the rom from site X might be slightly different than the one from site or torrent Y, which might screw up the patch process.
Maybe I’m just being paranoid, maybe not, but you should try patching several different ROMs from several different places, just to be on the safe side.
If you’ve done this already, then just ignore my post. Either way, Good freaking job, Mato. I can’t wait for this to come out.

If the ROM has been properly dumped, it shouldn’t matter where you get it from. Jeffman has previously posted the MD5 checksum for the clean ROM on which they’ve been working, so it should be easy to check.

Engineer: The file being released is supposed to be a patch to the game file, as far as I’m aware. So you’ll need to patch the game, then find some way of playing the patched game file: be it emulator, flash cart + actual gba, or something else.

Well, I haven’t been commenting, or anything for that matter, on this site much, but:
1. If a problem is found after the patch is made, what will you guys do?
2. If the patch itself is screwed for everybody who downloads it, what will you do?
3. Are there any references to anything outside of Mother (But not outside of Starmen.net) that are going to or have been hidden in the translation?
4. There is no 4th question, DIE YOU NONEXISTENT QUESTION READING PEOPLE!
1. a future patch is pretty much a given, and is the norm with almost all major ROM translations. The fewer we have to do, the better though. People will be able to submit bug reports/typo and grammar reports. But if any new patches ARE made, they won’t come out for a long time.
2. then we’d find the problem asap, fix it, and post the new one. But I doubt that will happen very much.
3. Nothing that I can recall, no. No inside jokes or anything like that.

The tester got back not too long ago and said he wasn’t able to recreate the bug, so we’ll leave it at that. I doubt anyone will play it on Slow anyway ๐ But maybe we’ll mess with it for a future patch.
However, another tester did find a problem, it was a very weird naming screen bug, the screen where you type in your real name. It’s pretty weird, Jeff fixed it quickly, and I’m looking it over now just to make extra sure about it.

1.) Does the flow of text in the game carry any sort of cadence? The words in Earthbound have a certain flow to them that’s very natural.
2.) Has anyone discussed the possibility of a small documentary or anything to reveal the story behind this translation project?
Roan, what “totally legitimate” case could they have? He’s not doing anything illegal here. He’s releasing a hack for a game, not a copy of the ROM.

It’s the same thing as Star Ocean, Seiken Densetsu 3, Front Mission, etc. as well as fansubbing of popular animes – it’s never usually an issue unless it’s being marketed to the same area and then the only actions up to now have been cease and desist letters.
They never cared enough to bring the series to the states so why would they spend millions of dollars going after a few of their loyal fanbase, especially when they have already declared that they would end the project so long as Mother 3 was marketed to the states. It would be a huge financial loss in an already crumbling economy either way since they’ve already stated multiple times that they do not see M3 as “commercially viable” in the United States, which is true in the sense of what they’re trying to accomplish, therefore they are not losing any revenue to the fan translation.
Anywho…
Now we just have to wait for Nintendo to stop laughing and make an official announcement that Mother 3 will be brought to the US “at an undetermined date” for an “undetermined system, but probably the Virtualboy.” “It will have a new tennis format which we are very excited about. Mainstream!”…

Well sorry, a 14 year old who knows very little talking about law past midnight is not very credible.
Nintendo of Japan can sue on the grounds that they did not authorize this translation, plain and simple. As the copyright holder, they reserve the right to authorize any translations, and any translations not authorized by them are illegal. However, if I’m not mistaken on this point, even an illegally made translation is still copyright by the person or people who made it. So, it’s not like NoA could just take the patch and sell it without some kind of agreement with Mato et al.
But, it’s pretty unlikely that Nintendo would take any kind of action regarding the patch; most companies turn a blind eye to these things because it’s not causing them any lost revenue, and a lot of fan translation groups are very respectful toward the copyright holders. Many if not most groups only translate works that have been or likely will be passed over for domestic release, encourage support for the copyright holder, and ask that their translations be deleted in the event of an official release. So, Nintendo (and any other company for that matter) would just be shooting themselves in the foot if they tried to take any legal action against any fan translator, which is probably why nothing of the sort has happened to date . It wouldn’t be necessary to stop an unauthorized translation, and it would just unnecessarily incur the ire of fans.
On another note… I want to thank every single person who contributed to the project from the very bottom of my heart. Thank you SO very much! I really appreciate all the hard work and dedication that have gone into allowing us to experience Mother 3 in English, and especially, all the effort in making it the most polished and fantastic experience possible. I’m eagerly looking forward to playing through the patch, and I know I’ll relish every minute of it.

First, Has anyone here ever tried to mount any kind of international litigation? If you haven’t then kindly STFU.
Second, NoJ can’t sue because there’s no distribution of copyrighted content. Any such litigation would have to revolve around perceived loss of income. None of the crew here are making a dime (or even soliciting donations for the project) so there’s not even really an indirect way of inferring this is happening.
Third, In terms of “reverse engineering” things to get the original text, well, that’s a bit of a grey area but the copyrighted text itself is the collection of Japanese characters, not the message. And i’d argue this isn’t a verbatim translation per se but an appropriation/transliteration with sufficient individual worth so as to garner its own worth as copyright worthy material. For reference, databases or anthologies of stories can hold copyright in a similar fashion, not because the content is novel but the presentation and work involved in issuing it under a new format/medium/collection is significant.
Hope the people working on this don’t feel put off by randoms saying they’re going to get thrown in the legal frying pan. No one’s going to sue. Everybody loves Mato and Co. ;D

Honestly, I can’t think of a reason why Nintendo would want to sue… Think about it: Right now there are:
– A Japanese version of the game for sale
– People buying the Japanese version
– People pirating the Japanese version
– People not buying the Japanese version
Once Mato releases his patch, there will be:
– A Japanese version of the game for sale
– People buying the Japanese version
– People pirating the Japanese version
– People not buying the Japanese version
– People who are either buying or pirating the Japanese version to apply a non-official patch on it to play it in English.
From Nintendo’s point of view:
– Sales of the Japanese version might have been driven a little by people willing to purchase the Japanese version to rip it themselves and patch the ROM (aka more sales)
– Pirates aren’t customers to start with, so if they pirate it to play it in Japanese or pirate it to patch it to play it in English, either way, it was never a potential income.
– Suing costs money. LOTS of money.

Quite honestly No law suits can be filled (unless the Japanese ROM whas downloaded from some source instead of dumped).
Truth is, dumping a ROM is not illegal. Companies can lay claim to the contects of the game but not really the media format that it ends up on. Good case of this is the black NES games, you know the ones. Nintendo had a heart attack about that back in the day, but the developer of those games cracked the code and was able to make many games for the NES.
Another good example is Goldeneye. Think about how many times Goldeneye has been re-created of the PC, it’s crazy.
Fact of the matter, this is not the game. This is a patch for the game, a seperate peice of software all together.
The best Nintendo could try to do at this point is to cock block the team by droping an English copy first.
But they can’t.

Well for the two years time that this thing has gone public, no one from NOA has made a move to stop this project as far as I know. I’ve been following it all intently for the time it has been under construction.
All I’m saying is that NOA had their chance to stop it. 2 years, and they didn’t.
@Forgotten Man: I actually thought about that soon after I posted that. And I as well would love to have all three MOTHER games with me on my DS. But that’s probably why I would buy three seperate flash carts. Sure it may be an added minute of switching carts, but that hardly seems like a reason to put Mato through a seemingly pointless task: translating two games that are already translated. Just get ’em individualy. And plus M1+2’s sound quality hurts poor orpahn children.

The real question is whether it would be more efficient to hack Mother 1+2 or just improve the snes emulators on ds and psp.
For Earthbound “Zero” or Earthbound on the Go, I would rather have the native GBA version than have to fiddle around with NES or SNES emulation. I understand that they are pretty low on any hacker/translator’s radar since both are available in English to whomever really wants them, but there’s definitely reason to want the GBA version in English as well.

This project is in the crear because they are not re-making the game or any of its rights. They are making a seperate program. The patch is a seperate entity. How you intend to use it is your business.
If this was a book that was re-writen in English and release on the web, yeah you got a case. If it was a moive that someone dubbed the audio and released it on the web, yeah you got a case.
If this were a pursuable case, Mato and team would have to translate it and release the whole game in it’s translated form.
But it’s smart you see. Make something that has the potential but no will. This is an “as you like it” program.
I can honestly say I’m extremely happy about this. When I first heard Mother 3 was Japan only, I almost cried. Then I randomly found this one day through Google and was like “=D!”. I hold you guys in the highest regards for doing something amazing, and sticking to it. Now we just need to get Nintendo to put EB on the VC, and everything shall be set XD Kudos all around. While Wikipedia isn’t exactly something you’d cite in a scholarly publication, here’s a snippet from them on the subject:

Okay, here I was about to explain why it is illegal, when I started thinking it over and realized my point was not that valid. Anyways, here’s what I know:
1. All content of the game, including the script, is copyrighted by Nintendo.
2. The scope of the copyright law extends to derivitive works.
3. An English translation of the Japanese script is a derivitive work.
4. So for the patch to be illegal, the English translation of the Japanese script would have to be partially included in certain parts of the patch.
After a bit of thinking, though, I don’t believe the patch ends up being illegal. .ups is a binary XOR of the file. Unlike .ips, it doesn’t even tell the new setting for a bit; it just tells which bits change. The patch in this format could not even imply or suggest the script.
But if .ips really does violate copyright while .ups doesn’t, that’s one big fat loophole that shouldn’t exist. Quite frankly, any patch should count just as much as a case of copyright infringement as an actual modified ROM would; a derivitive work should count as a derivitive work, regardless of how it’s stored and distributed. It’s intellectual property; the medium should not make a difference.

Good. If all you have to worry about is one simply naming screen thingy that you’ve already fixed, all should be well from here on out except maybe typos and there can’t even be too many of those. Though you could always grep for to/too/two, their/they’re/there and make sure that you always use the right word if you want something else to do. After all, you do have the whole script in text form. Can check for doubled words, too (having the at the end of the line and again at the start of the next is surprisingly common and hard to spot).

First of all I would like to thank Tomato, Jeffman, Byuu, Demi, Gideon Z, and everyone else who has helped bring this fan translation to fruition. I have been watching the Mother 3 English translation from it’s beginnings, over two years ago, at Mother3.org.
I also have something to say to all of the commenters who seem to refuse to listen to Mato’s polite suggestions to please leave the comments strictly Mother 3 related. Do you want the same thing that happened to the Persona 2 Innocent Sin translation to happen to Mother 3? (Ex. http://tsumi.wordpress.com/ )
Gemini has officially delayed the translation because of ridiculous people who just can’t seem to listen and follow rules. Even though I HIGHLY doubt that Tomato would react in the same way as Gemini. Mato is too professional in my opinion to do something like that. I’m gonna celebrate the patch’s release date like a holiday anyways, if not to make up for Junior ditch day, a tradition I was not aware that our school – which ranked #4 among school districts in the Capital District in 1996 – took part in.
So there I am in my first block class, in Honors Precalc, with 2 classmates, one teacher, and 17 empty desks. A heads-up would’ve been nice.

And as for whether Christian’s should play this game, I am a Christian, and I even played the original Final Fantasy Tactics (MAN was that an offensive game or what?) but I still play it because, let’s face it, it’s a fun game.

Wait, religion matters when you play video games? Take it all with a grain of salt and it shouldn’t. I mean really, if a video game insults your beliefs or changes who you are, then something’s wrong. I’m a Christian, too. It doesn’t mean I don’t love Doom or Final Fantasy as much as the next guy. Heck, does it mean anything when you’re just trying to get to the next level in a form of entertainment?
Either way, this game deserves a look from anyone who loves RPGs or the Mother series, now more than ever. And I can’t wait ’til the end of the week! ๐ I hope you think it was all worth it in the end, Mato!

I’ve been quietly following this translation since I came arcoss the site a year and a half ago. Since then, I lost the ability to play this game, but encouraged a few of my friends (both online and off) to play this game once you guys release the patch.
I guess it’s about time to inform them of the news.

I just had a nightmare where the next update finally came out with a link to download the patch, and when I clicked on it, a page opened which said “You all were trolled”. It got me very upset.
Anyways, congrats you guys, I originally thought this would take forever and eventually be cancelled since it was so good to be true. I’m glad I was wrong.

i remember when i first heard m3 drop all those years ago and then started to wait. Then i started to lose my patience then started praying that someone would translate it. then i saw the two projects. then i saw the two become one. It was amazing. Thanks everyone for putting this out for all of us.
