All Hacking Complete
(unless crazy bugs decide to show up in the next few weeks, that is, though it’s unlikely)
After some enlightenment, I managed to fix and finish the sprite hacking routine earlier today. It now runs at a fast speed, has no weird graphical lag or distortion, and is rock-solid and 100% professional-looking. So that means we can cross the final hack off the to-do list.
Right after I fixed the sprite text, we noticed that the game would freeze during the ending. It was a pesky bug, but we finally fixed it, it was something that crept in late last night. While I was at it, I also betterfied the fix for this old bug, which is nice.
There’ve been so many pics and videos that there’s not too much more to show now, but I recorded one thing real quick showing a bunch of different systems that had to be hacked over the past year. You can see them all working in harmony together and looking nice and professional. Nothing spoilery, don’t worry.
Now that the hacking’s pretty much done (some miniscule things remain which may not be worth bothering with), that just leaves the testing phase. It’ll probably start sometime this weekend, and before people start asking, we don’t need help testing. The testing will be done internally for several weeks.
It’s also important to clarify that testing doesn’t mean “play through and have fun”, it means playing stuff over and over, trying to break things, analyzing every little detail, stuff like that. It’s NOT fun. But this way the game will be less likely to freeze/crash/act stupid when the patch is released to the public. Some last-minute polish will be going on during the testing phase too.
I don’t know how updates will be during the testing, it may just be a weekly thing saying we’re alive and well, but if we find stuff and fix it, I’ll mention that quickly.

There’s no ETA, we won’t know for sure until probably days/a week or so before it’s out. It all depends on what bugs, if any, we encounter. Sooner would be better of course.

I remember coming across this translation effort when it was in its infancy. I loved the idea of it, but I wondered how long it would take for it to grind to a standstill. Not to say that I didn’t have faith in you guys, but these fan-tanslation projects always seem to lose their steam. This one, however, has not. For that I am very grateful.
I know there is still work to be done, but now the greatest hurdles are behind. To all of those involved in this grand endeavour, I salute and thank you all. You have done a great service in the name of translating art for people that would not have been able to understand it otherwise. You improve the human condition. All of you, be proud. You are, in a sense, heroes, and not only to EarthBound/MOTHER fans, but to anyone interested in creative works.

A year and a half ago, I wasn’t sure this project was ever going to be completed by anyone. You’ve really put your heart into it, and from what I’ve seen, it shows.
I’m also glad to know that you’re taking your time on playtesting it. I’ve waited a long time for this game, waiting a little longer for something this beautiful isn’t that hard.

Mato, I hate to be this guy, but I noticed a tiny bug in the video and wanted to make sure you were aware of it. I know you’ve spent hours and hours playing the game, so anything I notice, you’ve probably seen weeks ago, but what the hell, just in case:

At about 1:32-1:35 in the video there’s a stray pixel hanging about in the item description; as you can see in that picture, it appears to come from that first “e” in “Restores”. In the video, it appears to fix itself a moment later; maybe that’s your fix for it in action? I don’t know. Sorry for being this guy. Super excited for the release, my thanks to you and everyone else for your hard work.

Those are video compression artifacts – the original video had some level of compression, and Youtube added some, though I assume it’s the former that causes it. I’ve been a lurker on this blog since around December and as a huge, huge, huge fan of Earthbound, (bought the thing when it came out, I still have the huge box tucked away safely in my closet.) I just want to thank you, Mato, and the entire translation team for this project. I remember when I first heard about Mother 3 and how excited I was, only to find that it wasn’t being localized. But when I found this blog (which I’ve had bookmarked and check every single day) I became ecstatic about this. I mean it when I am grateful for all the work you guys put into this. I’m really looking forward to playing this game in English. I haven’t even played it in Japanese! And I’ve tried my best to ignore Brawl and potential spoiler devices just so I can play this game with a virgin mind as I did with Earthbound.

This is amazing. I’ve been following the Mother 3 translation project for months now and to see it finally getting near completion…well, I think I’m getting misty-eyed. A world of win goes to Mato, Jeffman, and the entire team. =D

Mato I love you in the same kind of way I love drinking beer on the beach. I know; its a pretty strong statement to make. Watching that video brought back so much nostalgia from playing Earthbound for the first time, and this patch is my most anticipated video game release this fall.

wow mato, the funny thing is, if you actually took donations to this entire project, you would probably be caught up in the hugest legal battle with Nintendo right now.
Everyone loves you for taking the time out of your hectic life to give a tried and true fan base the translation they deserve for a fantastic game.
You honestly should be running some high up branch of Nintendo for doing this. The amount of money you could have made for technically doing this for free if you accepted donations if outrageous. Of course doing so would have drawn so much unwanted attention so I understand why you asked for no donations.

The “the” glitch hasn’t happened at all in the few hours of playing I’ve done since I made the fix yesterday. I’m hoping that we’ll find out more during testing. I’m much much happier with it now, at least.

Please excuse me if I have missed this somewhere, but as you move into the final phase, have you determined how the final patch will actually be used? If the game is to be played on the computer, what emulator is recommended and what patching program should be used? Will it be possible to apply the patch to a physical copy of the game, and if so, how? If it can be done, I’m not opposed to buying the actual cartridge and whatever is needed to transfer the patch on to it; but I would prefer to have whatever I need by the time the patch is ready so I don’t have to go out and get it after the patch is already available.

Lemmy Koopa: a guide with all of those questions answered and more will be released after the patch is released. The patch is intended to work on both ROMs and actual cartridges (with an extra piece of hardware to do the patching, of course).

How you should get ready for now is by download yourself a working Mother 3 ROM. It shouldn’t be too hard to find. It should be around 32 MB (but the file will probably be compressed). I THINK applying the patch is extremely easy to do, and doesn’t require additional software.
But yeah, I recommend you do that. ๐
And also, I think it’s NOT recommended that you apply it into a GBA cartridge ’cause the hardware you need is expensive and I remember it was mentioned that it may or may not work… I don’t recall very well, maybe someone else can confirm.

Uh, Lemmy, as for the type of emulator: I don’t know how this would go with the patch, but for just the ROM I had difficulty with Boycott Advance. It crashed before it even reached the title screen. VisualBoy Advance seemed to run smoothly, though.

The way the post are coming in on this board makes me think about Earthbound so much. It’s like Mato Just defeated Giygas and he’s on his journey home, with all the characters appearing to congratulate him on his job and to get in a few last lines. The games not quite over, but the boss is defeated, and the rest of the game becomes a scenic walk, reminding you of all the hardships you went thru on your epic journey. Now I’m so excited I may just have to go back and play Earthbound again. Dang, this will be the third time since I’ve started keeping track of the Mother3 translation process. My thanks go out to you Mato and crew.

Do you remember how your journey began with someone pounding at your door? It was a Japanese Mother 3 ROM, the worst game to hack in your neighborhood, who knocked on your door that fateful night.
On your way you have hacked, thought, and fought. Yet, through all this you have not lost your courage. You have grown steadily stronger, though you have experienced the pain of hacking many times.
You are no longer alone in your adventure. Reidman,who is steadfast, kind, and even pretty, is always at your side. Jeffman is with you as well. Though he is timid, he came from a distant land to help you. Mato, as you certainly know by now, you are not a regular tomato. You have an awesome destiny to fulfill.
The journey from this point will be long, and it will be more difficult than anything you have undergone to this point. Yet I know you will be alright. When fans battle Nintendo, which side do you believe wins? Do you have faith that fans are triumphant?

When the final patch comes out and the spoilers are over, we should try to figure out the similiarities and differences between EB 64! I recognized an important scene where they’re hanging on to a plane, but it’s supposed to be with Kumatora and not flint. Something tells me that Flint would have been in brawl if EB 64 came out.

This has probably been answered before, but with all the reprogramming and translation, will the patch increase the size of the original .gba file above 32MB? If so, by approximately how much?
The reason why I ask is because my flash cart, like a good deal of old GBA flash carts, has a maximum storage of 32MB (256 Megabits), and I need to know if I need to find and purchase a new one to compensate.

No, 256Mb is the max size possible for GBA games. Somehow Mato has found a way to put in all the new info without increasing the file size. I don’t know anything about ROM hacking.

this guy has put a ridiculous amount of time into doing this with no pay, so be happy with what you’re getting (which looks perfect to me anyway, when I watch the youtube video I feel like I’m watching an official Nintendo translation)
By “miniscule things”, I really do mean miniscule. There’s a bug in the original game, for example. To see it for yourself, go to the naming screen at the start of the game. Put the cursor at the very top-right. Press up. Then press right. Instead of going to the “don’t care” option, it will go to one of the other options.
The miniscule stuff I’m talking about is related to tiny things like that. Stuff people probably won’t notice and probably isn’t worth messing with right now. Especially since I *need* to get this project off my plate now.

We even found unused graphics of possible signs they might’ve had planned for it instead.
Normally, updates got around 200 comments after 3-5 days. This one got over 350 in less then 2 days.
The reason is obvious, of course.
The only thing I’m scared about is whether or not this game will be bowdlerized by the translation team. Hopefully not, but then again, I know nothing about how the people working on the Mother 3 translation project are.
All jokes in the game were changed to fart jokes, and I changed Lucas to Mario and Boney to Yoshi.

Actually, when the final patch comes out, there will be about 10 comments, complaining that they can’t find a ROM, in the first 20-30 hours, and then 5000, as people finish playing. I’m not going to wait long enough to post “Thank you” before I start playing. Unless the server is swamped and takes about 5 minutes to download the patch. Ok, nevermind. Ignore this post.

The boxes will always have a minimum width. Once names get sort of long, the game’s programmers have it acting strangely, giving an odd bit of extra space, but really long names are rare.

Congratulations on finishing all of the hacking and moving onto the testing phase. There’s a question though I’d like to ask.
If possible, would you be willing to test a hard patch of the game on the Wii using the latest VBA Emulator on the Homebrew Channel? I am not completely sure if it will save or not. They use version 1.7.2 of VBA as well, but I don’t think that would make much of a difference when compared to 1.8.3. I hope that you would test it out for people like me who use Homebrew Applications on the Wii.

I’m pretty sure most trackers will keep a count of how many downloads there have been of a torrent, so if you were so inclined you could just check site downloads + torrent downloads and get your magic number.

We’ve been looking into various ways of doing stuff. We’re currently planning to have a normal link to dload from and a torrent. We’re also planning measures to help make sure the site doesn’t die.
Has anything been planned on how this is all going to be distributed? Just from all the responses to this latest update, it looks like this site is gonna be as accessible as GamePolitics was when Jack Thompson’s disbarment hit the news. Maybe an email script should be set up or something? We definitely wouldn’t want to try and come here to download the patch and find the site down because of too many requests!

This really is the best fan translation effort I’ve ever seen.
Other fan translations I’ve followed have taken so long, and some of them aren’t even done yet, so it’s refreshing to see one with so much love around it to propel it forward.

For those who are curious/interested, testing began yesterday and two bugs did get found. They’re nothing very major and should only take a couple hours to fix, when I can find the time. It always comes down to time, blargh.
The one on the left is just something related to the status icon code with the sprite text routine, it shouldn’t be too hard, just annoying. I thought I had fully fixed that.
The second one is really weird. Apparently, if certain item descriptions are displayed in the main menu, then if you go out and do the Sleep Mode option, the message about how to get it out of Sleep Mode won’t print fully. What’s weird is that only certain item descriptions will cause this problem, what’s weirder is how the hey the main menu sprite routine has anything to do with this message. This message does use sprite text, but it uses its own code.
Anyway, two minor things that shouldn’t take long to fix. No major bugs so far, which is good news ๐
Someone also caught a simple grammar typo. Which is cool, because it was only one ๐
Are you using visual basic to make your tools?
I wonder how you can tell how long a fix will take. I can understand the left one being easy to fix because it sounds like you know exactly what’s wrong and all, but the way you describe the right one it sounds like it’s a mystery to everyone, but you still say it’ll take a short time to fix.
I mean, that’s totally awesome, I’m impressed and all, I just find it strange. =P

Hey Mato couldn’t you just cheat and by pass the sprite text routine and hard code the message like Jeffman did for the credits? I know I’m probably making a ton of assumptions that are all false in making that statement, so feel free to pwn me if need be.
I can say it because 1. I’ve had enough hack experience on this ROM and 2. figuring out where to start hacking from is often the hardest part, but it will be easy to know where to start from in this case.
Vagn: Why is it people want to cheat every time I post a bug? If we had cheated every step of the way, the thing would look like an inside-out creepy monster man and act just as bad.
Besides, who’s to say prewelded text there wouldn’t fall victim in some cases? Better to make a real fix.
Mato, if you find a simple bug and fix it, wouldn’t you have to re-test everything from the beginning to make sure your fix didn’t disrupt something else? I’m not too great with hacking (except when I’m sick..hahaha…). But from what you’ve been through all this time, it seems like alot of fixes has a type of butterfly effect on the rest of the project.
Which is why testing will take several weeks ๐
Ehh… That is a good question. I just thought it may be easier to go that route instead of chasing down a tone of asm code; but I understand it probably is frustrating to have people shout suggestions at you with no knowledge of whats going on. So I guess I just thought it might be an easier fix without affecting the end result.

Ugh, yeah, that’s why I never bought a GBA SP. The L and R buttons seemed simply horrible, plus it doesn’t feel very balanced when you hold it.
Much love for the GB Micro though. Well, aside from the faceplate (feels flimsy) and the lack of backward compatibility, but that’s why I got into flashcarts (emulation of Game Boy and NES!).

Just curious but will there be a post of how much time was spent on this project, not necessarily how long it took but the time it took to hack, translate, and test?

Actually, my SP got wet once when it was pouring rain, and the L and R buttons don’t always respond. Same for my DS Lite.
Also, Mato, can you eat my nightmares? I want to keep my sanity intact for at least 5 more decades. Lol.
My SP’s L and R buttons got some sort of sand stuck inside, but this isn’t the place to discuss it. Only an unknown amount of time left! Yay!

I’m glad that the jokes are done by a fan translation team. I remember from Mother 2 that some content was changed, such as the Bar being changed to a Cafe and the Mayor of Onett’s name being changed.
By the way Mato, could you show me a list of the preset names to choose from at the name selection screen?

Mato said those bugs would take a couple of hours to fix, not “another week”. Stop blowing things out of proportion.
I haven’t had any time to do any testing or bugfixing myself yet. I’ll either do mini-updates as I do fix them, or I’ll save it all for a real update.
No new bugs or issues have been reported at all today.

Really though, it’s good to hear no new bugs have come up. Less bugs means less strain for you, and less time until the translation. :p
And out of curiosity, what other games have you translated both officially and fan translations? Never payed attention to a fan translation before, as I got into these AFTER all the ones I wanted were out. :p

I’ve been following the translation of this game since before you guys even jumped into it, feels almost surreal that the thing’s nearly done now. I remember first reading that another translation effort had started over here, and my reaction was along the lines of “Holy crap, they got Tomato on this? That’s damn perfect, a translator who’s most definitely what appears to be one of the biggest Mother fans possible.” I never would have guessed that I had actually underestimated your dedication and ability by thinking you were the perfect one for a project like this.
You and Jeffman are both the kings of awesome. Unless one of you wants to be a queen. Or both. I have no idea how these things work anymore.

Biiaru: I dunno, I’m too lazy to set up my Gamecube, definitely don’t have the time anytime soon to play through all of Chapter 1 either. I don’t want to make videos of too much either, since I don’t want people to watch the videos and then skip playing the game (this is actually pretty common I realized). Plus I don’t want to give away too much early-game stuff ๐
If Block 0 was like Giygas then that means the testing phase is like the happy ending sequence. I’ve enjoyed watching the progress. When I first started closely following (back when the first bit of major progress was made, as far as I saw) back in January, I never would’ve thought this patch would be ready this year. Even when you were facing Block 0 I was thinking “I bet it’ll be done around Thanksgiving” and now it looks like it will be ready around Halloween. You’ve done an awesome job and I’m glad to have been here for it! Even if all I did was annoy the tomato juice out of you. ๐

Mato: Maybe you could ask one of your testers to do it for you? I’d tend to think it’d rather get more people excited to play the game, rather than make them not want to.
Make sure you don’t lose to the Shattered Man, or else all of your progress thusfar will be for naught!

my GF the other day was replaying EarthBound, & she was in the starmen base & she got 2 swords in less than 5 minutes!!!! XDDD

Yeah, there are rare items. They’re 3% items though, so they’re not quite as crazy as 1/128 items, but Mother 3 also doesn’t have instant wins, so it sort of balances out I guess.
Ugh…. thank god getting sword of kings on an emu isn’t bad but it sure was a pain on the ol’ snes.
Man, no instant wins? Is that because of some sort of fundamental change to the battle system?

I’m sorta trying to get through Earthbound Zero and some of the things (missing) in it annoy the crap out of me.
It doesn’t have EB’s instant wins, but you can still skip weak enemies by running into them. You don’t get exp or anything though.

A video of someone playing through Chapter 1 of Mother 3 would give away a major spoiler. I’d hate for someone’s M3 experience to be ruined by seeing that before actually playing the game.

It’s probably Kid Icarus. Where’d you get that list anyways? Earthbound (or Mother) isn’t an old franchise. Mother 3 came out two years ago.

Lemon Pie, that’s just a list of what Sconner wants. You’re right about Earthbound no longer being an old franchise, though. Nintendo includes NoJ, and I doubt that kind of an announcement would be made while just ignoring the games released by the main branch of all of Nintendo.

Wow… This is amazing. It’s funny, actually, it being this close to done. This seemed like one of those things where even though you could practically feel the progress, and you come to the site constantly, but since you have been waiting for so long you don’t ever truly believe it is ever going to be finished. I mean, you KNOW it’s going to be finished, but can’t quite see it happening. I am doing a terrible job explaining this. Anyone know what I am talking about?
On a side note, what would you say are the chances of this working on the PSP GBA emulator GPSP(not the kai version)? Sorry if this has already been answered, or if this is a the wrong place.

yeah there’s gonna be a counter but he’s not gonna make it viewable to the public because some silly folks may download it over and over just to get the counter up, and he wants it as accurate as possible…

Though to be honest…I don’t think I’m the only one thinking that an open beta would be a bad idea.
Yeah, I hated that about 1/128 items. Would you believe that, right after I spent hours getting a Sword of Kings on my first playthrough, I got a _SECOND_ damn sword right after that? :-/
And you can’t get rid of it. You CAN’T drop the useless thing. You have to let it eat one of your Escargot slots (and yes, I had that full because I was saving truffles and whatnot… what can I say? I’m a packrat).
If I ever get around to coding the game in my mind, I’ll make it smarter than that ๐
@A Fan: I wouldn’t be so depressed about it if I were you, slaughtering all those Starmen Supers is good EXP. That’s what kept me going when I was after the 1/128 items, and after that I just plowed through everything like Yukari’s Train (yes, I’m a Touhou fan). In the end, it was well worth it for me. Granted having a second sword is a drag, but that’s what you get for packing Truffles (I don’t think I ever used Truffles).
@Mato: I’ve been a big fan of yours ever since I saw that this project was underway a few months back. No word I can type can express my gratitude. Me and the members of (one of) my forums are on the edge of our seats in anticipation; I extend their best wishes as well as my own to you and your development/testing team. Take as much time as you must to make it as perfect as you can. And (need I say it?) always remember to save backups of your work to safe places, such as removable disks.

Hmmm, I never had that trouble of getting two Sword of Kings, but I know if I ever did. I’d just make Poo dual weild them so he’d kick twice as much butt as usual.
