Testing Finishes, Patch This Week
The patch will be out at the end of this week.
Testing’s pretty much over now. Some bugs did turn up over the last few days, but they were all minor and quickly remedied. Some really hard-to-spot typos were also found and fixed.
The program patchers are now nearly finished. There’ll be one for Macs, Windows, and Linux. We designed them to be extremely easy to use, since people had lots of trouble with the old menu patch. The Linux version was compiled under Ubuntu, I don’t know if it’ll work with other flavors or not, but if it doesn’t, you can probably compile byuu’s tsukuyomi UPS patcher to do things manually.
I’m waiting on a few last lines from demi, but lots of tedious, final stuff is being done in the meantime, like the readme, the troubleshooting/faq page, prepping the server, some other things you’ll see later. This will be the last update before the patch is out.
Before the patch is released, you might want to get everything ready ahead of time. You’ll of course need the Japanese ROM, which we can’t provide. You might want to hunt that down now, if you have the time.
You might also want to find yourself a GBA emulator ahead of time and get it set up. I don’t know a whole lot about what emulators exist on each OS, but I do recommend VBA-M for those who can run it. It’s a recent project and superior to the old VBA, which hasn’t been updated in years. The VBA-M project site is here, and you’ll want to get the most recent compiled version here. Of course, regular old VBA works too, but VBA-M is great.
Mac users, you may have trouble saving your game. The troubleshooting guide and the readme will list several ways to fix this. Your best bet might be to try VBA 1.7.2 rather than VBA 1.7.4. Fiddle around with the preferences too, see if changing the flash save size works. I’m telling you this now, because this will probably be the #1 problem report we get once the patch is released. So, if you have the time, try out the Japanese ROM and see if you can get your emulator to save.
For people wanting to play the game on actual hardware, see this thread. I was counting on some gbatemp people to help provide a detailed guide about flash carts/cards, but it looks like it’s not going to happen. So someone on the forum compiled this quick and handy list. I don’t know the first thing about this stuff, so I can’t answer your questions. Also, just like with ROMs, I don’t want to point people to specific places to acquire this hardware. Some simple searching should get you what you want, though.
(EDIT: The following list isn’t complete, there are probably many other things that will work. The list below is just a list of what was confirmed to work in the above forum thread.)

- EZ-Flash IV (note: the “Compact” version will not work)
- EZ-Flash 3-in-1 (requires a slot-1 cart)
- eLink 1Gbit
- G6 Lite
- M3 SD
- EFA Linker
- Flash2Advance Ultra
Slot 1 (DS) carts:
(These all require a GBA expansion, such as the EZ-Flash 3-in-1, to play GBA games.)
- M3 DS Real
- CycloDS
- EZ-Flash V
- R4 DS
If you have questions about flash cart stuff, please see the forum thread I linked to above. That’s where you’ll find people in the know.
I gotta say though, the game looks absolutely great on actual hardware. It’s nice on emulators, but the real deal is… wow. Here are some pics, though they’re not great examples: GBA Micro 1, GBA Micro 2. Certain things in the game - particularly the musical battle combo system - will lag with emulators, just because of how emulators work. But actual hardware doesn’t have that problem. You can probably get accustomed to your emulator’s lag with time, though.
Anyway, all that aside, I saw that someone started a playthrough of EarthBound to kind of commemorate the patch coming out. That sounds like a really cool idea. I highly recommend it

Anyway, after thirteen some years of waiting for a sequel to my childhood favorite It’s hard to believe I’ll be playing this game by the end of the week. I’m also glad this game got picked up by a pro rather than some amateur group.

About the PSP: I don’t have one so I couldn’t test it out, and Exophase was busy and reluctant to test it on his old code that he isn’t going to update anymore (I think he’s planning a rewrite or something). But people say they played through the Japanese version of M3 on the PSP fine, so you’ll almost certainly be able to play the translation on the PSP too. But I guess we’ll find out for super sure before too long

Yes, patch appliers will come with the patch. It will be very straightforward, and there will also be clear instructions for those who are still confused.
I read right over it somehow, but Byuu’s Patcher Program is using my fav Username. Coincidence? Probably not as it’s a popular title and name. But still feels nice.

Congratulations, Mato and the translation team! After spending 4-5 years in the videogame industry, I can only imagine the amount of pain you guys had to go through to get here. And of course, dealing with the translation day in, day out for months on end can turn you numb to the project. Kudos to you guys for sticking with a task you never even really had to commit to.
As a fan of Earthbound/Mother, all I can really do is say thanks for all the hard work you’ve put in to the translation of the game. Without your efforts, none of us non-Japanese speaking/reading people could enjoy a game that should have rightfully been translated to English (and other languages) from the get go.
And before I go, I have to agree, the game looks fabulous on the hardware! It looks like a legit US release version of Earthbound 2. That has to be a huge thrill for you guys!

The Japanese one works flawlessly on Exophase’s last version of GPsp for PSP, and the other version of GPsp that if anyone used, he’d hunt down. I’m pretty sure that the patched English version will work fine with GPsp since the Japanese version seems to work.
As for the Game Boy Micro pics, holy crap. That actually looks like something Nintendo did. I mean, wow.
wow, hi everybody. I’m a first time poster, but a long time watcher. Believe it or not I’ve watched this from the beginning to end because of my great passion for the Earthbound series, and finding an english version of the game.
Mato, and to all who have helped majorly I am greatly appreciative in what you have done for the Earthbound community. It saddens me that I remained a lurker and not an active poster all this time. Feels like i’ve missed out on a huge chunk of this project by not doing that alone.

There is certainly something to be said for a fanbase that is strong enough to spearhead and complete an immensely difficult project with no funding and little incentive besides personal gratification.

Triple10X: You might want to ask on this thread. But I *think* the readmes for the compiles should explain what to do. You might have to upgrade to the latest version of DirectX, there’s an .exe on there that will do the update for you if you need it.
Sax: Actually, to help save my sanity and speed up the patch’s release, I decided I’d tone down my translation notes (I already finished them, they’re just a few paragraphs) in the readme. I had intended for there to be really detailed stuff, but I don’t have time, and I’d rather have the patch out sooner. So instead, I think I’ll do the detailed notes online somewhere (maybe here), kind of almost like a commentary sort of thing. That way I can use pics/links/videos to help explain stuff. And that’ll give me more time to mention more stuff. So there might still be stuff to come and see, if you’re into knowing those kinds of details and such.

It’s great that EZ Flash IV works with it, since that was the one I was planning to buy, now, I just have to buy it.
Are you guys planning on releasing the source code for your patcher, or a description of the patch format? I’d be more than glad to write up a cross-platform Ruby patcher, to alleviate any works-on-whose-system concerns.
The Linux build shouldn’t have a problem working on non-Ubuntu systems, though. The only significant concerns would be the architectures it’s built for and the GUI library it utilizes. 64-bit Linux users shouldn’t have a problem running a 32-bit binary, and just about any modern Linux distro has available all the resources you’d need to run any type of GUI, so I doubt there will be any issues. And all that aside, there’s still the option of running the Windows version under Wine.
Cool, you used my list of flash carts. Sorry it’s a little barren, but I only have the information from the GBA/DS flash cart thread to go on. At any rate, I’m glad to be of help.

It would really suck, if all Mato was actually doing was post pictures of translated dialouge, and not hacking. Or if the team did hack, but they programmed it to ahve a big rick roll in it. That would suck.

Sabaal: Actually, the UPS patch format is fully documented, so if you want to write your own patch application for it, you’re free to. I’m not sure where byuu posted the specs for the format, but check out byuu.org and look around in his programming section. You can probably just compile his tsukuyomi (his UPS utility) code for whatever platform you need. But I don’t know for sure. But check it out if you’re interested.

I can combo better on emulators than on the GBA. I think it’s because it’s a bit slower on computers, idk.
This weekend will be the BEST WEEKEND EVER. The day the patch is out will forever be Mother 3 day in my heart. That’s it, I’m calling the president (whoever the hell it will be) and forcing them to make it an actual holiday! Everyone will get a day off school and work and will be forced to play Mother 3.

The Mother 3 ROM image is larger than the maximum filesize supported by IPS. That’s why they’re going with Byuu’s UPS format, which theoretically supports files of any size.

I can confirm that Mother 3 works on the G6 flash, with the menu patch and without. So with the new patch it should be fine.
Hey, been keeping tabs on this fairly regularly for the past year and a half (and daily for the past month) and now felt like an appropriate time to express my gratitude.
I played Earthbound for the first time eleven years ago and first heard about the sequel shortly after; I probably still have my old Nintendo Power with the original Earthbound 64 screenshots lying around somewhere. The time I’ve spent anticipating this game has taken me from middle school to adulthood; as I’ve aged, I find that I rarely have time to play video games anymore.
Needless to say, I will make time for this. My sincere thanks to you and your team for all of the hard work and perseverance; what you have accomplished is nothing short of phenomenal. Congratulations.

For some reason, I had the crazy idea that you guys were using a completely new patch format just for this game. I did a bit of looking around on UPS just now, but it doesn’t seem to be actually _described_ anywhere, and byuu’s Tsukuyomi app is coded in too complex a way for my limited knowledge of C to allow me to decipher. The best I could find was a confusingly compact overview of the layout, so I think I’ll just wait until the patch is released and inspect the file myself. Thanks anyway.

MATO! HEY!! I’m a Mac user and I have another solution!!
There is a program, although it’s not free it has a demo, that’s called Crossover Games. It’s an OSX application that runs Windows games (and some programs) in OSX seamlessly! I’ve been using it for a while now and I’m very happy with it, but I just found out that it will run the Windows version of VBA PERFECTLY!
I’m actually running Mother 3 right now in the newest Windows release of VBA through Crossover Games and everything is running fine! I’m even able to save (at least with save states I haven’t tested battery saves yet). I just thought you should know.

The install is instant and simple to run, and IMO the Japanese ROM is running much better than on even the most recent VBA-m (at least for me). The movement is smoother, its running a good bit faster and the sound and music runs great. Google it to find it fast.

I played Mother 3 a little bit on the PSP, and I can confirm that it does play. Just an fyi for those who do in fact plan on playing it on the PSP, be sure to unzip the ROM, gpsp can’t play 32MB games zipped.

For the record, I have played Mother 3 on my fat PSP, and it works perfectly, battle combo system and all, so no worries there. PSP emulators handle GBA roms better than they do SNES roms, for the most part.
Mato, I know it’s the “cool” thing to do to thank you, but really…honestly…truely…it’s people like you who make the Earthbound/Mother community so awesome. I’ve been watching this project since the VERY VERY VERY beginning, and it’s been a long road. THANK YOU.
Be careful, there’s a 3-in-1 that only does 16MB games. Mother 3 is 32MB. Make double sure you can use it! I have ezflash V 3-in-1 attached to R4 and it will not load Mother 3.

You sure you guys are not rushing it? Heck no you’re not rushing it who am I to say such a thing in front of such awesomeness. <<Random outburst from excitement ends here.
Anyway your team did something noble that even Nintendo didn’t dare to do. You brought Mother 3 to other countries and now they can experience it the way it was meant to be. You guys earned your place in the Mother series history. It would be funny if Nintendo used your translation patch for the English version of the rumored DS Mother compilation.

You mentioned running the Windows port of VBA on CrossOver. CrossOver is derived from Wine http://www.winehq.org/ which is a a free compatibility layer for Linux. There is a MacOS X port of Wine called Darwine http://www.kronenberg.org/darwine/ that might be able to run that emulator of yours if you don’t like the Mac port of VBA, I can’t make any promises. Darwine seems to work well at running Windows software on OSX without actually having Windows, but it lags behind the main Linux port of Wine in development. Obviously, since Wine doesn’t emulate hardware it will run at roughly native speeds, but will require an X86 (Intel) CPU.

I may not have been following this from the beginning but I know that things have been sacrificed and matters left unattended to get this finished and I have to say, you all that worked on this deserve a good long rest. Especially Mato because I can recall when you were really sick a few months ago but you kept on working. Your hard work will never go forgotten as everytime someone plays this game in english, they will know how much hard work was put in to make it reality.

You can also add the DSTT(DS TopToy) to the Slot-1 cards that work with Mother 3 for sure. I’ve been playing it using that and the Easyflash IV.

Not possible. IPS can only address 16MB files, MOTHER 3 is 32MB. Luckily, the latest VBA-M supports on-the-fly UPS patching. I hope more emulators will in the future after this release, too.

Heh, one of my old posts is high up on Google if you search for “mother 3 save size”. Anyhow, here’s the relevant information for anyone searching for it:

So if you have saving problems, set the save type to “Flash 64 KB” (remember, Kbit / 8 == KByte when looking at the information above). In VBA (and VBA-M), the relevant option is found in the menu under Options | Emulator | Save Type.

Like someone said before me, I have waited for Earthbound 2 since I saw the sign in Fourside. Hah.. and then Super Smash Bros. and the tease of Earthbound 64 on the DD :P.. 12 years. Some people probably have been waiting longer.

Since purchasing Earthbound on release day long long ago (makes me feel old) and finally finishing, I have been waiting for the sequel. I’ve survived the Earthbound 64 fiasco, I’ve crawled through the release of Mother 3 with no chance of an official English release… Now, it is mere days till it’ll be playable. This is truly a great day in the history of video games, and maybe one of the most important fan efforts of all time. Mato and co., I salute you.

Not being one of the people who’ve been waiting on this game for a decade or more (I was five when Earthbound was released and only finished my first of two playthroughs at the beginning of last month), I feel a little silly, but I still have to say that I am really looking forward to this thing. It was this translation and the community waiting so eagerly for it that made me curious about Mother, and I cannot thank them or you enough for getting me hooked.

Good work for this long time.
I just finished Earthbound in one sitting. It took me about 4 hours using an emulator. I used a save state that started all my characters at level 99, and used the turbo speed button a lot. I just wanted to cruise through the whole story without having to worry about leveling or spend time battling monsters. Just a refresher.
I think the best part of the game is either the 7th Sanctuary (Lumine Hall) or Magicant. Actually, the game from the 7th Sanctuary on is so beautiful and heartwarming. I sometimes can’t believe a Super Nintendo game can contain such sincere and beautiful imagery.
I hope Mother 3 can capture that same feeling. I’m stoked to play it finally!

apart from the generic thanks for even translating this game, thanks to you giving me a link to VBA-M, I just pulled off my very first 16-hit combo. the sound and input synchronisation is A LOT better than with the regular VBA.
first it didn’t work, as it kept asking for d3dx9_39.dll, but after googling the file +”download” and putting the file into the emu’s folder, it worked like a charm. thank you.

I’ve lurked through this project for over a year, but wanted to post at least once before it’s released. It’s been exciting to watch it develop, and I’m a programmer so it’s been interesting to hear about the hacking (and interested in the Japanese language, so I’ve enjoyed hearing about the translation :D).
It sounds like everyone involved has gone above and beyond for this translation. Mato, you worked your butt off, and I’m always amazed that you still take the time to answer questions you’ve answered a hundred times before (sure, a little irritably, but just doing it shows tons of patience on your part). I can’t wait to see the result of all this. I took your advice and ordered a flash cart so I can play this on actual hardware… hope I receive it before “the end of this week”.
I tried using VBA-M, and even after getting the .dll file, I got another error. I can’t remember what it was, but it started with the word “Couldn’t”

feeb: If we wanted total accuracy and faithfulness to the original, we would learn Japanese. I think Kumatora sounds a bit better, myself (I don’t know Japanese (which is why I’m here) so I don’t care about total accuracy like that.). There are naturally going to be some things that are lost in translation, and other things added, so get over it. Anyway I’ve read a few forums about this game and they all spell it Kumatora.
My God. I have been watching this translation since the announcement was made oh so long ago, and to finally see it come to a finish…wow. I have been waiting for this since I played Earthbound when I was just a little kid. So…from a lifelong fan, thank you.

been following this translation since mother3. org, thanks fo r the unbelievable time and effort you guys have put in from your normal lives. i can honestly say i wouldn’t have been able to continue on such a hard and frusterating task. this means alot to me because earthbound is a very special game to me.

Wanna shake off all that lag? You gotta redistribute the CPU! What I do on Windows XP is just bring up the Task Manager (Ctrl-Alt-Del), go to the Processes tab, and get rid of Explorer. Sure, turning off Explorer takes away your Taskbar and certain Context menus (for those who don’t know, those are right-click menus), but you still have Alt-tab*, and in the end it’s totally safe** to shut off Explorer as long as you turn it back on by entering Explorer.exe into the Run window when you’re done.***

***but your computer will be absurdly slow and may turn into scrambled eggs after repeated use. Or at least start to smell like them.
But for those who still have some sanity (something I ditched before I was even born), a better idea might be just to raise the priority of the emulator (right-click on its process) to AboveNormal. This actually is quite safe to do, and very effective. I can’t guarantee safety if you change it to Realtime, though.

You just copy the ROM, generally to a SD card or microSD card, insert that into the flash cart, and play the game on your system. It is VERY simple. I use CycloDS and EZFlash 3in1 Carts (for DS and GBA respectively but you need both anyway) ..
And that’s all I do, insert microSD card into USB card reader, insert into USB slot on PC, copy ROM to card via card reader, remove microSD card when finished, insert microSD card into the cart in the DS and then I am good to go

Man this is going to be tough. My semester is currently kicking my but due to a very full schedule. I think I’ll have to download the patch immediately after it comes out, test it out on my hardware to make sure everything is working right, and then I’ll have to put it away until the Winter Break. I want to play it now, but if I do I’ll be putting off important work, so if I wait tell December I can hook up the old SNES, play through Earthbound once more to set the mood, and then I can finally play Mother3 without the constant worry about upcoming deadlines hindering my enjoyment. I’ve been looking forward to this for to long to have to rush through it during my few hours of free time. So thanks Mato, Jeffman, and all the others who’ve contributed to the project. I can’t wait to simply be counted as one of the thousands of people who’ve downloaded and enjoyed your patch.

The 3-in-1 has 2 sets of RAM. PSRAM and NOR. PSRAM is fast and allows you to boot ROMS in seconds, but only supports up to 16MB ROMs. NOR is slower but supports up to 32MB ROMs. You have to flash the ROM in NOR which takes a few minutes and you’re on your way.
I dunno how to do it on the R4, but the CycloDS Evolution supports it natively and puts it into NOR automatically when you try to run it and you can boot from the GBA slot in the DS Main Menu just like a real GBA cart.

MAC / OS X Users:
I didn’t find it very easily, but the vba-m folks have a .dmg for an installation of the OS X build. It’s in the “Other Builds” section of the downloads:

Unfortuantely it runs superslow on my old school iMac G4 (which I’m only using because my iBook hard disk failed). Hopefully it would run sweet on a modern mac. I might get to test vba-m on a 1.2ghz Powerbook later tonight, but that’s not very impressive hardware either. The other OS X emulator alternatives are Boycott Advance, which no longers loads the game for me, and the Visual Boy Advance OS X port, which crashes all the time.
I got Windows running on my Mac, just so I can get a decent emulator for this game.

There’s also a VBA-M based port of VBA for the Wii that runs Mother 3 flawlessly. Check Wiibrew for a download.
Where can I find VBA 1.7.2 for Mac? It’s not so easy to locate.

UPDATE FOR SUPERCARDSD USERS!!
I just found out and confirmed that in order to save a Mother 3 game on the SupercardSD, you need to SRAM patch the *erhem* rom with a program called GBATA. Saving works fine with the (J) rom, so I hope it will remain fixed after the translation.

I don’t know where 1.7.2 is, but during the menu patch era, apparently using that version avoided the saving problem, while 1.7.4 had the saving problem. If someone can find 1.7.2 I can put a link up to it somewhere.
If there’s a recent VBA-M build for Macs too, that’s cool. Let me know more about it, anyone who can mess with it.
tibbs: yes, there is a silver star and a gold star. There are also a few other little extra goodies but those are super secret and only the most intrepid of players will find them. But they are awesome.

As said before, Mother 3 works fine on PSP using gpSP. Even using your English Menu Patch 1.5, Mato. Ofcourse there’s no telling on the complete English Patch until it’s released, but hopefully there won’t be any trouble. I plan on using the PSP so I won’t have to bring two systems to work >D

Since I know nothing about this sort of thing, when playing a GBA game on a DS through a (slot-2) device such as the eLink, does one need a special emulator or to do anything special in order for it to work on the DS? That is, are there special emulators for use when playing on a DS/GBA, separate from the regular PC emulators?

Man I had to use Cheeseglobe to download the ROM and Emulator because I go to boarding school and every game, torrent, and proxy site is blocked. For some reason they haven’t blocked Cheeseglobe, probably because having to use that thing in the first place is punishment enough.
But it was entirely worth it. I am locking myself in my room with a week’s supply of beer and Doritos. THAT IS THE ONLY WAY

If you have the right hardware (that is, a blank slot-2 card to store the game and a slot-1 card to load and launch it OR a slot-2 card capable of launching the game on its own), there shouldn’t be any additional software required. Most GBA -> DS launchers work by switching the DS into its own native GBA mode, so the system thinks it is actually running a GameBoy game. The only difference will be the physical location of your ROM and save data.
I’m totally making a playthrough of Mother 3 when this comes out on my Youtube channel!….But it’ll probably be covered up by the many other (popular) playthroughs that will happen RIGHT after the release of the patch…oh well, I’ll do it for fun!

Well this has been a fun year watching the translation progress! I can’t believe it’s almost done and over with! ^o^ The entire translation team deserves MORE than just a cookie! I’ve been lurking for so long, I suppose I might as well make a post now.
Mato, you and your team has done such a great contribution to the gaming community. Without you, so many people would have never gotten the chance to play this wonderful game.
I missed Earthbound growing up (I was a SMRPG fan) but hearing so much about it a year ago, I had to get it. And I loved it. The mere visualization of bashing hippies with baseball bats in an RPG won me over, and the rest of the experience solidifies the memories of a great game. Even though a Mother 3 translation patch was “In the works,” these things almost never get completed.
Yet here we are. Everyone persevered, fought through issues most translations would never dream of dealing with, and came out with a product. You all are truly incredible, and I know so many thank you for your efforts.
The weekend can’t come soon enough!

First off let me just say how Awesome! the whole translation team is I followed you guys from the beginning and thank you for your hard work. Alright I apologize if I sound like a jerk but will there be like some sort of walkthrough on how to get the patch to work on a mac for the most computer illiterate people ever because I believe I am one of those people. I have no idea what to download or anything. I tried clicking those links and was immediately confused on what to do. All I know is that I need a Japanese ROM and after that I am confused. Ideally I would like to play the game on my DS Lite but that might be asking too much. I pretty much read that entire thread and have no idea what anyone is talking about. So can someone comfort me by letting me know that there will be a some sort of guide or what would be really awesome…a youtube video or something like that. I’m just scared that once the patch is released I still wont be able to play it. Thank You.

199X: You will need the ROM and an emulator first. If you got those two, then you’re already set. The patching program was made to be very simple, you basically locate the ROM, press “Apply” and it patches it in seconds. That’s it, that’s the patching process. We designed the patchers with computer illiterate people in mind. No scary options or anything.
Here is what the patcher will look like.
EDIT: Yes, there will also be simple, detailed instructions on the site as well as in the readme. We got you covered.

Hey just thought I’d drop you a message because I noticed you had some flash carts listed but not the one I’ve used. I currently run a Supercard Lite on my DS and the menu patched Mother 3 roms runs great. So you may want to include this on your list or if you’d like I can test it on the cart and let you know right away how it is with the final patch installed. I’ve been a mother fan for years even still have the original box with strategy guide! CAN’T WAIT TIL THE TRANSLATION DROPS!!!
I’ve been searching the internet for AGES for a flash cart. I found M3 SD Perfect. And I don’t understand how the DS ones work. Do they just work exactly the same as the GBA ones? Just in slot one of a DS?

“Make backup of ROM”? That doesn’t look very professional. Normal software isn’t supposed to give you useful options during installation! It’s supposed to be all “we recommend against selecting your own directory” and “name your mandatory start menu folder”. I thought you guys would know that.

This is really great. I have to tell you, that I am not part of the starmen.net community. I played Earthbound when I was a little kid, and it is still my favorite game. I heard that Mother 3 was being released, and hoped for a English translation. About a year later, I searched Mother 3 english translation on google and found mother3.org. I saw the merger, and went over to this website. I have not posted once, and have read every single update that this team has made.
This patch is better than an official translation. It comes from a true fan of Earthbound, and will stay more true to the series. I really wanted to say thanks to your team, and you Mato. I have read all your updates, and have to say that you are an interesting, talented person. I’m sorry if you can’t get any future jobs off of this, and I’m sorry that this comment is so long. I believe that this project is worth it, and want to thank you for all the effort you put into it.

Playing through Earthbound to commemorate the new patch… yeah, that or I haven’t played the game in a decade and need to brush up on my lore. Both answers are good. It’s bittersweet news to hear that the patch is coming out by the end of the week. I’m only just now at Ness’s 5th Sanctuary, and up to this point I’ve been playing at a leisurely pace. I’ve got to get in gear if I want to be through before the patch’s release!

With OpenOffice.org 3.0 being released last night, VLC getting a major update a few weeks ago, me finally getting OS X 10.5 to run on my old HP Pavilion (hurray OSX86) and a new Ubuntu is due in a couple weeks, if you add Mother 3 on top of that, I might literally have geekiness start overflowing from me an leaking out my ears.

Just a few things left that I have to say:
If any of you have trouble compiling tsukuyomi on Linux, don’t be afraid to give a holler on IRC at #earthbound or on Tech Talk back at Starmen, and I’ll help you.
Also, to add to what Reid said about Transmission, Transmission is also available for Linux users too. It’s pretty slick, and it gets the job done pretty nicely.
Now, if I can just figure out how to make rTorrent not just leech, I’ll be helping seed the torrent from my server once the patch is released… *mumblemumble*
what about VBA Collector’s Edition? I found it on the same site as the regular VBA. It’s pretty much an optimized version of VBA, and it works beautifully with Mother 3. I could even get 10+ combos in! I encourage people to check it out!

If you have Comcast service or another ISP that throttles torrent connections, then it’s probably not your torrent client that’s causing the problem. I can’t seed on many sites because I have Comcast.

Using the earlier version didn’t work. I had tried to use a save that someone provided on the forum to kickstart the emulator’s recognizing the battery save, but that failed, but it worked once I renamed one of my save files from the menu patch. So I’m not worried about it anymore, but I’m fearful of all the people who are going to have problems.
It does sound like that save fix IPS will fix most problems for Mac people though. Hopefully.
I need to know if the eLink 512 works. The menu patch version works perfectly fine on it, so I thought I was good to go, but you guys only mentioned the eLink 1Gb, so now I’m worried that I have the wrong eLink cart.

I have Time Warner, which does shape traffic, but it’s never been as aggressive as preventing me from seeding at all.
After checking with Transmission, it does appear however that they have done something drastic in the past months since I’ve downloaded an Ubuntu CD.

Woo! Finally the chance to play one of (or the) greatest RPGs of all time in English also. I got half way through the Japanese version, then stopped as I decided to wait for the English patch, but it was definitely amazing, and one of the best RPGs I’ve ever played, and I was only half way through!

Funny, because the first time I played, Carpainter killed ME in 2 hits. Forgot to Lifeup.

Hey guys! Did you know that the Mother 3 translation is coming out at the end of the week?!
Hey guys, I’m a long time user of VisualBoyAdvanced, but the old 1.8.0 version. It works pretty awesome and has plenty of great options, but I really like the one recommended here (1.8.0 SVN) the biggest flaws though are fullscreen software menu (along with no auto fullscreen) and no video stretch, so you get those ugly black lines above and below your game. Could someone email me at (DigitalSquirrel@gmail.com) if these options are available and for some reason I’m missing them, or if I’m just better off staying on the old version. Thanks!
Kris: I’ll let people know a few hours in advance here in the comments. I don’t have a specific day or time yet, I do have a day and time I’d like to go for, but I have a lot of real-life work to do in the next few days + the other stuff is still being readied so I won’t have an exact time until the time is near. Just tried out my PSP with Mother 3, it works fine!!! Can’t wait to play this game. I loved Earthbound, and I love you guys for bringing the entire English speaking (and paving the road for other languages) audience this game. You guys deserve a lot more than just all of this praise.
I’ve been watching this blog for a while, but never posted. Just wanted to give my own personal thank you for the work you’ve done on the project, definitely inspiring.
I’ll probably have my first play through on the VBA emulator, but I’m planning on getting a DS Lite, plus the R4 / EZFlash 3-in-1 to get it working on the actual hardware, took me several hours to figure all of that stuff out. It made my head spin.
Just slightly off topic, the Persona 2: Innocent Sim patch just dropped, give them support too for their hard work.

It’s been a long wait. Ever since I beat Earthbound, I’ve been waiting for the sequel. That was almost thirteen years ago, and now I’ll finally get to play it. Thank you so much for the work you’ve done.
I wish I could play Earthbound, but uncut, ya know? Nintendo edited it and I just want to see everything directly translated and not changed around for the US. That’s why I’m so happy about this one… nothing changes. Mato and team translates it exactly (except some changed jokes) and you get the full experience.

LentFilms: The guy in that blog is quoting Tim Rogers. DON’T TRUST TIM ROGERS ON ANYTHING. HE IS A BIG D-BAG. He is the absolute worst extreme of better-than-thou highfalutin’ nerds. People like Shigesato Itoi and Hideo Kojima are on a higher plain than Shakespeare to him. He will not be happy with anything.

LentFilms: the very act of translation means that you will almost always, ALWAYS lose something in the process. It’s inevitable. So it seems kind of jerkish to single out just this single project. I would definitely recommend that people play the game in Japanese if they’re fluent enough to understand the original. But in the translation process I tried my best to remain faithful to the content, flow, style, effect, formatting and more. I’m not Itoi though and I’m not writing in Japanese. But I didn’t change any content except for puns and things like that.
People rave about EarthBound’s quirky text, but they don’t mind that it’s actually a kind of wonky translation in places. I’ve often wondered why this is the case. I think it’s because it’s the content that shines the brightest. The flow and style are just extra icing for those who are fluent in Japanese.

@Ninja Jonty: Slot-1 cards can’t directly play GBA games (DS isn’t powerful enough for a GBA emulator, and Slot-1 cards are…well, slot-1 cards. The GBA side of the hardware cannot access them).
Now, that said, there are programs you could use to load GBA apps onto certain expansion cards that are available that you could use with a slot-1 card. This is getting a bit off topic though, you are best off going to that Starmen.net thread or to GBAtemp where someone can answer with more detail.
Just wanted to say how impressed I am that you’ve made it. It’s amazing what people can do when they work together.
If you don’t know Japanese and haven’t played the original, you won’t know what you’re missing on anyways, so just enjoy it as it is.

Persona 2 - INNOCENT SIN. and MOTHER3, same week - is this some kind of Heaven? I have M3 Deluxe Box and I managed to play the game thru in Japanese, but now… wow, Shigesato Itoi’s masterpiece… in English. This is too good to be true. I already spent about 400$ for this game (thingamajingas that I can play this on hardware + DX Box). And I’m not regretting a least bit. This game is so awesome.

A well made multisystem emulator.

has significant problems with sound.
VBA-M - http://vba-m.ngemu.com/
updated and improved vba.
Most people should stick with Mednafen. vba-m seems relatively new, so you aren’t likely to find packages of it in their package manager, and the devs only have .deb files on their website.

Wow, I can’t believe I’m actually going to be playing Mother 3 in english within a week. I’ve never seen a translation project pick up so much steam and just seem to materialize out of nowhere. I owe Tomato, demi, jeffman, and all others involved on this project my sincerest gratitude and award them a lifetime supply of gold star stickers and chocolate chip cookies.

@Kiro: No. You can’t, because a trimmed rom will have the addresses messed up, and will render your rom useless. Patch it before trimming, If you must.
Oh yeah, and as far as Tim Rodgers rambling diatribes are concerned, personally I’m much more comfortable with the script in Mato’s hands than the entire translation/localization staff at NoA. All of his translations have been high quality, and knowing his love of Mother I trust this was probably one of his most intimate and engaging translations.
Thanks a lot for making this translation. I’ve been checking back for a long time to see it’s progress. I loved Earthbound so I am looking forward to this.

Wow, I can’t believe it’s been 10 years since I saw that copy of Earthbound on the rental store, picked it up and was so amazed yet confounded by its design.
A few years later, I hear about a japan-only sequel. I said “Damn, that’s never gonna get a translation here”. And suddenly, I see your website! But I expected this to take years, maybe a patch would be out when the next-gen of consoles are released I thought… But it’s so close!

Freaking sweet work guys! I’ve been keeping tabs on this project for as long as I can remember. I just tested Mother 3 out on my EZFlash 3-in-1 (using an R4DS) and had no problems getting the Japanese game up and running. I can’t wait for that patch!

In addition to the emulators lufthanza listed for Linux, no$gba also works for me at faster-than-Windows speeds under Wine. I recommend it for any Linux user who isn’t familiar enough with game emulation to fiddle with command line options.
No donations or anything. Money causes craziness and I’d rather not risk having Nintendo legal people jump at me. Instead, you can do some of the things listed at the bottom of this page:

Hm. Y’know, unprofessional or not, you guys really do deserve some sort of credit in the game. Like you should make some miscellaneous item in the game that usually doesn’t have text or completely useless text (like in some screenies, there’s one saying something about an engravement on a tree, but ‘it seems to be insignificant’ or whatever. A Good idea would to put your credits on something like at least a tree..
Your team really does deserve to be in the credit roll. But if a walktrhough or whatever it was satisfies your praise.. Then I guess that’s fine.
As I’m trying to get the Japanese version working properly on the computer to play the translation, does anyone have any suggestions on how to get the music combos working? I can do it fine on the real cartridge, but none of the emulators seem to be doing the job. I’ve tried VBA, VBA-M, No$gba, and Mednafen… not a single one of them has the proper timing…
Mato I have a somewhat important/unimportant question.
Is the end of the week considered to be Saturday with Sunday being the first day of the new week, Sunday with Monday being the first day of the new week, or my personal week with Wednesday being the last day of the week and Thursday being the first day of the new week?

Nah, I mean overrated, I didn’t mean the game in particular, just the series. You see, Earthbound is a great game however… Well, I love the SNES, it’s the system I play the most, but everyone got too… Bleckh… I guess I can’t explain how I feel now that Earthbound is one of the top 10 games on it… It makes me feel like people have only played 5 Super Nintendo games, and I’m going to say it flat out. It doesn’t deserve top 10… : \ It’s basically like taking a piece of me and shattering, which I find impossible at this point. I pray it doesn’t go to the virtual console because I honestly thing the only reason it got there is Super Smash Bros. and that game may have made a lot of posers because it really isn’t that great. Example: Fire Emblem… I’ve never said ONE bad thing about a real SNES game (games like Mario Is Missing don’t count) until I played Fire Emblem, now suddenly it’s all the rage… What is that? Anyhow, I guess nobody’ll understand what I feel… SO anyhow, Good job fellahs, you worked real hard to get here and you honestly deserve the praise.

Especially since it stood the test of time so nicely compared to most of these [now outshadowed] classics.

Was I rude the first time? I wasn’t now was I… Now I’m just getting a bit angry, besides, I’ve done it on other non-Mother websites and it was called trolling because it was Earthbound I was talking about… There was no Earthbound topic on the site. There’s nowhere you can say anything bad about the game because the game is apparently God of Super Nintendo and I’m now more than a shattered soul because one of the few passions left in my life is being desecrated. That’s all, I didn’t say “EARTHBOUND SUCKS! It should also on a side note or something be mentioned that M3 Sakura 1.12+1 will run Mother 3. I tested the menu patch on it and it saved just fine. It does need to be run in Patch mode the first time you start it up.

If this project were truly illegal, at least, illegal in a sense that mattered to anyone of higher authority, then something would have been done long, long ago when the first translation for an import ROM started. Honestly, to say you are of such authority is ignorance of the highest power. Not only that, but is there really much you can do when they take no action at all for the original hardware, and are merely doing this as a fan, taking credit only for the translation and not demeaning or dethroning in anyway the creators of said game. Identity theft is a felony, I believe. Federal prison sound good? =)

I don’t think anybody is here to hear life stories or about how your favorite thing was exploited by another game and exposed to a new generation. But I don’t think 12 year olds or whatever would know much about earthbound, since it came out before they were born. I was around to smell the scratch-n-sniff things in nintendo power, I was lucky. But I don’t feel violated that some kids are playing earthbound after they saw ness in smash bros, or downloaded it on wii. Seems greedy… i mean, it’s not your game, it’s everybody’s game! Everybody should play earthbound.
It’s alot like how Mato is allowing us to be introduced to Mother 3… I doubt the Japanese are angry that we’re getting the opportunity to play a game that we wouldn’t have known about otherwise. It’s a great thing! It’s video game evolution!

Just because someone is 12 or whatever, it does not mean they have no knowledge (or little or less, compared to you) of Earthbound. I’m not going to lie. I would prefer Earthbound over Mother 3 without hesitation. Mother 3 is just too depressing and doesn’t have that same feel as M2 which is the reason I loved playing it. Also, can anyone explain Giegue/Giygas’ story to me? I didn’t play M1 so spare me. I understand that you have to sing Giegue to death with Pollyanna’s song but why did Giegue come to earth or whatever. I’d like some real catching up so after I play mother 3 everything will hopefully make sense.

I love this blog. I have been checking it daily for the past 9 months. I remember when a post every three to five days was exciting and actually seeing the first English screens. On those days I would have an unerasable smile on my face until I went to bed, and then I would dream of playing Mother 3 or EarthBound or something. I remember when I showed my friend Kyle this blog and he had undescribable feelings as I did when I first laid eyes on this glorious website. It makes me excitedly sad when I think that of this blog. Even though I will have Mother 3 in my hand, I will remember this blog and be reminded of the best times of my 14th year on this Earth. Even at the young age of seven I muscled through EarthBound and loved every minute of it. I cried at the end and wanted to know more about it. I found Starmen.net and scoured it for information on other games in the EarthBound/Mother series. Here I am today, Never NOT thinking about Mother 3 and see what this game did to my personality and life. EarthBound changed me in ways I cannot describe and I hope Mother 3 will change me too. Thank you Mato, I will make you a thank you video on youtube. I am going to miss this blog. I will miss you Mato. I hope your future projects are as successful as this one. One day I will come back to this site and remember all the good times I had on here. All the happy days I had because of this blog outnumber the sad ones in my life because of this. What a great day this was listened to the soundtrack on the way to work, had some guy talk to me for a hour about the this site and the patch and everything earthbound played EB on my lunch break. To top it all off I talked to my Nintendo rep for my store and shes excited about the patch now also.

Oh yeah, on a side note, as if this wasn’t enough, Persona 2 Innocent Sin’s english fan translation also finished this week, came out earlier today (or yesterday.) How’s that for incredible, two major, major projects done in one week?

He knows what he is doing, and change is a neccesity when moving something from one area to another in many cases.
There’s even a term for it, transliteration perhaps?
Also if you honestly want a literal translation, try Sky Render’s FF6 re-translation. It’s an excellent example of why you should never, ever do a literal translation. Every character is exactly the same, boring person. Truly a lesson in what not do with a translation.

Yes mato does translate professionally, and if you see his resume, and consider how much he is into mother/earthbound (he has a site dedicated to the differences between mother 2 and earthbound) he is actually more qualified to do this than someone at nintendo. I believe this translation would be better than an official nintendo one if it came out.

This really is a day for the history books. I’ve been keeping an eye on this for a year or two now, and I wanted to say congrats.
I do have a question, though. Will the patch work on a rom with the menu patch on the Downloads page applied to it, or will I have to get a rom without the menu patch?
You will need the unaltered, original Japanese ROM. The patcher will tell you if it’s the right ROM or not too, but it’s best to know in advance I guess

Wow I really don’t understand how anyone could argue or bitch about anything going on here. Some guys just went through all the effort of translating a video game by themselves free of charge so English-speaking fans could enjoy it, and people are actually questioning the quality of the work. For the love of god, if this translation doesn’t work unless I’m naked in a dark dungeon full of penis-eating scorpions I’m really not gonna bitch, because no one had to take the time to translate this. The translators obviously understand Japanese, they’re not getting anything out of this except the satisfaction of having done something for a bunch of people they don’t even know on the internet. I am surprised this translation is finally coming to a close. I loved earthbound and after beating it I tried earthbound zero and found out it is really too outdated(I didn’t first buy earthbound until 2001 but that just stood the test of time much better I felt). It’s kinda sad that fans have to take up a project themselves cause Nintendo wouldn’t. Thanks to all the people in helping on the translation.

I know you guys will probably not even read this, but I seriously would like to give you the biggest bear hug ever. Nintendo used to be awesome but not releasing Mother 3 stateside is like a big **** YOU from Nintendo. Glad to see there are some people out there who pick up the slack, and once again thank you. NEWS TO PEOPLE THAT USE THE WII VBA.
There is a new version that was posted about 45 minutes ago.
It runs much smoother now. There’s about no slowdown out of battle now at all. In battles there sometimes is a very slight slowdown, depending on what’s on screen, but no more erratic frame skips. The battles stay at a consistent speed with the music, so combos are actually possible.
You should definitely download this if you are going to play it on the wii.

I renamed my clean Mother 3 ROM from 2377 - Mother 3(J).gba to 2809 - Mother 3(U).gba
I know it’s not really release 2809, but it would be if it was official.
I’ve seen the future, and i will be extremely happy in about 96 hours or so when i am well into mother 3 if not have already completely the greatest gaming experience of mine or anyone else’s life. Thanks to everyone involved, you should hack your names into the credits if you’re not to afraid of legal recourse.

Just tested out the new version of VBA-GX for Wii and I was AMAZED!
There is NO A/V lag for me in Mother3.
I managed to get a full 16 combo against the first enemy I fought and the button presses were PERFECTLY timed with the music, unlike with every other emulator I’ve tried, where I have to hit the button a bit before the beat. I’ll need to do more testing, and also try this with the translation, when it comes out, but I might actually use this as well as my ez-flash.

well, I’ve managed to spoil the plot for myself by this point, but reading what happens doesn’t come CLOSE to playing through the thing itself. I tried to pick it up back when this patch was in its infancy, and it’s still an incredibly solid and fun game even when you don’t know what you’re doing or why — actually understanding [X] should pretty much put this game over the top in my books. Nice job, everyone.

Hey, Mato, when you say there will be hidden stuff that only dedicated fans will find, do you mean stuff like using the pencil eraser on mani mani or just really cool dialog and small stuff just by talking to everyone and checking everything(if that makes sense)?

In honour of the translation being done and the patch nearing release, I am going to be playing through EarthBound AGAIN and broadcasting it on my Game-a-Thon Ustream page. This time, I am going to be playing it straight with no cutting off the feed for a day or so to sleep. Just non-stop playing for as long as humanly possible, or untill I beat the game, whichever comes first. I will be starting this insane sleep-deprived plathrough and live broadcast of EarthBound within the next fiew minutes. Just to tell you, it is completely possible to play Earthbound to completion in one sitting, and that included getting a sword of kings. I did it years ago during a boring summer just for the heck of it, although I may have had the advantage of starting first thing in the morning one day whereas it sounds like your starting at night. Oh to be young and job free… I almost wish I could return to that state at the arrival at the patch. Damn you school, work, and extracurricular obligations, I want to play MOTHER3 NOW! But I’ll just have to wait until I have free time again. Again, Mother3 translation team, you rock!
mini-update: demi got back to me with the few key lines I was hoping he could edit for me… and man are they great. I started to insert them into the script, but I won’t have time to insert them all until today/tomorrow evening (so much real life work aaaaaa). Meanwhile, everything else is winding down, so things are looking very good. I don’t have an exact day/time for the patch, but it’ll be in the next day or two or so.
Oh man I can’t wait to catch up on sleep once the patch is out. I also really want to play EarthBound, but I have no time. I envy you people playing it right now…

Admittedly, it’s been a few years since I’ve played it, but I’m replaying it right now. I’m about 8 hours into it, and I’m only back in Fourside after getting PSI teleport.
Also, you’d have to get real lucky to include the Sword of Kings in that. I’ve never gotten the sword of kings in any of my playthroughs of the game, and that included one time where I battled Starmen for an hour.
He’ll play until he finishes or gets too tired. He’s not even sure if he’ll get the house before he leaves Onett.

Why mash the F5 key all day when you can get a Firefox extension to do it 4 you. Its called ReloadEvery 3.0.0 and it Reloads web pages every so many seconds or minutes. Because of your niceness in translating all of the game, including the rest of the people who helped (Jeff, etc), I made a full play-through on Mother 1(Earthbound Zero) in one day. It took 14 hours, most of the material was edited out (grinding) but I’m narrating in it. Total playtime: 400+ minutes.

I also have a warning. I’ve heard that 4chan’s /b/ is planning to DDoS the site when the patch is released, for no reason other than to simply prevent people from getting the patch right away. I don’t know if there’s any legitimacy to it, but I thought I should pass it along anyway.

Yeah.. but it’s also kind of releiving. Everybody is appreciative of what you have done, even if they don’t know exactly what. Earthbound is one of the few games in which I have almost always wanted to respond to the NPCs theoughout the game.
I hope that Mother 3 is the same way. If there is any chance, though, then Mato and the team were sure to translate it the best way possible and get the messages across.
From what we have seen, it looks to be just as awesome as what we already know and love of the series.
It hasn’t been until recently that emotions have been stirred in me while playing EarthBound, especially around the end. Mother 3 seems capable of that tenfold. That will probably make my girlfiend very happy, since I am more of a “soul transferred into a robot” type of guy.

Mato and translation team let me start this omment off by saying thank you so freakin much………I have been waiting to play this ever since I found out you guys were going to patch it. When I was a young but I stole Earthbound from my friends dad and I fell in love with it. The sequal should be that much better.
On to bigger and better things. Just wanted to let everyone know that has a G6 Lite (Slot 2). Mother 3 works perfectly on, You should not experience any game lag due to the fact that the G6 has a built in GBA emulator in it. So just flash the game to your cart and vwala, start becoming an introvert for abou 20-30 hours :).

Well, it’d be nice. If you’re excited about playing a Mother 3, which everyone’s excited about because they’ve played Earthbound, shouldn’t that tell you that Earthbound must be a very good game? Furthermore, their opinions of Mother 3 have yet to be formed, so that’s the untested game. But either way, if you have two very good games to play in front of you (or two books to read, or movies to watch), and one is the sequel to the other, wouldn’t you prefer to play the first one so that you more fully understand the context of the other?

I also want to say thanks for giving us the heads up on the Persona 2 translation.
I loved Persona 3 and alot of other Shin Megami Tensei games, but I really wanted to play some of the older ones like Persona 2 Innocent Sin (I know that Eternal Punishment came out here but it was the sequel to Innocent Sin).
Being able to go back and play that game has been awesome and will make this week go by quicker until the Mother 3 patch comes out.

Ugh, I’m sick of translation patches, they’ve been taking over my life.
I need to make Clannad work in English [What.A.PAIN] and Tsukihime finally decided to work, only now I need to get the OST and put it manually in its folders.
Then there’s that annoying Sin and Punishment translation, and I’ve also had to trifle with other [rather easy] ones like Fire Emblem.
All of those in the past, what, month? Ugh.
At least Mato’s will be easy to use.
At least Sin & Punishment does have an official english version now.
