Testing is Magic Cake
Testing continues, slowly but surely. Nothing really new to report, which is good. It’s making me want to go back and fix some tiny, tiny issues that don’t matter anyway, but I must fight the urges. I don’t have the free time for it anyway though.
At this point, it pretty much looks like the translation will work on most everything out there than can emulate/play GBA games. If you want to be really sure ahead of time, try playing the Japanese version a tiny bit and see if you have any problems. If you can save your game properly (which is a common problem for Mac GBA emulators…), then you’re probably good to go.
When the patch is released, we’ll have a detailed list of hardware and emulators you can play the translation on. Some fine folks at gbatemp have offered their help in that regard, so the list should be pretty thorough. Until then, if you’re interested in running the translation on actual hardware or on other systems, this thread may be worth a read.
I figure we’ll let the testers do their stuff a little while longer, and during the meantime I’ll do my own testing and help get a handful of key lines polished up. Since more and more people are finishing the game (and playing through again) without any new bugs, the patch could be out a bit sooner than I had thought.

Sweet! I haven’t found a full Mother 3 ROM yet (the one in Emuparadise is only about 14-some MB, which isn’t the entire ROM), but I hope to find one soon and check this out when it comes out!

I would really like to play M3 using a flashcart, but whenever I try to learn how to use one all I get out of it is “bloo bloo bloo blah blah bobbity boppity boo.”
I am under the impression that people who use flashcarts follow the following steps:

3.) OH HEY LOOK. Mother3 just appeared out of nowhere. That’s just swell.

Y’know, just to put things in perspective for those of us joining the EB craziness now. I only got into EB fairly late, at the end of my junior year of high school. That was sometime in the spring of 2005. Around that time the rumors about this game were starting to bubble up, but nobody really knew if Itoi was really making it or not since so little had been leaked. After some tiny tidbits in the form of present boxes and the like (which the starmen team were so kind to translate), Mother 3 was actually released almost exactly a year after I first played EB. I have been checking nearly every day on the status of the translation of Mother 3 since then, that’s about 2 and a a half years. That’s from when I was finishing senior year of high school until my first semester of my junior year in college. In that time there have been 3 translation attempts, all eventually boiling down to this one…
And now it sound like it’s almost done.
I think I might flunk out of school thanks to you guys.

It’s so refreshing to hear good news about Mother releases for the first time in 15 years. Rock solid.

I know everyone here will hate me for saying this but have you thought about holding off on the patch till we know more about this DSiWare or whatever they end up calling it. I would really hate for the game to finally officially come out and bomb. Once you release something on the internet, it’s impossible to take it down.

Oh, and Moogpaul: Are you saying that we should wait for the DSi to be released in America in hopes of an official translation? Because people won’t want to wait until mid-2009 at the earliest (assuming that Nintendo will release it - which they probably won’t) when they could download a perfectly good translation patch in a couple of weeks-a month.
Or are you saying that the patch will hurt sales? If so, I bet plenty of people will still buy the official version. And if it does hurt sales: well, that’s Nintendo’s fault for not releasing it earlier.

When I use Visual Boy Advance on my Macbook, there is a slight bit of lag when I save, but it works nonetheless.
Question: Will the mac saving problem be fixed or will the mac users need to get creative?

The mac emu issues are mac emu issues.
Mac users should use Mednafen. Only problem is you have to start it using Terminal, and it doesn’t have a GUI configuration thing… but it’s certainly the best Mac GBA emulator out there.

@ruok: I already asked for one and Mato said it would be almost impossible, since it has sloppy programming, and Earthbound was flexible enough for that stuff. EB2 isn’t. But I think there will be a text editor.
@Err1112: He’s not hacking EB0 to have earthbound graphics, that’s impossible on an 8-bit system. He’s hacking Earthbound so it will have EB0’s story, characters, settings, etc. And he said he stopped work on it and probably won’t get back any time soon.

As far as Mac emus go…I’m currently working on a report of VBA to OSX, among other emus. (Not a fan of Richard Bannister and his charging for emus). I currently have NES, GBA and GB/GBC emulation working under an umbrella application. Think MESS, but with proven cores, instead of writing my own…
This is the first time I have announce this anywhere, but I will try to have it all ready and working by the time this is release, at least a Beta release. I’ll make sure saving is working for this game, but I’m almost positive it is.
Some may know me already…I was working on a re-port of Nestopia to OSX known as OpenNestopia. This is a continuation of that work, which has been completely rewritten.

Interesting theory Chris. I got the one from EmuParadise and it’s 32 MB. Check your computers internet connection. Maybe it died before the download was done. Sorry if I sould like an @$$, I’m just trying to help. The Rom at EmuParadise IS the full game, like all other GBA Roms I’ve gotten from there.

I’ve been watching this sucker from back when the project first merged. It’s wild to think that it’s almost done. Winding down as it is, I figured now is as good a time as any to post my appreciation for the amount of time and effort that has been put into this. I am becoming exceedingly eager, and will easily spend many hours playing the first day. To continued success, Mato, Jeffman, and the rest of the crew.

The thing that really got me exited was the last sentence.
Will those “tiny, tiny” issues be fixed at some point in a patch when you have the time or something? If they aren’t really noticeable it’s all fine, but it’d be nice to have a totally, totally complete project by the time you completely stop on the project. No hurries though, I’m already happy enough you guys have gotten this far.
By the way, have you considered maybe making a deal with Nintendo and giving them a finished version for them to sell right away or something, in exchange for some monies or even nothing if you feel like being generous? If I was Nintendo, I wouldn’t see why not.

There’s also the fact that the ROM is 32MB in size. A patch, which is much smaller, takes less time to download.

GBA emulators on Mac suck simply because GBA emulators on Mac suck. The demand for it isn’t that high. I remember trying to run Fire Emblem 6 on a G3 back in 2004 using the crappy Mac port of Visual Boy Advance… NOT FUN. I’m so, SO glad I have a new computer that isn’t a Mac.
Mato is such a winrar, he’s some fancy pro edition you have to pay for. That’s right, he’s got that many awesome features.

I would actually prefer not being told the translation is coming. For two reasons really: 1. Can you imagine if you just look on here one day and there is the translation…wow what a rush! 2. What if Nintendips are watching this and they are waiting for you guys to announce the translation is done before they make an announcement of their own? Anyway…my two cents!!! Just surprise us man!

Ooh, found a tiny bug of my own, in one of the battle text lines I had typed [31 FF] (which is the pause code) instead of [11 FF] (the subject name code). Easy enough to fix. Also fixed the translation for that line since I had never seen that line before.

@Trimalchio: I’m pretty sure he’s been doing tool-assisted testing just about the whole time. After all, he keeps tons of savestates on the emulator so that he can go to particular parts of the game to test things without having to replay everything every time

Hey Mato I know this probably wont help much but I did try and play the menu patch version a while back and since i usually don’t like to use guides and just play the game like any other human being by talkin to people to figure out where to go i gave up since i can’t read or speak japanese. But i did run into a small issue with gpsp when loadin a save state during the part where its raining kinda close to the beginning when the forest was on fire only thing you can see is the rain and no map until you move to a different part like going thru a door or entering a different part of the map that must be loaded altho minor i thought i should mention that.

For those that payed attention to what I said before about the forthcoming GBA emulator for OSX that I’m working on. I just checked SRAM stuff with the JP version of the rom, and it worked like a charm
So for anyone who has problems, this one should work like a charm.
Now…this is the first time i ever opened this ROM, and let me just say, I’m more excited now than ever.

I haven’t been following all the comments as religiously as I once did, so maybe I missed this, but:
What happened with the 3rd revision of the script? Is it done already/everything go smoothly? I don’t remember hearing anything about it!
I believed Mato scrapped it because Demi is currently running his own company and didn’t have too much time for this, and the second script was already great looking, so Mato went with it.

Obvious solution is to set a countdown for April 1st and then at T minus 5 to replace the front page with “This Account Has Been Suspended”.

I know it’s probably far too late for this (and I don’t want to sound like I’m telling you how to do your job,) but in the translation of Okami, for the long strange Japanese names, instead of changing them completely they just made them shorter: Okikurmi became Oki, Ushiwaka became Waka, and Izanami became Nami. If you’re not happy with some of the unpronounceable-in-English names or can’t think of a good English cognate, you could try that.
Or, in the likelihood that you already knew all this, this is directed at everyone else: Wasn’t that interesting?

Mato, your refusal of money for all of this work speak volumes about the direction of the development community. Real inspiration to do something like this is not motivated by money. Game developers should follow suit. Something so easy to copy should not be so expensive. Is it piracy to paint an exact copy of the Mona Lisa? Isn’t it piracy to take a photo of a painting?

Has anybody tested the translation on the GBA emulator for Wii yet? That’s how I’m hoping to get to play it - even if it’s not on its intended system, at least it’ll still be on an official Nintendo console.

Interesting theory Chris. I got the one from EmuParadise and it’s 32 MB. Check your computers internet connection. Maybe it died before the download was done. Actually, it was the full game, and it was 14 mb packed, but for some odd reason, Winrar saw an unexpected end to the archive and wouldn’t extract it. I got the M3 Rom from another site, and it worked fine.

VBA GX 1.0.2 for Wii still doesn’t run Mother 3 very well unfortunately. The frameskipping problem makes doing combos in battle almost impossible. If you can get through the game without combos then it’s mostly fine otherwise.
Oh well, I fail at combos so no big lose.

Games aren’t expensive because they’re difficult to reproduce; they cost a lot because it takes a lot of time, effort, and money to create them–the content itself, that is, and not just the physical media. If games cost significantly less than they do now, it’d be much more difficult or impossible to create them for a living, and we’d have fewer great games like MOTHER 3 to play. Surely this isn’t what you’d want?
And yes, as other have already said, copying the Mona Lisa would be piracy if it was under copyright as is MOTHER 3.

It’s cool that people want to give me free things (especially expensive things like PS3s, heh) but 1. I don’t feel comfortable accepting stuff, just feels… creepy and 2. even if it’s not money, there’s probably some legal thing somewhere that would put us in more trouble if we accepted stuff and then got taken to court.

I’m glad to see it so near completion. I’ve been waiting for this as long as anyone (I played EarthBound when I was ten, right when it came out). You have no idea how much this makes other stresses in my life just disappear.

Hey Mato I bet you go through a weird withdrawal stage when this project is over. Its like when people are in school and all they want is for summer to come. But when summer comes eventually people start to miss school. When that happens just think of sprite text morphing and it should stop

I forget who mentioned this, but I agree. It may be better not to give a heads up of when the patch is coming out, as it could put pressure on Nintendo to take action preventing its release. I think the patch has a better chance of seeing the light of day if there is no announcement of its release ahead of time. Just surprise us with it. There is less chance of it being stopped that way, and it would be an awesome surprise for many fans.
Basically, there are a few things you can do:
1. Buy official merchandise, support the series, who knows, maybe good can come from it
2. When the patch comes out, don’t rush through it super-fast, take time to savor it, since it HAS been almost 14 years in the making. Go out of your way and explore and have fun.

Mini update
I haven’t had much time in the last day to do much testing, but no new issues have come up, I’ve been trying to get as much rare battle text to show up as possible, too. Nothing new from the testing team either, they’re even testing it at different text speeds and trying all kinds of stuff.
demi’s super busy so I’m probably going to make some videos of key lines so he can help make them better. After that and my current playthrough (two chapters left), I’ll see where we stand, and if all is well (I predict it will be), patch time will be upon us. I got a good deal of work the next few days though, so who knows how long this will all take.

Mato, you really need to treat yourself to Disgaea 3 at some point. It’s a great game. The writing is top notch, the humour never fails to give a chuckle, and if you just want to go ape with grinding, the Disgaea way is always available. As Mato says, no concrete date set, so I say that even the release was a few days away, assume that it will be sometime in the next month or so. If you want to be optimistic, think a few weeks, but things can always come up. This way, you will most likely not be disappointed, and perhaps even surprised.

Sense Mother3 is a 32MB game, I’d assume the patch is going to be at least 16MB, if not more, considering all the fixes, and the fact they maxed it out.
Remember, GBA game has to stay exactly 32 MB, lol
Actually, Mato, for the sanity of the people here, it WOULD be kind of you to release the patch on a Friday evening…
Actually, I think patches are really small compared to the ROM. I’m guessing 1MB max… But then again, I know nothing about hacking.
The patch file, when zipped up, will be about 1 MB. But I don’t know how the applier program will work, so it may be bigger than that when you figure that in.
The ROM can’t be over 32 MB, which is the size it already is, so we’ve had to do reshuffling, compression-ish stuff, and blank-space hunting to make stuff fit.
Don’t have my babies, you have too many. Plus the species thing. Instead, I might take some of them off your hands if no-one buys. I need food too ya know *mauled by baby lovers* Wow… Lucky Flint was here

How many playthroughs will each tester do? You’ve already mentioned that some are already finished and have started over again. Will they play through again when this second playthrough is done?

I know many, many friends who are good with Super Smash Bros. Brawl, and if something does in fact go wrong, we will hurt you. A lot.
But that aside, I honestly cannot wait. From the sounds of things, the patch could be out fairly soon. Still very hard finding time, but I did find a typo just now, which is good. We may have also found a bug that switches your text speed from Slow to Medium without your knowing, but it’s too early to say if that’s the translation’s fault or the original game’s.

There aren’t “testing periods” and there isn’t a set # of playthroughs. We’re mostly playing it by ear and when things seem acceptably tested, we’ll stop the testing and release the patch.
Tool-assisted testing is basically part of the main testing anyway, it was kind of dumb of me to separate it like that. I’ve done some of the stuff manually already anyway.
I ordered an ez flash V+ a few days ago. Along with my 3-in-1, I hope it works well and doesn’t glitch and stuff.

Adam P: It didn’t work. I know, because I ran the Japanese M3 ROM on VBALink (I use it because it doesn’t have such massive slowdown as VBA does) and when I saved it, some file info popped up in the file I saved in.
